Didn't we have this discussion before?
Round and round we go.
Pretty much. I just wish the writers would announce the LIs already to save us from our misery.
But who am i kidding, they really enjoy it.![]()
In a romance, I'd like to step away from my Main Character being compared to an LI's past lover/spouse. "You remind me of my (dead) girlfriend/wife/ladyfriend I used to be interested in," is not an endearing compliment to me. We have had a handful of these types in the past. I'd rather an LI say, "I like/love you because you are strong/intelligent/bold/whatever." To romance and like and love someone based on their own person.

I'm not really worried about the npc LIs because it seems like they are going to be as important to the mission. Think of them as companions who assist you in a non-combat capacity, but will be in camp and probably present for most major interaction.
The main thing that annoys me about the "dead ex" plot arch is that it totally avoids actually getting to know them. I don't learn much about this person or their personality just by learning about their dead ex. It just seems like easy filler when you don't want to actually give the person a complex background or well developed thoughts and beliefs. "I had an amazing partner, and they died, and it was sad." It just seems like a cheap filler that you can slap on any character with some minor alterations to fill up lines and fit the content quota.
It's also why I'll never bother a second playthrough of ME3 to romance Cortez. A dead spouse isn't a substitute for personality, beliefs, or plot relevance.

Sometimes it's like 'Yeah, if they were alive I'd be dating them too.' You're supposed to be the LI, not the zombie matchmaker.
The number of love interests that have a dead somebody in their past makes me want to climb a wall. Is it possible to find one damned individual who isn't mourning for someone and is just an average person who isn't opposed to romantic interludes? I think it's one reason I did like Kaidan and Fenris so much. Fenris's baggage had nothing to do with past loves, and while Kaidan did mention the girl in his past it was more about how he came to realize what his powers mean and not how the silly girl made him feel bad. And his line about how you don't get to be his age without getting over things? Sold.
Now, if we were to count the characters whose dead whoever came up in a conversation, we'd be here all night. I hope we get none of that this time around.

I want to turn a gay person straight because I am a sexy beast.
That would really make my day.

Would you turn gay for a sexy beast?

Probably not. He'd have to be the sexiest person alive. Even then I would have my misgivings.

It can feel like it is an obstruction to knowing the LI, since it is focusing so much content on a third party who isn't even *present* within the game itself. It is another one of those romance plots that are special only for women (and gay men so far). This kind of comparing and projected love-by-proxy vibe is not done for straight dudes' romances, and they've collectively had more choices to boot and have not run into this plot frequency. The last dead lover a dude had to deal with, I believe, was Jaheira in Baldur's Gate II almost 15 years ago. And she did not compare you to Khalid in that way.

I like this human, he understands.
All reasons I can think of why it would be important to have set sexuality.
1. For someone to have turned another down. It apparently can't be just cause they don't like them it has to be because of genderrr. ![]()
2. To being compared to an ex, who they may or may not be over by the end of the game.
3. Having sexuality being pointed out to an annoying amount.
4. It's impossible for a character have a spouse while being attracted to more than their gender
Your whole comment confused me, but if I just stick with the one bullet - I have to bring up Zevran in this thread again - by choosing particular dialogue options, he can propose to you - implied marriage, and he is attracted to more than one gender.4. It's impossible for a character have a spouse while being attracted to more than their gender
If Cullen mentions Amell because you import an Amell Warden from the DAKeep, I'll appreciate the reference.
But, I understand why others dislike "Carth syndrome" and technically Cullen already pined for Amell in DA2, so if there is no reference, it doesn't really matter.
I feel like that's a touch more appropriate tho. It's not some random character that we're only hearing about after they're dead, it's a character we've had the chance to get to know very well.
If, say, they randomly had....(struggling to remember married npcs in da:o*)...wade...show up and be an LI, him talking a little bit about Herren would be fine because we got to know the character, it's not just something we hear about purely for angst.
* I say DA:O because the events of DA2 give someone enough time to be truly over the loss of a loved one and ready to move on for another committed relationship, not just a fling.
I'd feel kinda dirty romancing varric since he was such a bro to me in the last game. lol

I don't understand how that's 'Carth syndrome' as his crush was unrequited.
