Garrus > Liara. That is all.

He was my bro, no other relationship (including romances) has felt more natural than the Shepard/Vakarian bromance imo. They tried with Varric/Hawk in DA2 but they were too distant and it came off feeling a little forced.

As far as DA:I i'm all about Cassandra, I've been intrigued by her ever since DA2. I'm also hoping for a bit of a bromance with Beardy McBeardsten, I think he and my Inquisitor will have a lot in common (and by that I just mean they will both have a beard.) They could talk about beard grooming!

I get that they're aliens. I get that it's a whole new world in ME... but Garrus reminded me of a grasshopper and I could find nothing sexy about that (no matter how my daughter tried to convince me ;) ) LOL *ducks and hides from the fangirls/guys*

As for Inquisition... from the pics I've seen, I'll probably end up with an elf. Not my preference but they've made the body shapes too thick from previous versions. Cullen used to be slender (looking anyway in that armor) and all the others... Look a bit like taller dwarves (in build) with heads that didn't quite catch up. LOL

...I've spent way too much time creating bishounen in poser. ^_^

Perfect example of 'different strokes'. I could not be happier that the vast majority of the guys are bulky. More to love, I always say!

Liara's arc was the only Mass Effect romance I liked. I generally prefer the Dragon Age romances.

Well, that's a valid criticism, and in fact, it's all throughout the DA series. The lore tells us that homosexuality is largely accepted, but Zevran acts like the Warden might stab him when he brings up his own same-sex experiences.

It also tells us that women are allowed to fight in the military in most countries, and are respected. Plus, there are several prominent female warriors in their dominant religion and folk stories, but if you actually play a woman, several characters act super-surprised that you aren't in a kitchen.

I think the writers wanted to create a progressive setting, but they struggle to actually realise the vision in practice.

Well, I'm not sure I'd call a setting that stabs and t-bags basic foundations of modern liberalism (demolishing the foundational belief of all people being created equal, vindicating the authoritarian security establishment of security versus freedom by having minority groups pose real and valid threats to the majority) a progressive setting, but point taken. There's a lot of writing for the audience in mind, and in the end the audience is us.

I once wondered what it would be like if a video came out with a truly unique and distinct culture with completely different cultural mores. I ended up believing that it would bomb with the public.

No clue, he just wasn't that interesting to me. In both ME1 and ME3, my team was always Me, Kaidan, and Liara/James. In ME2, I had a blast with Thane, Samara, Jack, and Miranda. I never really liked Tali or Garrus.

aww. Fair enough.

Garrus is overrated tbh.

D:

Felt Liara came across as overly forced upon player in me3. It damaged my appreciation of her as a character.

Very. From ME2 forwards she felt very forced. The whole giving Shep's body to Cerberus and keeping his busted armor in a case just made it worse.

Yeah, never quite understood the Liara hate. She was my Shep's best friend from ME1-ME3.

I didn't like Liara in ME1 because I was forced to mind meld or whatever with her so many times. You basically couldn't say no - which I don't consider the best strategy for plot development. But I was pretty much convinced all of ME1 that she was going to betray me, since they kept forcing me to trust her.

ME2...just felt out of character for her. I didn't buy that she went from a sweet archeologist type to badass Shadow Broker. Felt to me like she was just someone's favorite character so let's make her even more important and awesome.

And I just never had reason to use her in ME3...so I didn't.

From what I recall from the ME3 forum. part of the hate was caused by the different treatment compared to the other ME LI (she got a dlc), the fact that she was considered Mac Walters' favourite character, and the fact that her friendship with Shep is 'forced', even in cutscenes.
Though for what I recall Garrus and (expecially) Tali got their own fair share of hate, expecially after the annoucement of them being the only ME3 squadmates from the ME2 cast.

A lot of people were mad that content went to a character they didn't like instead of one they did. Instead of blaming stupidity like the suicide mission that forced these decisions they lash out at characters they resent.

It is funny when fans of Tali and Garrus who also enjoyed heavy favoritism (and in some ways were more favored than Liara) complain about how unfair things were with Liara.

Fans whining on forums is a universal constant.

Just like death and taxes.

Plus it is always like that.

"Hey dont be mad my fave character got a DLC you dont have to buy it or anything!"
Then if a character gets a DLC they dont like?
"OMG this DLC sucks I hate this toon! I hate this DLC! ARGH IT SUCKS!"

Fan myopia is always funny.

Nah I was fine with LOTSB. Just not fine with the forced buddy buddy act.

You can kill both of them if they annoy you and avoid the whole forced buddy buddy crap. (Hell you can completely skip Tali in ME2). Can't do that with Liara. You can't even avoid her in ME2 since before DLCS you had to recruit Thane or Samara. There's favoritism definitely but there's a sure fire way to avoid most of it you don't get that with Liara.

I hated Liara's ME3 forced friendship crap too...

Her and Shep was all supposed to be a couple and she was all...friend-zoning Shep at the beginning of ME3 for some reason ;)

Garrus is Shepard-lite. A Garrus/Shepard romance is like romancing a mirror.

