My Hawkes also ended up being very good friends with Varric but I never thought that he would be my Hawkes' best friend. I guess my Hawkes didn't have a best friend. For some reason I didn't like Isabela and I never became very good friends with her.

I always considered Varric and Isabela to be pretty equally my Hawke's best friends. I played a sarcastic Hawke and we made a great team. The slave thing in the comics has really bummed me out about Isabela, though. It made me think of her totally differently than I did before, not at all in a good way. It sucks, because I always saw the three of us as super good friends, so otherwise it would have been awesome to see she and Varric kept traveling on together.

I never trusted Isabela after what Flemeth said to her when I brought her to Sundermount (even if she is my Hawke romance most of the time and how well she play off Sarcastic!Hawke). See Flemeth gives a warning to Bethany, find Fenris interesting and think Anders is an idiot, but Isabela, she doesn't like her at all...

Still love Isabela, she's my hawke's li. Don't like that comic reveal, more because if true it should have been in the game rather than the notion it was completely unbelievable. Comics don't happen in my main universe as alistair is dead as a door nail and my head canon can't see her not being with hawke wherever they vanished or trying to find what happened.

TBH I took more umbrage at her being okay with Castillion's terms for getting hold of a ship. It's been stated (I think it was even stated in the comics) that the next load of slaves she took, she set free. It fits her story, since a large part of Isabela's story is her regrets, and she clearly learned and understood that what she did was a horrible thing.
And then they set it all back with her act 3 companion quest.
There's just a breaking point for me as to what I can accept and forgive in someone's past. Being a slaver is, in itself, a horrible thing. That she realized that before anyone got hurt and released her slave shipment, I could forgive without issue. That she didn't realize that until after she already murdered a shipment of slaves to save herself, I can't really ever forgive the character for. It's just past my breaking point.

Yeah, I get that. And I do also wish they had done anything else with her story.

Isabela: Friend of yours?
Flemeth: You speak the word as if it were cheap coin, meant for spending.
Isabela: You don't know me.
Flemeth: Oh, I know your type.

I see people repeating things like this a lot.
What does this even mean?
Is it impossible to have no gender restrictions yet have more 'complicated' relationships?
I gave an example immediately following the one sentence of mine that you quoted. You can disagree with my example all you want, but you can't just quote one sentence out of context, and then ask what it means, when all the rest of my sentences explained that.
If companions would actually turn you down and not be interested in you for some other reason, other than gender restrictions, then yes, it would be possible, without gender restrictions. In DA2, our only "all bi" example, the only reason you can't romance someone is if you didn't put forth any effort at all - or if you are trying to romance too many people at once and get too far down one's romance and it blocks other ones.
Which I actually did in my first playthrough - I wanted to romance Fenris, but was playing with Anders too. Happened too get to far in Anders' romance, and it prevented me from romancing Fenris any further. Made me very sad. But also added complexity to my relationship with Fenris - he was my "one who got away."
But that was kind of just a chance thing - had I happened to do Fenris' questline before Anders, I would have gotten to romance both of them to a point where the game would have actually presented me with a choice, to actually pick one of them.
Having real gates for romances - either based on gender, race, or unwavering beliefs (ie, won't romance you if you're anti or pro mage, cos they're the opposite) - can give you more complicated relationships with your companions - they're no longer "just there for you to romance."

I bet Flemeth knew what she did in the past. I never cared for Isabela.

Nah, her picture was in the leak, but she lacked a description in that survey. I do agree that she's probably a mage though.
I want her to be a true noncombatant and have no class. It will give her a unique viewpoint among the group.

Read The Comic "Those Who Speak" by David Gaider to find out what she did with the Elven slaves. I'm sure Flemeth had the ability to read her guilt.

I remember that.
Spoiler
And here I thought I couldn't despise her any more...she's a dirty pirate, though, so I shouldn't be at all surprised. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with her as a companion again.
Now I wish I could've given her a worse fate than simply letting the Qunari drag her off. That monster will be getting the business end of my sword (and not in the way she likes) first chance in Inquisition.

Doesn't she escape the Qunari again if she is taken? If so, you have your chance.

Hawke has no way of knowing that. I still like Isabela despite everything she did, I can't help it xD

Same. I do like Isabela, a lot. What I respected most about her was that she didn't care what people thought about her, and I love her dialogue in regards to that.
"They don't know me. I know me."
Also, she is cognizant of how she has made mistakes in her past, and that they have shaped her into who she is today.

I absolutely adored Isabela as a best friend. Hell, I thought my Hawke was great friends with everyone, except Sebastian.

I think my Hawke barely knew Sebastian but didn't really dislike him. He was kinda just....there. That describes his role in the game pretty well until the end.
I felt pretty bad when he asked me whether I'd still be "waffling" about killing Anders if Sebastian had been in that Chantry when it blew up. I was like "....uhhhhhhh.....maybe?"

I loved Isabela in DA2. She was easily one of my favorite characters. She and Morrigan probably are the companions with the most appealing personalities to me, so far. Still, it's just one of those situations where "feeling bad" isn't enough to make up for it, to me. For a lot of people that's how it was with Anders in DA2. For me, it's this with Isabela.
