I felt it was ridculous. It's okay for Garrus to look completely unhumanoid but woe betide the female LIs do the same.

They can a lot of fantasy races are way too though humanoid.

Yeah, I spoke a little quickly. I see what you mean.

Oh. Fair enough.

Look I just want a relationship if it must be dysfunctional to be the fun burning the house around our ears while partying dysfunctional and not the let me angst on you type.

Sexy boys crying makes me harder than granite. I would've jumped on Alistair like he was a trampoline.

But... media tells me that chicks dig scars. ):

Oh, sure. Scars are awesome on guys - a badge of honor and all that. On girls? Horrible blemish. Ruins us forever. No one will be able to look upon our tragically marred face, and we will be left to wither away in spinsterhood.

On a more serious note, I'm female and straight but will freely admit that Cassandra is someone I will try romancing at some point no matter which gender she is interested in. I can't explain why either. Just something about her, looks included.

Um... I don't think my profanity filter is working.

The filter is very specific I believe.  I'd recommend editing out the post (unless you want it to stay there...) and sending someone like Jesse Reid a PM about it.

Nah if you put it in plural you can get away with swears. BW's master filter at work.

Lol. Good one.

Though i do wonder why h0mo is in asterisks. It's not even an insult.

Edit: Ladies with scars.

I'm gay as a maypole, and I didn't see anything to indicate that Wade and Herren were even friends. Herren seems to genuinely hate Wade basically all of the time.

Honestly, the fact that a lot of people saw two effete, high-voiced men and immediately went "LOL FAGGOTS" is pretty offensive to me.  :?

  That...wasn't what I thought.  At all.  It's not cool to assume that just because they had a high pitched voice is what the give away was for me at least, so ease up.

They struck me as a couple, not due to the manners of speech, but how they acted towards each other.  To me, they acted like a couple that once loved each other, but fell out of love years before the Fifth blight.  I never doubted that they were a couple, I just thought it was sad that the writing team didn't show a gay couple that was actually in love and acting like it.

This is a bit off-topic, but I remember correctly, Casey Hudson did say neither Garrus nor Tali was created with romance in mind (which shows in ME1) because they thought "nobody would want someone with chicken legs." Fan feedback is why they made them love interests in ME2.

That said, the idea of 'conventionally hot' really means little to me. It's true that I'm more likely to romance a character who is hot, but if they are as interesting as a brick wall, then it's probably not going to happen.

Which is why I always try to make sure I'm focusing on homosexual representation when I talk about representation.

I'm not particularly interested in having set sexualities for the benefit of heterosexual players.  But when a few gay people tell me that they really appreciated it, it makes me pause and wonder if I should reevaluate.  I'm significantly more interested in giving queer players something and denying heterosexual players a piece of content.

I think it'd be interesting if the most sought after characters were actually the gay characters.

I can understand it.  It's why I am a big supporter of choice being available, and can greatly understand the equivalence of choice.  I mentioned it in my wall o' text, but it was interesting and eye opening to have someone tell me that, frankly, they enjoy the idea of having a gay romance be solely gay simply from the perspective of "it feels like content that was specifically made to acknowledge me and that felt great."  I realized that it's something that I take for granted because content is often made "for me."

Thanks for the response, Allan! I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts. I also sort of hope that the most 'sought after' characters are the gay ones! Maybe it'd be an opportunity for straight folk to understand how it felt to fruitlessly pine after Alistair for 50+ hours of gameplay, hahaha...

If I'm being totally honest, I DO want set sexualities in the sense that I want there to be 'real' gay and bisexual (not playersexual) characters populating my party. I totally get that feeling of "Here's a character that was made just for me and not because Bioware wants to make sure straight guys get to bang all the chicks." Frankly, I'd be perfectly happy if our party consisted of nothing but bisexuals, gay men and lesbians! But the reality is that us queer folk tend to need to be careful about respecting "fairness", because society in general is a lot less tolerant if they think "giving stuff to queer people" means "taking something away from straight people".

Well, I feel like it makes my point more effectively, but I get in enough trouble already.

