I'm fond of dealbreaker moments in the games. I think it gives the companions a more "individual" feeling. It makes them seem more whole as people that they wont always just go along with any choice you make. I wouldn't mind more dealbreaker instances where the companion just feels they need to end the relationship, but doesn't feel the transgression was strong enough for them to leave, or attack you.

My preference would be if they tried to make it more of a choice thing than the "Alistair has to breed" thing in Origins. I mean, that kind of made sense, except it's not like he's ever actually made an effort to produce and heir, so it falls kind of flat, for me. To me, it would be better if it dealt with the way you handled situations related to their beliefs, like Leliana and the ashes, or Anders and the demon deal.

Yeah.

Companions and NPC characters just aren't the same type of character mechanically.  I don't know how they could be considered equal.

Oh great, you gave me an NPC lesbian option and it's my option and she's somehow going to be equal to Cassandra.

Yeah, can I take her with me in the party to fight bad guys/gals?  No.

Do I get to hear her interjections and opinions on my decisions during quests related dialogue?  No.

Do I get to experience party banter with her and other party members as we travel Thedas?  No.

If 'lesbian NPC romance character' could do this she wouldn't be an npc but a companion.

So...I don't see how this can be a remotely similar experience.

This is exactly one reason why. NPC romances offer a unique experience.

I see where you are coming from, but on the other hand I like having the choice to take my LI with me.  As someone earlier in the thread stated (Hina, I think): With a companion romance, you at least have the option of leaving them behind.  I've done a session as well where I romanced Leliana and didn't have her in my party very much.  However, I knew that I could go back, pick her up and have more interactions with her should I so choose.  Instead, I don't have that choice, no matter how much I like the NPC.

As always though, life will go on for me.  If I don't like NPC romances, then I'll just skip them and wish others well that do enjoy that option.  <shrug> Thanks to you as well for giving your PoV about this.   :)

I said no such thing. I'm for NPC romances.

I'll just leave the companion romance character back at the base and get the same unique experience.

No, because people who are only noncombatants have a different mindset than those who are.

Are we even sure any of the advisors will be noncombatants, though? Cullen and Leliana aren't noncombatants. Scribbles only might be.

What do you mean by 'noncombatant'?

Is Leliana one?

Unless they actively fight, they are noncombatants.

Even soldiers who put up their arms and no longer fight are considered such.

I'm not sure that's even true about the advisors. Cullen might fight with the Inquisition army. Leliana might actively work at gathering information herself. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they didn't have an active role. They seem like a waste of talent benched, especially Leliana. She's got the most impressive resume of any of the 12 people around the table, imo.

But they have a mindset of one because they can be used as a companion. Cullen, Leliana, and Scribbles cannot and thus have a different mindset.

I'm limited in romances as it is. Don't try to add more limitations.

How would no NPC romances be limiting?

I would have been totally fine with the 2 NPC romances if they hadn't gender gated companion romances. I'm just disappointed that we'll only likely get one companion LI choice. I'm not saying I never want them to do NPC LIs, just that they should secure the choice of 2 companion LIs for everyone first.

They technically do. If you play as a male, you can romance straight female or gay male. If you play as a female, you can romance straight male or gay female.

There would be companions romances to take their place.  Same number of options.

Did you feel limited in other games because there was only companion options?

The same amount of options could be there, but just with companions.

It would still be limiting because it would only be companion romance options for those people

When I said "everyone", I meant "every demographic they usually concern themselves with offering choices to", not "both genders".

Totally agreed. I'm not opposed to set sexualities or NPC romances, but I'd rather not have both at the same time if we're only getting 6 romances. As you said, being able to choose between 2 companions should be the priority.

Be so much simpler if they stuck with DA2's system, but no we had to go with the SSSS. Then again they'd proably not do NPC LIs then because they'd only make 4.
