I always wonder why people think Isabela was dark in DAO. I mean.. is it a video setting thing? Because she's obviously dark. About as dark as DAO allows it seems.

I separate the romance part from the story part, I barely spoil myself on the story part, but I want to know about the romance before going in. Romance is just a small part of the game, and there are a lot to discover with the gameplay and seeing how the story unfold. If I want to go into the game, not knowing who to romance, I wouldn't be here. The story can change depend on your actions, your LI can't, so it's better for me to know what to expect when it comes to LI, so I don't rise too much expectation when meeting them.

I want to know the romances upfront so I can build characters that can mesh well with the available options. I find a well suited romantic experience adds fantastically to my enjoyment of the story.
Given the sera news I doubt I'll ever build a male elf character for this reason.

I think I still could. He'd be evil though.

No one will know it was just sexual frustration.

Which means he could be an ash wraith. Not that I believe it, but it does fit what we know of him.

Mark just basically confirmed there won't be ninja-mances.

Frankly I've always viewed Mr. Gaider's attitude in this regard as being a touch arrogant. I can understand his frustration with some fans who do apparently want to know the entire game before hand, but some of Gaider's comments on the topic(not wanting to release any information regarding the companions or romances prior to release) to me sound as if he expects us to just buy the game with no real incentive and just take it for granted it's going to be good.

Just to play devil's advocate here... when you go to see a movie, do you go based off the trailer or do you have to know everything including who, if any, the protagonist romances? When you buy a book, do you have to read the whole plot online before hand or do you go based off the inside jacket and maybe word of mouth? I say this because to me these games are the same thing.  A story that needs to unfold and we shouldn't want to spoil the flow with knowing major aspects. You don't have to necessarily buy the game. You can rent it first, if you don't want to spend over 20 bucks, (average movie going experience and hardback book), without knowing the key points to make sure you feel it is worth the extra money. These are games meant to be played more than once. His attitude is far from arrogance. It is pride. Pride in a good story that he thinks is best served by being surprised. The incentive is you see the trailer, you say to yourself, "That looks like something I want to play", and you go get it. You really shouldn't need more incentive than that.

Those aren't retcons though. And as Mr. House said, Isabela was never pale.

They drastically changed the appearance of many characters, even considering the change of engine. Which I have nothing against, I was just pointing it out.

I remember her paler. I probably had a higher gamma in Origins. Still looks different.

She looks different, because it's a different art style and they decided to actually put some effort into her model in DA2, but in Origins she was still dark skinned; just the lighting in that scene made her look pale. I've seen screens of her model in regular light and she's fairly dark.

It was probably the light, yeah. What I meant was that the appearance of Cullen, Merrill and Isabela changed a lot from Origins to DA2, and most people consider their DA2 appearance the "correct" one and act like it had always been that way. I bet most people don't even remember what their faces looked like in DAO (well, I didn't ). They also changed many voices. Leliana and Anders are alive no matter what, and Anders leaves the wardens despite the epilogue slides in Awakening saying otherwise . Hence the "retcons" comment.

you act like changing Merrill and Isabelas voice was a bad thing, it was not. Also it's been confirmed it was lighting in DAO. Isabela has the darkest tone in DAO, confirmed by Chee, the writer of Isbaela and people who looked at the face with no lighting.

Also Cullen didn't look that different in DA2 and he had the same VA, the reason Anders did get a new VA was because they wanted to keep Greg for CUllen.

Well, whatever games are "to you", the fact is they're fundamentally different from movies and books by virtue of being interactive.

Romance isn't just "part of the story", it's a gameplay feature that we're expected to engage in. Do you buy a game without having any knowledge of what the combat will be like? Because that scenario seems more apt than the analogy you used.

And yes, it just so happens that, as a gay man who was drawn to BioWare by same-sex romances (and who recommended their games to his friends on that basis), I have a vested interest in finding out which specific male characters will have same-sex romance content.

A movie is seven bucks and two hours of my time. If the trailer lies to me, I've wasted the price of a fast food meal and an evening.

A book is twelve dollars. Time wise it's a much larger investment, but I can put that book down and not feel particularly cheated.

A video game is sixty dollars and fifty hours. That's a much more significant investment. So yes, I'm going to need more than a trailer to win me over.

I disagree with this contention largely because all media are interactive to some degree due to the nature of how somebody chooses to experience them, and how individuals approach them from different perspectives, with different contexts, and with different opinions. The difference between a game and a book/movie/sculpture/painting is one of degree, not "fundamental difference" - especially when you consider that almost all games don't incorporate player decisions into the plot in a meaningful way.

But this probably isn't the place for having that discussion, especially since I agree with you that I would prefer to know more about the romance plots before the game releases (although not so much that it would influence my purchasing decision).

About spoilers...the script leak of ME3 allowed me to find out some unpleasant things in a fairly safe way and I was still nauseous afterward. So yes, I'd prefer to know as much as I can beforehand.

I'm eager to know romances and what sexuality they have, but that's all really.  I don't want big details on anything - I'm trying to remain as spoiler-free plot wise as I possibly can this time around (media blackout when/if these are announced soon, I got more than I bargained for in the months leading to DA2 and ME3's releases  :( never again!)

I only want to know romances so I don't spend hours trying to woo one person who isn't available and have potentially missed my chance of wooing someone else.  I'm going to decide who to romance whilst I'm playing - whoever appeals to me (and my inquisitor) most.
