I wouldn't be surprised if they showcased a little romance. Though I am certain it would be Dudequisitor and Cassandra illustrating it.

They didn't with DA2.

They did with Origins.

My guess is that they might release a couple of romance-related tidbits as they reveal/spotlight companions (allegedly they're going to be doing that again at some point...), but we won't have the entire roster until close to the game being released.

Did they tell people which characters you could romance before the game was released or did noone know until it was out?

I'd rather they didn't showcase a bit of romance in trailers or marketing

They wrote something for them on Valentine's day.

They did do a Valentine's Day announcement of who was romancable, but then that was only a few weeks before DA2 came out. So in September at PAX, maybe. But in June at E3, no.

I know that Gaider has recently confirmed that Saemus was not straight, but I have to say that I never really picked up a m/m vibe from Saemus and Ashaad. I guess it was intended and just really subtle. I usually sniff these things out pretty quickly. I picked up on Julien and Nicolas (in The Calling) in their second scene.
Really? I thought it was really obvious from how Sameus talked about Ashaad that he had strong feelings for him, and that mercenary basically says they were banging.

Point is there is no precedence for what they may or may not show. Hence, I would not be surprised if they do show something. I didn't say they certainly would.

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense. It does seem likely that they'd want to keep that stuff close to the chest for a while longer so they can slowly feed out the info or wait for some special event like PAX. When they did the Valentine's thing, did they also reveal that the romances were available to any player or was that a surprise?

I believe they said all 4 were available to either gender, to ease the fears of the ones who were scared of only having one option again.

I recall there being doubt as to whether or not all four were bisexual right up until the week before release; there were leaked images of Merrill's romance scene with fem-hawke and people were sure it was fake.

Did they? I thought they simply revealed the names, and then someone hacked the demo to and came screaming to the forums that they were all bi. I'm pretty sure Maria told me that.

Well, no of course not. But your reasoning for him not being bi or gay was because qunari are traditional. So that's why everyone is pointing out that he is, in fact, very non-traditional. No one is saying that he is definitely bi or gay, but I don't see any reason why he couldn't be.
The talk earlier about there being an LI who was struggling with their sexuality could be him? I mean, he left the Qun a while ago so maybe not, but that would also be a decent way to have a character struggle with their sexuality without making it too analogous to the real world. I mean, really, coming from the Qun, any sexuality would be something new-not that they didn't have sexuality but it doesn't seem Qunari were encouraged to express romantic love with anyone. Thats still not an LI storyline I want to see personally, but it could fit, and putting it in the context of the Qun would probably make it the most interesting(to me, not necessarily for everyone, obviously).

Before I play, I will spoil myself to who is romanceable than go dark, but since that is revealed last, I just hope I dont accidentally get spoiled to other things in the mean time

That could be too. The demo was out around then.

Honestly the romances are the only thing I want to spoil myself on. It prepares for disappointment and planning. Everything else I want to be new and fresh and bright and surprising. But I would have chased Aveline right through until she got with Donnic otherwise. I dont want that.

Yeah, I definitely want to know that ahead of time. I don't care if it's 'realistic' or not, I don't want to be any more disappointed than I will probably already be, haha. (On my female Hawke playthrough, I did end up playing a few hours into DA2 wanting/trying to romance Aveline before I looked it up and found out I couldn't.)

I know it's been PAGES, but ...
Even though DA has handled romances better overall, I kind of like the Kaidan romance the best of all Bioware's m/m relationships. Not like it's a huge hurdle, though. I mean, Anders was fighting for something, but unfortunately it wasn't this.
Obviously I'm viewing it through a straight woman lens, but I found the ManShep/Kaidan romance superior to the FemShep/Kaidan one, in part because you couldn't romance him until ME3. My "canon" ManShep started out romancing Ashley, but he shed a manly tear as he rescued Kaidan instead, and he had no good answer when Kaidan angsted about why. By the time I got to the end of ME1, I remember thinking, "You know, it's dumb I can't get together with Kaidan. It just works, somehow." Their fight on Horizon seemed just as charged as my romanced-Kaidan FemShep's fight, which reinforced my "Seriously, they'd be adorable!" leanings.
And then in ME3, they finally realize they've cared about each other that way all along, which is a trope I can be a sucker for if it's done right, and I think ME3 did pretty okay with it. They just sort of slot in together, in a way that makes you think, "D'awwww." It was probably the most organic-feeling m/m romance I've done in a Bioware game (although I heart Zevran forever and ever and ever, the whole he-tried-to-kill-me thing puts a teeny damper on the "does this make a lick of sense" front.). No dead spouse, no weird baggage, no attempted murder, no zealotry, just a bit of an entirely-justified trust issue that gets resolved before it gets annoying.
There was also no whining I cheated on him. That was a big plus. ![]()
On the WHOLE, I like DA's romances better. But I really have a soft spot for Kaidan/ManShep! ![]()

I think that's what happened. They never said anything. There was like a screenshot of F!Hawke/Merrill leaked.

Hell, it wasn't until my second playthrough that I realized they were all open to me. It was an exciting time.
