I think it's actually more disturbing when a character I'm interested in is unavailable to me just because I made my character look like me than if the character is not an LI at all. I have tried several times and do not enjoy playing a male character. It's not fun for me, and the gameplay differences are so tiny that I can't justify being miserable for 40 hours for a romance. If they're not a romance option in the first place I can deal with it, but to think that someone else deserves that character more because they can stomach playing as a male character just feels weird.
It's not "deserve," and I don't think thinking about it that way is helpful.
Me, on the other hand, I'd rather be rejected because I'm the "wrong" gender than something else like race or class (major plot decisions are okay, though). Because that's actually a valid reason to reject me. I can't make myself be attracted to women. Just can't! So hearing "sorry, I'm not into chicks" doesn't ping any outrage for me. "Sorry, I'm not into dwarves" absolutely would, because that's not some hard-wired preference impossible to overcome unless you're a racist.
That said, of course I'd rather everyone was available, because I like the variety. Sometimes I don't know who would be best with one of my characters until I'm actually playing them, and it would make me sad if, say, the dude inquisitor I made would be totally adorable with whoever winds up being the lesbian, or that my lady inquisitors will never make out with whoever winds up being the gay dude. But it's a lot easier for me to swallow (hurr) than "sorry, I'm not into rogues."