I'd be another example. I actually look a fair bit like Cullen, though with much darker hair. Except I'm about 5'6 1/2. Basically, Tom Cruise syndrome.

It's cool. I have a half brother. He has Tom Cruise syndrome. I'm nearly a foot taller.

But they didn't show her face til ME3 after she was a LI. And I'm pretty sure they showed a whole horde of concept arts. Some very alien looking. And instead they settled with that very humanoid classically pretty looking face.

I'm totally OK with it. But there are women (and men) out there who are not into short guys. Hence unconventional.

Height isn't everything. I grew up in Texas, being a tall Asian looking guy. Know what I was called by the rednecks around here? Yao Ming.

Not cool.

Does it need to be though outright stated in the game?  I'll grant you that Wade and Herren didn't act like a healthy couple, but I at least had no doubt that they were lovers.  Most straight couples (in a game or out of it) don't always walk around holding hands and saying cutesy things together all the time to announce their sexuality, so I don't see an absolute need for it here.  They do strike me as a couple that has stuck around long after the love is gone though.

On the flip side, I'd like to see a gay couple who's story doesn't end in tragedy.  Leliana and Marjolaine; Brakha and Hespith;  and now the business with the Empress.  I personally don't need to see a gay couple announce their sexuality.  What I would like to see is a stable and healthy gay couple that at least shows a few signs of being in love.  A loving look, a touch on the cheek, a quick statement of "Of course, dear" said in loving tones would go a very long way towards showing a less tragic gay couple.

I think, sadly, to some extent, it DOES need to be stated outright. Because if it's not, there will always be people who just 'don't see it' or who actively argue that a character ISN'T queer. Because of heteronormativity, we tend to assume people are straight until proven not. Straight couples don't need to walk around being cutesy together to prove they're a couple because we will assume they are without any explicit evidence. If that evidence isn't there for a gay couple, much of the time the viewer/player just won't even notice it, or will argue that they aren't gay because 'there's no evidence'.

I 100% agree with you that we need some queer stories in the DA world that aren't tragic. When you list them all out like that, yikes.

I would feel a lot better about "conventional beauty standards" being subverted if it didn't seem like most of the time that's way more slanted towards the male choices than the female choices.

I have been debating whether or not to make a response to Allan's post on that particular topic.  Women in BioWare games, as with the majority of the games industry, still do adhere to conventional beauty standards.  Majority of women LIs and women companions/characters in general have very estrogen-fused facial features -- plump lips, softer features, etc -- and delicate noses, symmetry of features, thin arched brows, bigger eyes, hourglass slender bodyshapes even when strong muscular characters like Aveline are "buff," and similar silhouettes.

Cassandra and Aveline may have some atypical features, but they don't deviate from the general standard that much.  I still think I could open a high fashion magazine and see Cassandra modeling in it.

Spoiler

Right?

Like... Cassandra has a "masculine jaw"? Pffffffffffffft. Call me back when she's eight feet tall with corpse-coloured skin and horns.

It reminds me.  Prior to DA:O's release, Morrigan (and company) underwent several redesigns on their character models.  There were screenshots of some of the designs that we'd pass around on the (old old) forums.   A couple of those had Morrigan with a pronounced chin/jaw due to angle of the screenshot and it still being a work in progress. But goodness, the sheer number of threads, whining, and outright insulting over the more "masculine jaw" were ridiculous.

I often see it used as one.  It's a bit off topic but it does seem to be something about the software.  Queer was filtered before, though was removed when someone brought it up.  I suspect something like homos may get by, but restricting the first 4 letters universally would prevent me from using the term homosexual, which wouldn't be a good thing.

Well, it was just easier to go with a humanoid face. But they also had the fans wrapped around their finger by that point. If Tali had turned out to be Han Solo then chances are nobody would have been disappointed owing to the irreversible power of LOVE!

Perspective is a funny thing. I have a gay family member who acts and even sounds like Wade with his partner and didn't find it at all hard to believe those two were a couple.

I was in the group discussion where people didn't seem to care as long as they got to see a face. Don't think I ever posted in the public thread so I'm not entirely sure what was going on in there.
