I also don't go blabbing my past relationships to all and sundry.

Part of the issue in this context, though, is that Anders will in some cases (if Hawke is male) and not in others (if Hawke is female). Since the only indications that Anders isn't conventionally straight come from the Male Hawke route, this can inadverdandently, how did Maria put it? 'In my first playthrough the face of the oppressed and victimized was a straight white man with super powers?'

So impressions can vary, and since Anders will share with one partner it can be odd that he doesn't with another who is, almost, the same person.

Personally I wonder if this is part of Gaider's own perspective/bias bleeding through. I'm fairly sure he's made a comment in the past on the subject to the point of 'what sort of guy would tell a woman he's interested in/in a relationship with that he'd been in a past relationship with another guy?'

I took it as a granted that it would be shared like in our world (like a partner being frank about their previous relationships with men/women), but Gaider seemed to have a different view. I don't quite see why that real-world stigma or social conceit should carry over into the DA setting, a bisexual-friendly setting by all appearances, but it doesn't keep me up at night.

Well, that's a valid criticism, and in fact, it's all throughout the DA series. The lore tells us that homosexuality is largely accepted, but Zevran acts like the Warden might stab him when he brings up his own same-sex experiences.

It also tells us that women are allowed to fight in the military in most countries, and are respected. Plus, there are several prominent female warriors in their dominant religion and folk stories, but if you actually play a woman, several characters act super-surprised that you aren't in a kitchen.

I think the writers wanted to create a progressive setting, but they struggle to actually realise the vision in practice.

That and there is more than 1 writer handling everything so it makes it more difficult for them to fully ensure things are not going to disagree in areas.

Just look at any major comic book that has more than 1 writer to see that.

Everything still goes through David Gaider's hands for approval.

And, quite frankly, it seems like the sort of thing that could've been easily fixed by having a group meeting and establishing guidelines for the sorts of comments that do or don't make sense in the context of the setting.

Why is it so strange that Anders would tell something to a male Hawke, but not the female Hawke? Wouldn't it be easier to talk to someone about same sex relationships if they themselves were into it? Or talk about relationships with someone of the same gender in general?

Fereldens consider same sex relations strange anyhow, telling a femHawke that early on that "hey I've been with men too" seems odd.

In DA:O I get the impression some if it's inconsistencies might be the result of the long development time - their ideas for how thedosian gender relations changed during development.  For example, the notes in the toolset make it clear that when it was being written the clerics were men.

In real life, sure. In videogames, when the content is there, and especially when it seems to be hidden away to make straight players comfortable or to make them feel special, there's a real problem.

The problem doesn't seem very real when the cause is made up. Problem seems more to be with the assumptions people make.

If Anders was made to make straight people feel special, why then do we have the flirt scene that can only be avoided with 10 rivalry?

I think in this case, In Exile was referring to the fact that Anders doesn't mention his relationship with Karl to a female Hawke.

I can see the point; it contributes to the erasure of Anders' sexuality. Which is bad.

But I don't think it follows that Anders must be open about his sexual history to everyone. I don't think it's an inconsistency in his character, and I don't think his sexuality, or anyone else's, needs to be defined. Rather, people need to get over this obsession with labels.

Anders likes men and women. What that makes him isn't important.

Am i the only one that really miss the romances from BG2? I mean Aerie had my child on the field of battle, that was epic. I miss that last step in the romances, that takes them to marriage or children. I know it isn't fitting with the setting all the time, but i am a hopeless romantic.

Those romances were ****** terrible. Everytime I hear someone go "OMG BG2 romances were soooo much better than the modern BW ones!" I just do a double take. And I just finished BG2 last week so it's fresh in my mind. Jaheria with Carth Syndrome to the max, Viconia was a bitchier Morrigan without the saving grace of a really good friendship path and Aerie was a swooner ("Oh my wings!" And my PC's been tortured to goddamn amnesia status and gets his soul torn out. Cry me a damn river). And really does anything need to be expanded on Amoen?

Also Aerie oh god Aerie. I forced myself to drag her around to the end of TOB and really wish I hadn't. And in the underdark man. *rubs temples* Least she STFU once my PC asked her to.

I would be happy if BW never went back to that again.

I must admit I never played BG2 but the idea of my inquisitor bearing/siring and raising children makes me feel a bit squicky. Its not for me. I appreciate that a lot of people want to see the aftermath, and part of the 'happily ever after' but I would be very happy if that was left to headcanon.

I'm all about the chase. Once they've fallen in love with my character, their work there is done :D

For me. Yes.

BG is the only BW game where I actively wanted to set all the LIs on fire.

I agree on many of your points to be honest, the romances feel abit more flared up and drama for the sake of drama. I just like that they are abit more fullfilled at times. Ofc the romance with Alistair can end in marriage, romance with Morrigan can end in a child. You have the exceptions.

I found my romance with Sky more fulfilling than Amoedouchecanoes. (Yeah I *really* don't like that dude). So I guess it's a YMMV situation. Hard for me to enjoy a romance when I'm resisting the urge to turn my PC into the Slayer and eat them.

Praying Mantis romance?  :P

I actually liked the originals (well Jaheira not so much.  Dang, girl, take some time to mourn!)  But it does make me wonder about the BGEE romances.

Favourite Bioware romance then?

XD would've been a better love story than what I got!

Dorn's is...shallow but somehow still manages to be less aggravating to me but being a better romance than the originals isn't much of a feat for me :P

I haven't tried the other two.

Favourite Bioware romance then?

Toss up between Alistair and Fenris.

Well, (1) since we're talking about a female protagonist in this case, the flirt scene has a totally different meaning, but (2) I want you to help me save my lover is very different from a bit of a flirt, which you don't even have to get depending on your dialogue options (and in fact I never triggered until I picked out of character(s) options to see it).
