Your comment: "Bioware hasn't offered options to gay men in "all" their games. They didn't even get around to adding them to the Mass Effect series until the last game and, even then, it's not like it was an even spread

ME3 has 2 for gay men.

From another poster we learned the following about ME3

"In any give game:

Straight males - 1-3 LI's
Lesbians - 2 LI's
Gay males - 1-2 LI's
Straight females - 0-2 LI's”

It looks pretty even. The only one ahead is straight males.

Did you know that ME3 is the last game in the series? That it is, in fact, the game that Mort de Minuit is already referring to?

But that's false: straight males have Liara, Jack, Tali, Ashley, Miranda that's five LI options.

If anything, everyone except straight males have been shafted.

I would count Kaidan, Garrus and Thane for women, plus Kaidan and Garrus alone are two companion LIs with way more content than Cortez. It's my opinion, but I would easily trade the gay male selection for the straight female selection in ME3. I know Cortez is always available, but that's not an even trade off, imo. I'd rather play ME2 and have more options. Especially if it meant actually having an option in ME2.

Agreed with this. Everyone except straight males got a lame deal in ME3.

What does (Mass Effect series until the last game and, even then, it's not like it was an even spread.) mean?

I read this as even ME3 was not evenly spread. The word and as including.

And if you count the Citadel DLC, you can add Samara to the list.

Actually as a straight female I would take Cortez over Garrus and Thane easy.

Well, we could hash it out as to which demographic that always gets an unfair deal got the most unfair deal, but the fact is that it would still be an uneven spread when you consider straight male LIs.

I didn't come up with the table. It's one of the post on this thread. I believe the person wanted to exclude ME2 picks.

Yes they cater to straight men. It does look like they are trying to change. We have to consider some of them are booby prizes as well. I don't have a problem with Bi-sexual choices. I'm just pointing out that even when you look at the number of choices there maybe a reason some are excluded.

I don't think it's fair to discount some characters just because they die or leave you.

In media, gay characters often meet some awful, tragic end, and that is a concerning trend that should stop, but it's still better than having literally nothing at all.

This is misleading because ME3 is the first game they tried.
Straight males had 2 in first game, 3 in second game and 1 NPC, 3rd game they have a choice between 1-3 and 1 NPC
So...6-8 companions and 2 NPCs(out of these 6 of them are exclusively straight and all companions)

Lesbians- first game 1, second game 1 NPC, and third game 1 companion and 2 NPC, so that is a total of 2 companions and 3 NPCs the companions are the same person and only 1 NPC is exclusive

Straight women- 1 option in first game, 3 in second game, and 0-2 in third game, no NPCs so total 4-6 companions no NPCs
5 of whom are straight exclusively.

Gay men- 0 first game, 0 second game, 0-1 in 3rd game with one NPC. Only that NPC is exclusive to them

Now tell me those numbers are anywhere near fair

If im not mistaken, that hasnt happened to any da series yet. Well except for anders, but then it happened to both male and female toons.

The original poster never meant to mislead. It was a discussion about ME3 only.

I posted it because of the sentence.

They didn't even get around to adding them to the Mass Effect series until the last game and, even then, it's not like it was an even spread.

I took the "and even then" to include ME3. In M3 it looks as if they tried to even it out. Only the straight male was ahead by one.

It happens to "implied" NPC couples fairly often (Branka and Hespith, Seamus and Ashaad, Leliana and Marjolaine) but not so much yet with PC LIs.

Well I wasn't talking about Dragon Age, I was talking about an overall media trend.

Actually, I disagree. Quantity is not better than Quality.

You can't have quality without quantity. For the content to be "quality" it has to actually exist first.

And romance stories that end sadly are not automatically bad.

@ Luca Stern

Cole is not a romance option for anyone. He has the mind of a child.

Varric I don't know for sure. He has issues over Bianca.

That gives us 4 males. That being the case it is 50%.

One or two can be a booby prize. Someone who dies, turns on you or dumps you. I'm thinking Cullen may turn into a booby prize.

I made a graphic or whatever without the blond guy, because of the dev comments on Cole having the mind of a child. If you want to exclude him and Varric from your list that still leaves Iron Bull, the bearded Warden, DHMG, Cullen and Solas. That would be 5. I won't exclude Varric from my list unless there is a dev comment saying or strongly suggesting there won't be a Varric romance.

Actually, I disagree. Quantity is not better than Quality.

The issue is that "quality" is way more subjective. A lot of people maintain that Alistair and Garrus are the best written, best integrated LIs of DA and ME respectively, for example. One person's "best romance ever" is going to be the worst for another, which is why quantity tends to imply a better chance of getting one you'll like.

So straight guys/girls put yourself in other shoes to realize these complaints.

Straight guys imagine in the first game Kaiden was bi, Ash(who is a guy in this scenario) is gay, and Liara was a lesbian.
No options

In 2 all the Women are Lesbians, all the men are gay, 1 man assistant swings both ways.

In 3 when you chose between Ash and Liara, if you chose Liara, she has hidden feelings that are just now coming out. And the female pilot is getting over her dead husband, if you comfort her she is straight!

Your only options for a girl were Liara for one part of the game, and sarah Cortez the other games No options.
You would complain when they said they were doing it again...

BioWare just want players to have choices (at least 2 of them going by Gaider's comment on the subject), fairness has never been the point.

Also, I find comparing with older games sort of worthless. Homosexuality was still a social taboo a few years ago and still is in many places (and to many people). Have people already forgotten the FOX news scandal with ME1 and the female/female sex with Asari?
