I agree with the "going out with a bang" perspective. To me, that's a lot more fulfilling than just having him die in the hospital.
Well, he still dies in a hospital. ![]()

It's not so much about the sad, so much as emotionally manipulative stuff I dislike. It seemed in DA2, that all your potential romances were unhealthy or at least unwise. There was no one that you could definitely say was truly sincere on either your Hawke's end or theirs.
Maybe I was spoiled by Garrus, but sometimes you don't want to have to wonder if your LI has other reasons for being with your PC than out of love or that perhaps, you'll wake up and have to start running because your LI had maybe something to do with setting the city on fire.
Also, in Origins, in my opinion, Alistair was the only one that didn't feel started out of some sort of manipulation or otherwise very sketchy event. You fought and survived the betrayal of Ostagar, have fought battles against darkspawn, so him falling for the Warden made sense.
Morrigan--Her romance has her planning to have the Warden get her pregnant, then ends up falling for him anyway. Awesome storyline, not the healthiest start.
Leliana--She alludes more than once (if hardened) that she "knows how to wrap people around her little finger." Which throws much of her "vision by the Maker" into question for me. I still like the character and is my favorite out of the two bisexual romances in Origins, but was she just using the Warden to close the book on her past? That's unknown, but threw the whole relationship into a very uncomfortable light.
Zevran--Starts off with trying to kill you, for goodness sake! While it does grow into love, again, not a healthy start.
Then there is the mess in DA2...
Well, he still dies in a hospital.
Fair enough. lol
I agree. I thought that Thane would have rather go out doing that instead of just wasting away. I dunno. It seemed appropriate.
Bonus points for doing it to Kai Leng, too.

Merrill's was innocent, but then it was supposed to be the innocent love story of that game.

Unless you rivalmanced her. Then it was kinda iffy.

I always saw Leliana as a chessmaster pushing the Warden's buttons.

True. I never Rivalmance though.
Except Fenris once and that caught me by surprise since I didn't know it existed. ![]()
I don't know. Being able to knock a heavily-augmented assassin on his rear just before you go seems satisfying.
Jumping on his sword however is quite braindead.

It depends upon how I'm roleplaying my Warden at the time, and whether or not I romance her. The only thing I can say is that the implications aren't very comforting.

Oof, that's quite the character to have an accidental rival romance with. For the record, while I got the Rivalry system on a friendship level (I've had those friendships,) I really didn't get it for romances. That just seems...off to me. Nothing against those that enjoy it, but it didn't seem like a healthy relationship for a romantic couple to have.

Thane spent too much time watching Star Wars in the hopital and thought the "Strike me down and I'll become more powerful than you can imagine" thing was legit. ![]()
in his defense, his ghost does show up in the Citadel DLC if romanced.

lmao
I liked the rivalry romances. Though they could've used some serious tweaking. To me it's fantasy. I'm not always looking for a healthy romance for my mass murdering PCs ![]()

That was a nice touch. Citadel in general was a really nice touch. Grunt's scene man. XD
From what I observed after the ME3, I thought the Thane kerfuffle was about Shepard not being able to show sorrow and/or mourning for Thane if he was romanced. It seems Citadel fixed this, but yeah...>.>

Yeah, we were arguing in my house, he pinned me against the wall and we stared at each other a few moments before kissing passionately and then fade to black. I was like "Well...that happened.

Grunt's scene is one of the Top 5 funniest scenes in ME.
I actually liked Thane's ending. His time was limited from the start, and he does let you know that. A brief, sweet interlude was all it could ever be, and as sad as the end scene was it was still more fitting than him just withering away in the hospital. Or an inglorious death when the Citadel gets overrun.
The prayer gets me choked up every time, dammit.
As unhealthy as they were, I preferred the romances in DA2 over DA:O. Everyone was a misfit with their own agenda, and while they might have looked up to and followed Hawke, it never really felt like they were cavorting around Hawke's heels like a puppy waiting for praise. You were the leader, but not their keepers. ...Mostly.
I do hope the companions in Inquisition are more along that line, where everyone has their own point and purpose in life beyond following their wonderful leader around. And I want the romances to follow that same line too. Being their own person makes them more interesting as friends and as romantic partners.
I always saw Leliana as a chessmaster pushing the Warden's buttons.
Me too. Very much so. I prefer to headcanon her this way as well. One of the reasons I am eager to see Leliana in Inquisition is to see her (completely) in her element and what new angles to her character we may see.

I may not know what you look like, but this look comes to mind when you saw that. At least this is the look I'd have:

XD I have to admit Fenris is my fav rivalrymance. But I play it as snarky Hawke and it really works very well if trolly.
Grunt's scene is one of the Top 5 funniest scenes in ME.
"apologize to the nice man Grunt." *beat* "I'm sorry." I always crack up there.
I feel like the thing about DA2's romances were that they mostly varied in tone extremely depending on the type of character you played, due to the types of characters DA2 had. That could work for or against you, I think. If you wanted to be the diplomatic, take no sides type, it mostly wasn't a great game for you.

I'm laughing because I can relate to this, even as someone that prefers snarky Hawkes. I tried the "middle of the road" approach my first time. I ended up, without meaning to, having Merrill as a rival (I didn't agree with blood magic,) Fenris stuck at neutral, Isabela also neutral and leaving at the end of Act 2 (no clue about needing 50 friendship/rivalry to get her to stay,) Anders at max friendship (at least I did that on purpose) as well as Aveline (same.) ![]()
Needless to say it was a bit of a mess, and a system that I believe will be greatly improved upon in Inquisition. ![]()

The only problem I had with Thane was him being a LI option in the first place. What with his dead wife he so vividly remembers, his adult son, his advanced age, his health condition... all of which could be considered serious baggage... and then he dies in the end! Imma shoot something if any of the LIs in Inquisition end up being like that. I'm a little worried that Beardy in particular, IF he's a romance at all, might share some similarities with Thane in this regard.
Just... I don't necessarily oppose tragic romances as such. I just really thought Thane was too much.

To me, she was the crazy girl that always angrily insisted we were in a relationship that I was never informed of. I seriously could not dodge that ninjamance.
Anders. Anders, Anders, Anders.
My first Hawke, my rogue, loved him to bits. She shrugged at the revelation that he had lied to her and was just like.. Well, come on then, let's go clean it up.
My current Hawke, who is a mage, romanced Fenris. She hates Anders, and only keeps him on because healing. When the bombing happened, she stood in shock, and when she came to, in a blind rage, she just started punching him. The others had to restrain her so she didn't murder him right there. She told Seb to screw off and then stood there fuming and forced Anders to clean up the mess he caused. She aided the mages only out of a sense of duty.
Now, with Fenris, I imagine they just chill a lot, smoking whatever pain-numbing agents they can get their hands on and playing with his tattoos. Headcanon: touching them with magicked fingers causes feedback and some.. interesting things happen if done over nerve clusters. ;D
But yes. Sod Anders. Nug-licking arseface.