Well at least Garrus could dance, so that has to be a plus in his column right?

I was a big fan of Liara, but each romance has it highlights. She was the one I picked the majority of the time in Me 1 and Me2. But I'll breirfly state why I liked some of the others, Jack, she was a ******, a bad ass, and took no crap from anyone. There was more to her than that a softer side and vunerable side that brought her to life and made for an interesting character.

Thane as another one that I liked in ME2, even with the dark foreboding of his Karpal syndrome, a man seeking to find peace with himself from his past action with currrent. I Approve.

Tali Tali Tali, I think with me it was more a fascination to see what was under her faceplate, the romance was fun, but it seemed more like the forbidden fruit type, once I had a bite it was okay as romances go never high on my replay list.

Miranda and Jacob, the stories and characters were fine but found the romances just meh.

Garrus, I liked the romance, did not come across as spectacular but it did have some good moments.

Let's not forget Samara our Justicar, although she is not set to the usual romance path you can pursue her (You'll be rewarded in Me3 if you got the citadel dlc) if you are the type that consider a romance culmination with knocking of the boots then this one is not for you, but it is worth following.

Heh let's not forget Kelly......She to ummm sweet, and I found myself mostly romancing her so someone would feed my fish lol.....I think I have blown 100k+ on dead fish replacements.....

Now to ME3

Now here I thought I would remain true to Liara everyone's favorite blue girl. But alas I was mistaken I was totally unprepared and swept off my feet by an upstart new to the series how dare they! By Traynor how dare she! (On ME3 fresh start playthroughs  I always found myself gyrating to her much to my utter dismay XD). I just like the personality and way her character comes across.

Coming in just behind our comm officer was Kaiden as m/m it struck another cord in me which I liked, and hey it's Kaider kind sweet and just the right amount of toughness.

Then there is Steve another good romance, only part I didn't like was it seeming like you were taking advantage of him on the rebound, I'd rather have been supportive of his loss than wooing him. He would have come ahead of Kaiden if it was not for that little part.

Garrus is overrated tbh.

I'm inclined to agree nowadays.  I'm not the Garrus fan I used to be...I still think he's a pretty cool character, and admittedly I was upset that he was only a straight LI...until I saw the nude Ken-dolled concept art of a turian...YUCK!  You can keep him all to yourselves, ladies.

Really, the only reason he became a LI was because of his massive popularity and his fangirls squealing en masse for a piece of his bony turian ass after the first ME.  Romancing him on my Femshep alt was pretty blasé.  I felt he worked better as just a bromance.

I mean I romanced Garrus and Liara, Liara seems...dull. Like I feel they really dropped the ball on her being the shadow broker in ME3 since most of your big news came from other people. She lacked a lot of oomph, and her final romance seemed pretty void of any characteristic. There was a lot they could do, but in 3 they seemed to default her back to who she was in Me3. She just seemed very very bland.

Garrus was kinda flat in Me1 and had more of a mentor relationship which was fun. In Me2 of course he became cooler and has tons to do with shep. In honesty we romanced them side by side and my gf got a laugh at their comparable effect. Liara was a passive romance to the max while Garrus was a active romance.

I had no issue with Liara, but I can understand that because she was a necessity to enter your brain in Me1, and other things, including if you romance a non crew member in some scenes she shows up instead. Including a Stevemancer my gf made. She can seem forced on the player. I like her, but no matter how cool they say she is, she shows herself to seem exceedingly...flat. She is one of the few romanceable to lesbians so I tried really really hard, but in the end I found her boring.

Agree. With distance i can see its all due to ME3's horrible attempt to define Shep and his relationships, which may work for new player but for ones importing from previous 2 games doesn't. My character's rarely dislike Liara but me as a player i'm fuming at her for the unwelcome latent melding of romance and friendship content. The relationship definition happens with other character's in ME3(i personally dislike new Anderson Shep paternal vibe) but its less frequent or more optional and doesn't carry the deeply intimate romance vibes. Really hope future DA/ME games avoid this defined approach and keep the degree of openness i favour in RPG's.

See I felt Liara was too romantic as a friend, and seemed more of a friend as a love intrest. It seems to skirt the edge.

I have noticed a somewhat trend in Bioware games.

Carth, Sky, Thane, all were male LIs that were in a previous relationship that produced children, in the case of Carth and Thane it was a son who turned to the dark side. Think that tradition may be continued?

Liara for my straight shep. She has been with him through and throughtill the end. I think that's beautiful.

Kaiden for my gay shep. Once again, been with him to the bitter end. Was never afraid to call him out (even if it was misguided) and had my back.

Isabella for straight hawke. I think it was beautiful to break her out of her shell. It was like she used sex as a defensive mechanism to conceal the loneliness she had inside.

Some might hate me for saying this but I liked the Anders gay romance. He was just so angry and I loved how my mage hawke kept him in check until of course he blew up the chantry. My hawke stood by him 100%
