I have to admit I was dissapointed to see Cole as I really didnt want characters from mixing media, but I trust Bioware not to link them too much. So far the books/movies were just background stuff that is never really important. I hope they keep to that.
One romance I have a hard time imagining, if he were even available, is the grey warden, so close to his call, I am curious if it could even work.

This. I was really... Disappointed in Awakening Oghren. All the character development he went through in Origins was disregarded. He became an unfunny parody of himself.
Exactly. I could only do one playthrough with him in Awakening. The fact he abandoned his child cinched it for me.
My Wardens...no matter what Origin lost so much when becoming a Warden. The fact Oghren was throwing his life away and abandoning his child was too much for them to accept. And the constantly being drunk was overkill.

Awakenings Oghren definitely felt like a shallow parody of himself. Everything for cheap drunkard jokes. It was insufferable for me. I do not like Oghren as a character, but at least in Origins I could have one or two chats with him that actually had some semblance of depth and went somewhere.

On my last big session of Origins and all the DLC, I counted the number of times Oghren fell down drunk. In the first game (which is about a 35-50 hr game depending upon experience) he falls down three times, and one of those he had a drink with my Warden. They both passed out, but that was a part of a high friendship conversation. Meanwhile, DA: Awakening, which is ~12-15 hours, he passes out three times (so around every 4-5 hours of game time.) In order to initiate conversation with him at the Keep, you clicked on the giant wine flask. The pony remarks weren't funny to me, it was just a sad fat drunk that couldn't face reality.
The worst part was importing a surviving Warden only to find Oghren's affection reset and his characterization was set back. I can understand why my Warden didn't just fix all of his problems by getting him hitched, but turning him into a parody of a dwarf wasn't the way to do it. Oghren, by the way, is the only character that David Gaider said he included for "fanservice." DG regrets that decision, and from the results of Oghren's awful character in Awakening, I can't blame him.
I'm glad that if we're going to have some more platonic friendships, it looks like they are going to handle it better than they did with Oghren. Varric so far has been pretty good on that front and from the looks of both the demo and the recent trailer, he'll remain the same character. If it isn't in the cards for me to have Varric as a LI, so be it. As long he remains at least mostly the same person I last saw in the comics. ![]()

Since I saw the leaked article talking about leading your army into battle against the red templars, Cullen has been looking a bit more appealing as an LI. I didn't really expect much involvement from the NPC romances, honestly, but this does make it seem more like Cullen might actually have more application than just hanging around the base all the time. I've always said I hoped the NPCs were bi for fairness issues, but now it's looking like I might actually do a playthrough with Cullen as my LI if he's available for m/m.
I still love Dorian, though. He'll still be my first playthrough, if possible. ![]()

Several hours after...
" Hell to the no, Why did I waste several hours of my time with that guy ?
"
I have yet to see a dragon age game where I find all the companions interesting and appealing to me to the point I bring each of them around me, during a playthrough. I still can talk to them at the camps after all.
I also hightly disliked Tallis, couldn't stand her, and couldn't stand the fact that I was forced to play the dlc with her in my party. ![]()

Oghren is an alcoholic. Not a "Ha ha! Dwarves love to drink!" unrealistic alcoholic, but an actual, honest-to-god alcoholic. I find him to be one of the saddest companions, and also one of the most underrated. Although to be fair, someone finally having to cut themselves off from someone so toxic is a perfectly valid reaction to an alcoholic, so don't take this as criticism of your warden or anything. But I think people tend to miss that Oghren is an actual alcoholic.

I've never hated a companion character. There were just characters I greatly preferred for various reasons. My preference went to (In no particular order) Leliana, Wynne, Alistair, Zevran, Shale, Anders, Sigrun, Isabela, Aveline, Varric, and Nathaniel. And then the rest of them.
As for Cassandra, I've been itching for her to be a companion since we first saw her in DA2. I like her forceful, put a knife to your throat personality. I actually like when companions have a bit of bite to go with their bark. I want her to be the way she is in DA2 because I like that she cares about what's going on...
I just don't want the romance to be dominated by whatever their raison d'etre seems to be. I would actually prefer if most of them didn't have a raison d'etre. Not that caring about something or having a passion is bad, I just don't want it to be the only subject of conversation. Especially in romantic conversations.

