Cameron Lee about Varric's romance:

"I'd better not answer that because if I do, David Gaider, the lead writer, will punch me in the face. So I can't answer that.
I know the answer, but I'm sorry guys. Let's put it this way: Varric loves his crossbow so much... So I don't know whether Varric would be able to let go of his love of Bianca."

Turns out Bianca was just an imaginary person he grew attached to.

Really?

I don't see why they wouldn't; Varric is handsome, charming, funny. Just because he happens to be short isn't a reason to call him a niche option.

I don't think they'll make Varric an LI at any rate, though; not because he's a dwarf, but because he is the friendzone character of Dragon Age.

Just my personal experience. Most straight women I've spoken to about their choice of partners said they want men who are bigger than they are.

I think Garrus is an interesting point. (Not necessarily convincing, but interesting.) He was popular and so the Mass Effect team made him romanceable. Varric is popular. Isn't that why he's back in Inquisition?

Then again, Joker was popular and they specifically didn't make him a romantic option.

Biggest crime of Mass Effect 3.

Okay not really but I was still bummed. Putting him with EDI in a hot robot body was not really ideal for me.

I think they brought him back because he plays off Cassandra's personality well and Marry still had things to do with his personal storyline. Not to make him a straight dwarf-only romance choice...

Good point. Cullen is popular and they made him a love interest. Maybe that's enough fan service.

Ha, a lesbian/gay "main" co-protag? Something that will probably never happen.

I actually really hope nobody fills this description. I wish they would try to make all the LIs, even all the non-LIs, close to equally involved in the plot. I hope they don't pick out one or two and make them way more plot intensive, LI or not. I was not a fan of how it worked with Alistair and Morrigan, at all. Sure, have those sorts of plots, but don't make LI characters like Fenris or Zevran to where you could cut them out and literally nothing would change.

He's gonna be the Aveline of DA:I in terms of romance. You can flirt with him, but he'll simply ignore it or keep turning you down each time you try.

I don't think Bianca is too big of an obstacle for a Varric LI.  She's easy enough to work around if the devs really wanted -- people move on.

Alistair was obviously plot central, but I don't think Morrigan was that central to the plot. People put a lot of weight on the DR, but the DR didn't matter (really) in DA:O except for the endgame. For 95% of the game, Morrigan was less important to the main plot than Wynne or Zevran.

I think it's been implied that they don't want to "work around" Bianca, they want to bring her back into the story. I don't think she's really dead.

Really hope Varric will not be LI. Romantic feelings will break perfect friendship!

Also, can't say lot of people love short funny dwarfs in a romantic ways. Knowing that Bioware usually pick most popular archetypes and we already have Cullen who really reminds me of Alistar ( Human with same hairstyle, same colour, even his nose similar ) and Anders, I think we should expect someone similar to Zevran - Fenris ( Long ears and emo hairstale / backstory ) But here I can't say who will be our Zevris because Solas lack of hair, Dorian seems too cheerfull, and that boy with blonde hair and two daggers... Was he confirmed as Cole? If not may be he is our second LI.

The situation with Flemeth always seemed like something that would keep coming up in the series, to me. I didn't see anything like that with Zevran, not even Wynne. Morrigan and Flemeth are the ones that save you from Ostagar. If you cut that plot, you're basically dead. Between that and the DR, without her plot lines, you're possibly dead twice.

I suppose it's just me, but I'm really hoping that whether he's an LI or not, Varric will not be the best friend character again.

He isn't my best friend; he's Hawke's best friend. He shouldn't be the Inquisitor's best friend, too.

*sigh*

I keep trying not to get my hopes up at all about Varric. I"m a female that definitely would love to be able to have my Inquisitor romance him. He's really the only companion I 100% really, really want (largely due to already "knowing" him from a whole previous game, granted). I see all the reasons why it won't happen, and yet also see all the reasons why it could, and I find myself painfully flip-flopping in the indecision.

Argh...

Really hope Varric will not be LI. Romantic feelings will break perfect friendship!

If you're worried about ruining his perfect friendship and he DOES turn out to be a LI, you could always... you know... choose to NOT romance him.

Don't ask them to deprive the rest of us!  :crying:

After DA2 though, why would we get something other than equal choices?

It's been more or less confirmed that everyone will have choice. It hasn't been confirmed that it will be equal. We could have 2/3/1 or 1/4/1 or 3/2/2 or any number of combinations.

I'm never going to be interested in a dwarf LI, so I'd rather Varric wasn't an LI. If he's the hetero option, though, it doesn't make much difference, to me, I guess.

I'm sort of hoping for Cullen as bi, Dorian as gay, and Solas as straight, because it seems like the best balance of what I want vs what seems to screw over straight women the least. It seems like Solas has the biggest female following next to Cullen and that's one companion LI for everyone. I don't really see many male fans for Solas and Dorian is easily the gay favorite, as far as I've seen. It seems like the closest I can see to an ideal situation without a last minute decision not to have set sexualities, which is probably impossible now.

The situation with female LIs seems less easy to divide, because the interest between Cassandra and Sera seems more evenly distributed and Scribe Girl doesn't have anywhere near the following Cullen has. There are also a lot more people expecting Vivienne than are expecting any of the niche male LIs to make it. That situation is going to go down horribly, no matter, it seems.

I'm still hoping however futilely that scribe girl isn't a LI and all 3 female companions are.

True, but the writers have repeatedly defended all bisexual LIs because it was the only way to be equal. They said it was far better to have them all be bi and there to be equal options and to have set sexualities means they would need set sexualities for everyone. So 2/3/1 and 1/4/1 would be neither since in the first 1 sexuality is missing, in the second it is missing as welI. I can see 3/2/2 happening, since at least one of each, but we shall see.

The only way to make that fair is if she (or another major female NPC) is a LI and another male companion also is. Otherwise, it's unfair to straight women/gay men.

I'm still of the mind that they are gonna do 1 NPC female LI, as I don't think they would solely do a male NPC.
