I don't think she'd be like this in a romance necessarily.

I probably won't romance Cassandra anyway but I'd like some yelling matches with the Inquisitor over decisions and things important to the Inquisition.  I very much want her to speak her mind when not agreeing ;)

I want the companions to disagree on things, but at least with LIs, I'd like them to be able to disagree without starting a "screaming match". It's just a huge turn off, for me. If nothing else, I'd at least like there to be an option to speak to them without it escalating to that point. Maybe it could be a "rivalry" type branch of the relationship, or something. Otherwise, I would just not choose them as an LI, personally.

I friendedmanced him, but how possessive he is of you, the way he acts towards the only other male romance. He is more...realistic of abusive relationships. He manipulates, lies, is possessive, and has wild mood swings. A very insidious abusive boyfriend fits him very well, I have had those before, and Anders is more how it is in real lif compared to how most people see it. There is a reason why so few people leave abusive relationships, because how outsiders see it and the person in it see things differently.

I think I didn't really see it that way because I agreed with him on most things and I never pursued Fenris at all. I was pretty annoyed when he didn't tell me what he was planning at the end, but it was more like.. I thought we were in this together, why did you go off on your own with this? But he said it was so I wouldn't cop the blame and I was willing to accept those intentions as plausible. I think his actions read pretty differently depending on the goals and beliefs of your Hawke. To me, it didn't feel like lying and manipulating because I played a "freedom fighter" type mage Hawke that was right there on board with Anders.

I didn't like him at all. You summed him up well.

Sadly, it is still lying to you. You have to be trusted with the information. He still got you to plant the bombs. In a way you helped him do it whether you were planning to or not. The decision should have been your to make.

I think he told my character he didn't deserve our friendship. I was also helping the mages. He said that because he lied and took my trust for granted.

Tallis was fun, sometimes too sueish, but fun. In MoTA she was written better than in Redemption IMHO - that Tallis I wanted to slap for being simply mean to poor Dalish
Besides, I love qunari and two of my Hawkes do as well
It's a shame we couldn't romance Velanna. But in the end she became pretty much a sister to my Dalish Warden, both lost dear people to the taint, both felt lonely among humans, though in terms of personality very different
She kinda reminds me of Fenris, both are frigging tsunderes

I'm not going to pursue the female LIs, so it doesn't really effect me, but I couldn't really deal with an aggressive LI. It would feel too much like domestic emotional abuse, at that point. I can deal with it from a colleague that isn't really even a friend, but not from a partner. I was with someone in my mid teens that always tried to bully me into whatever they wanted by yelling and demanding. Noooooooot going through that again with an imaginary person. lol

I agree. It is another form of disrespect. I hate when i see people do this.

He did lie, but it was easier for me to forgive him because the way I played and the way I envisioned our relationship implied I would have helped him if I knew. We'd been together and been living together for years, so I could pretty easily headcanon that he knew I would support the decision and, this way, I'd still be safe. So, while lying isn't great, I could still see it as not being a dealbreaker level issue. I can easily see why other people saw it as a huge betrayal for their PCs. It just wasn't really for the way I played.

At this point I'm hoping for the Warden. Now he looks like a man with a great sense of humor.

Shut up. I want all the hot guys to be LIs. They're all so perfect...

And for the record, IB and GW are my dream LIs lol, Dorian is my more realistic option.

Amen for IB.  I'm holding out, cautiously optimistic.

Kinda hoping for Varric, too, but my optimism on that's even less.

Right now I'm thinking I want Dorian and Cullen for m/m choices, but I wont really be disappointed if it's Dorian and Solas. I'm still pretty "meh" on the NPC LI thing, even if it's been looking more promising. Cullen is way more attractive than Solas, to me, though. lol

I have Cullen and Dorian as my bisexual male options as well in my 8 LI list.

*snip*

Ok, if Bioware actually spends that much time defining Cullen's ass muscles, I will have found my definition of fan service. :P

That said...I'm suddenly a bit more interested in his character then I was before. ...Yes...definitely his character.

This. I was really... Disappointed in Awakening Oghren. All the character development he went through in Origins was disregarded. He became an unfunny parody of himself.

I remember feeling disappointed when the "mysterious returning DAO companion" in Awakening was revealed to be Oghren (I literally would've taken anyone else over him), and seeing him in action there did nothing to change my opinion of him for the better.  For the record, though, I don't hate him...he does have his amusing moments, but the wise-cracking drunken dwarf character that he embodies is, quite frankly, old hat.

His creepy attraction to Granny Wynne also didn't help matters.  It still makes me shudder.

And while we're on the topic, I've always had a suspicion that the devs were actively trying to mold Oghren into a recurring fan-favorite character -- a role that Varric ended up filling instead.

Relating this back to the topic, one of my enduring frustrations is that people argue that playersexuality destroys character agency, or natural character growth. However, characters like Oghren, who bucked the trend in Origins by not being a companion that could stay "saved" by the Warden's pure force of charisma and bottomless gift sack, tend to get a ton of blowback for not being malleable enough, or not conforming to the player's expectations and efforts. For all people talk about not wanting their PC to be the center of their companions' lives, they tend to get up in arms the moment that something implies that they aren't

Since I was the one who mentioned my dislike of Oghren, I should say that it's not his alcoholism that bothers me. It's his beliefs - the thinly veiled homophobia, the sexism, etc.

I didn't really feel for Oghren, so I get it. Love Varric though and can't wait to see him and catch up on the newest embellishments to my Hawk's legend.

While agree to Oghren having questionable beliefs - I wouldn't have said he was particularly homophobic. He was definitely uncomfortable / confused at the idea of Zevran flirting with him, but he wasn't overtly objectionable when the Warden was in a same sex relationship.

On that note, I disliked how Wynne felt she got a pass to judge a female warden in a relationship (don't know about male) just because of her age. I know it was supposed to be motherly, but the first (few) time(s) I heard it, I felt it was out of the blue. Unprovoked judgments of other characters are unusual to the main character, but really they add depth to the character, and I feel that both Wynne and Oghren surpassed annoyances by providing complex narratives to the world of Thedas.

And here I am, alone in this forum, adoring both Wynne and Oghren in all the games despite their little flaws that only add to their charm...

That's understandable, completely so. I'm not up in arms about people disliking him, as much as I'm just into his character arc, which gets overlooked because it seems broken, when it's actually really complicated, considering what a seemingly one-note character he is.

And I could see some producers/execs wanting to make Oghren a fan favorite, but from what Gaider has said about his inclusion in Awakening being "forced", I don't think that is what the writers had in mind at all. Despite acting like a clown most of the time, his story is actually kind of dark. Aside from also being a male dwarf, Varric feels completely different in every conceivable way from Oghren. I mean, compare how you can stumble over Oghren being openly mocked by guards for wanting to go find Branka versus Varric swooping in to save Hawke's coinpurse and offer her a way out of debt. One is framed as an irredeemable laughingstock, while the other gets to play the charming rogue, and a hero's indispensable right hand.

I did not, anywhere, say I didn't like either character. I pointed out something in particular I didn't like about Wynne and indicated that either or both characters could be found annoying. I think certain traits were made to be annoying, but that doesn't stop one from liking any particular character (in any franchise / story / whatever).
