If you are not romancing two characters and they end up hooking up with each other do you approve or disapprove? Is it just jealousy because in a previous playthroughs you romanced one of the said characters? Or is it just some weird thing where only you want to be the only one allowed to romance?

I personally I have mixed feelings about Fenris and Izzy. On the one hand they go really well together, on the other hand, they kinda go too well together. Like, just based on what I've heard their relationship sounds healthier and more fulfilling (even if they're just kinda getting together to bang) than the relationship either one of them could have with Hawke. It's makes romancing either of them kinda depressing, knowing they'd be better off/happier without Hawke. This is why I have no mixed feelings about Tali and Garrus, because the two of them seem equally happy whether they end up with Shepard or each other.
Well, just wait until Isabela tells Fenris about the time she drowned a shipload of slaves to save her own skin.
That'll get him hot fo' sho'.

It's always hard to understand a wierdness that is not our own, but trying to be sympathetic, I'm thinking that maybe it's not alll about being terribly possessive. Maybe it's more that seeing one your favourites LI looking happy with another companion breaks the illusions of him/her being in love with your PC, because you carry what you see about him/her from one playthrough to another, the same way that most people think that Anders is hiding from female Hawke a gay relationship. Maybe some people see having 3 or 4 LI at your disposal like meaning that all of them are in love with you, and if one playthrough shows them otherwise it ruins a little the romance... I don't know
I see a difference between ME 1 Shepard meeting Liara and starting a romance with her that carries over four years vs Tali and Garrus knowing one another for four years and ending up together because they haven't developed emotional bonds with people outside the group.Is it any less incestuous when you're the one romancing them? It isn't about jealousy for more but more about OTPs. I get really obsessed with OTPs, not just in video games but in other things, too. Sometimes I can't even look at fanart or read fanfiction that depicts one half of my OTP with someone else.
So for me in DA2 my OTP is M!Hawke x Fenris. Hence FenBela just drives me up the wall and sends me into a frothy rage 
Of course, another aspect of this is whether or not I feel the pairing makes sense to me. FenBela does not make sense to me, at least not for Fenris' character.
That doesn't mean someone else can't come behind me and say, "But FenBela makes perfect sense to me!" and they'd be perfectly right. Hell, their own WRITERS clearly think it makes perfect sense. It's all about how each individual player/reader "reads" the character.
If I don't have an OTP, and the pairing makes sense to me, I'm fine with it. Hence I'm fine with Garrus x Tali. I will say that I wouldn't have minded a little set-up on that one, as they hardly seem to even talk before this. The two engineers were handled much better (then again, neither was a romance option). Garrus x Tali seems like the writers just put two names in a hat and those were the ones they pulled out first.

I tried to romance Merrill and when i found out about this, it was painful. And then i went in 'lolnope' mode and decided to never romance anyone other than Izzy. Never again.

Funny you should mention that because F!Hawke x Isabela is my other OTP I don't feel as strongly about that one, but in my perfect headcanon world, the Hawke's are fraternal twins, and he ends up with Fenris while she ends up with Isabela.

I was just reading the old threads of various games and came across a thread where a poster wanted a way yo keep Tali and Garrus from hooking up without having to kill or romance either of them. I have to wonder the general opinion.

Personally I love that this happens. When I first saw Tali and Garrus together, I liked the hook up so much I disregarded my Tali romance Playthrough and haven't touched the two ever since. I feel that when your companions peruse their own love lives they become more alive to me.
I don't mind it, but I prefer it happen with two non-romancable companions. I feel weird romancing Tali and Garrus now because I feel like I'm breaking them up. Shame since they are my fav LI of each gender.
@Hinata Hyuuga: I don't GarrusxFemShep is my OTP, so I did get a little bit of animosity towards Tali when I found out they hook up. It's not real anger or hate, more like Fem!Hawke's animosity towards Bethany if she romances Sebastian--they still love each other, but there's a general air of "I saw him first".
And that's why I don't feel like I broke them up. "I saw him/her first."

The bolded text is something that happens to me. It feels like the LI didn't really care about me because he is willing to start a new relationship with somebody while I'm around although I have another LI in that playthrough.
I assume Isabela is in a wide-range of relationships even if she's hooked up with my PC. They're just not tacky enough to talk about it in front of Marian.
Alternatively, I think Fenris sleeps with Isabela because he knows all of four women and they're married, a blood-mage, a lesbian, or Isabela. Which makes it another case of 'I wish you had some emotional connections outside this group.'
By the time they start hooking up it's Act III and Fenris has made an extra friend or two. He definitely spends time with at least Donnic, which would imply to me he's just branched out a little. They're definitely friends with benefits (with an emphasis on actually being friends), Fenris doesn't love Isabela, but he certainly likes her and cares about her wellbeing.
I like companions getting into romances with other companions. I actually wish it happened more often, cos I seem to miss them in most games - IE. In my first DA2 playthrough, I actually lost Isabella at the end of Act II, so it didn't happen in my first playthrough. 2nd playthough, romanced Fenris...so nope. 3rd playthrough, slept with everyone, but stuck with Izzy...so nope. 4th playthrough, it finally happened! But at this point I had heard about it off the internet and was basically bringing Izzy and Fenris with me just to hear that one line of banter - otherwise my warrior Hawke wouldn't have brought Fenris along at all.
Maybe it'd just be better (IMO) if it came up in actual dialogs/cutscenes, instead of just banter.
I think we (the players) have had plenty of situations in games where we had to make decisions that put our loved ones at risk - it would be an interesting change for once to have 2 companions that are involved with each other, that we have to make an important decision regarding.