The only companion I full-on hated was that Dalish elf chick in DA:A. Velanna? Was that her name? I just remember her being really, really cranky and unpleasant to talk to, even as a fellow Dalish elf.

I didn't really like Velanna, either. I did find her plot involvement interesting, but on a personal level she was really unpleasant to be around.

I understand that. That's why I used the word disappointed. There are a few verbally abusive alcoholics in my family. I know what it's like when someone makes progress and then falls flat on their ass. In Origins we made a lot of progress with Oghren, and his character in Awakenings made me feel like I wasted my time. It felt kind of like a slap to the face. It hit too close to home, and I didn't like it. The only thing that could have saved my opinion of Oghren was his funniness, and that was gone too.

I was generally indifferent to Tallis. I probably would have hated her if she wasn't Felicia Day. My biggest problem with her was when she killed the guard and got all "regretful" about it. I found it odd that a woman who winked at a man as she slit his throat would cry over a dead guard. It came completely out of left field and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Tallis annoyed me because of how forced on us she felt. I didn't like her and I didn't agree with her beliefs. It's not so bad with other companions I'm not overly fond of, because I can talk to them when I want and bench them for the rest of the time. Having to have Tallis instead of choosing a companion I liked and would like to hear banter from made the whole DLC less enjoyable. The end especially frustrated me, because I in no way wanted to assist her. I left her in the caves because I didn't want to help her. Still, at the end, I gave her what she wanted. That made it seem like I agreed with her reasoning when it was the opposite of how I really felt.

I didn't like Talis mostly because I really hate giving over a precious group slot to someone that isn't going to stick around. As a character she was okay, I guess, but the railroading at the end was pretty annoying. And I'm someone who was okay with a lot of the railroading in DA2!

Yeah. I would have really liked an option for Mage Hawke (or any Hawke) to ask about the mouth-sewing and the tongue cutting. When you're trying to debate the validity of Qunari values those aspects should definitely come up at some point.

I was fairly indifferent to Tallis. I did not care for her negatively or positively. She was just this third party that came by for a mission is how it felt. It was not enough time to get to know her or really delve into her character beyond the context of the DLC, imo. It is hard for me to get invested in characters when they are only around for a very short portion of time, and I rather our other main-stay companions get more screen time and content than a third-string or fourth-string guest character. Now if the Tallis DLC also made her into a full-game companion, then it'd be different.
Also,
Grey Delisle. One of BW's go-to voice actors since ye ol' Baldur's Gate days, just like Hale, and talent I will never get tired of hearing in their games. Funny enough, I'd love it if Jennifer Hale did one of the voice sets for the lady Inquisitor.

The fact that he can attempt to mutiny the party puts him in the category, to me, but he's definitely not aggressive in the same way that Cassandra is. She's a hot head that just starts screaming and threatening people right off. Sten was a lot more together, he seemed more disciplined and definitely more in control of his emotions. I guess it just comes down to me being uncomfortable with characters that want the lead, on a personal level. I favor the "laid back rogue" types that crack jokes and come along for the ride. Like Varric, Isabela, Zevran, Awakening Anders.
Don't get me wrong, though, it doesn't make them bad characters. There's line between "I like you" and "I like what you add to the story". I absolutely didn't like Sten as an individual. I don't like his belief system and I don't like him. I do like what he adds to the story and I think the Qunari are very interesting from an outside perspective. So far, nobody in a DA game has failed to meet the "I like what you add to the story" category, for me.
When was she like this? Is this when she tried to get Varric to give her information? I thought she was trying to scare him.
