That is what he claims in his re-telling, he could have lied and in reality he let Hawke deal the the problem all alone.
Now that would equel the horyshetwewererevanallong twist.

I've never liked the interpretations of DA2 being entirely a story Varric was telling. Him telling the story was a good framing device, but I like to think that 95% of what we see is what happened.
Otherwise, the game just becomes even more irrelevant than it already is.
Friend or rival, he's the one person who won't leave Hawke, won't betray them, will stick by them no matter what.
I want Varric to be a close friend to the Inquisitor, but I don't want it to go that far.
He doesn't betray Hawke because he had no reasons to, regardless of the path. He's not concerned with Kirkwall's political problems and Hawke doesn't seem to meddle in his dwarven affairs. And he does leave Hawke, just after the events of DAII.
But please, not scribbles. She sounds waaaay too much like Kelly and Sam Traynor romance and while i liked them, i don't want a lesbian NPC (again)
I just want to point out that the only thing we know about her is that she has a book.
Maybe the book is just a list of people she's killed with her bare hands.
Well damn, that got dark quickly.

She seems to be one of the leaked survey characters. It is hard to find any detail now, but I recall her being a mage... and being called painter-or-something-connected-to-art

Nah, her picture was in the leak, but she lacked a description in that survey. I do agree that she's probably a mage though.
I don't think the survey ever said anything about Scribbles. Otherwise we wouldn't be calling her Scribbles. I'm pretty sure all we got was the concept art.
They've never said if Scribe Girl has a class, at all. Being a mage would even out the NPC classes, but I'm not sure they need it. Chances are pretty good that she'll never actually need combative abilities to fill the role of trade/political lead.

Need dem bloodmagic to sway all those political fools.

Maybe the ink she uses to write with is blood... ![]()

Maybe. It's been months if not a year since the survey
Still, it makes sense
Cullen - warrior. Lelianna - rogue. Scribbles - mage.
12 people, 3 classes. Everything is even
As far as I'm aware they haven't said anything about Scribbles, at all. They've said we'll have a political/economic advisor, but they haven't specifically pointed to her. That's something we came to on our own via process of elimination and common sense.

Oh god, she is the spirit of Dorothea Omber from Harry Potter.
I'm convinced. She is gonna be Judas.

The dev didn't call him a unreliable narrator just for fun. Although, I don't think he was lying about that part or anything else in the game, I think he forgot to talk about certain things that will end up important in DAI.
I never got the impression that he had a special friendship with Hawke. He seemed to have a similar friendship with the other companions going by the banter. He is a "bro" character and I don't expect that to change much in DAI. Although, it might be easier to ****** him off in DAI than in DA2...
See, I've always seen Hawke and Varric's relationship is being special; everyone else could be good friends with Hawke, but Varric was Hawke's sidekick.

Lots of people are just saying they don't want to romance her because of a characterization that they've completely assumed.
No, it's nothing to do with her character (which we know nothing about).
It's because she's not a companion.
The Inquisition will have more than 12 characters. The political adviser could very well be a more minor character.
And yet they went out of their way with a group shot with 12 characters saying "We are now the Inquisition"
I will be extremely shocked if Cullen, Leliana and Scribe Girl aren't the advisors, like people thought even when there was way less evidence of it than there is now. The advisors are probably not going to be more minor than other agents. They're the people you directly interact with to get all missions to grow certain areas of the Inquisition. It just goes against what we know about the game to assume this isn't how it will be. Sure, maybe there's a huge curve ball we don't know about, but it doesn't make much sense to operate as if there will be. It's a slim chance, at best.
I'm not saying they won't be; I'm sure they will. I'm just saying that Bioware hasn't said anything official on the matter.

I always considered Varric and Isabela to be pretty equally my Hawke's best friends. I played a sarcastic Hawke and we made a great team. The slave thing in the comics has really bummed me out about Isabela, though. It made me think of her totally differently than I did before, not at all in a good way. It sucks, because I always saw the three of us as super good friends, so otherwise it would have been awesome to see she and Varric kept traveling on together.

TBH I took more umbrage at her being okay with Castillion's terms for getting hold of a ship. It's been stated (I think it was even stated in the comics) that the next load of slaves she took, she set free. It fits her story, since a large part of Isabela's story is her regrets, and she clearly learned and understood that what she did was a horrible thing.
And then they set it all back with her act 3 companion quest.
