I thought Garrus had potential to be more conflicting with Shepard, but I'd agree he's a yes-man. I see the points of conflict with him more than with Varric. But they simply don't get into much of it.
Whether it's general tension about Turians, views on law enforcement, etc.. In ME3 it's just worse. He's basically hardcoded as my buddy.
Garrus' buddy-buddy relationship is being called bro while Liara's bestie is being called stalker. What do you think the line between the two is.

I don't know. I don't care for either. I was a Jack fan. And my story eventually sucked.
So whatever. Screw Mass Effect ![]()

I'm in something of a rut after learning about Sera's orientation. I still like Sera as a character, but the fact that she wasn't romancable by males shot down a major portion of my planned roleplaying as an male elf Inquisitor. It seems like it's impossible to have a straight, same-species relationship as a male elf. Sure, females get Zevran, but the males? Go human or go to the brothel. Sera seemed like a light in the darkness, but it was just a train.
"But Kimarous, you can romance her if you play female." Isn't this a hypocritical inversion of the whole "playersexual" argument? On the one hand, you assert that believable characters should have particular orientations and not be arbitrarily bisexual in order for cater to every player... but at the same time, you think the best solution for the player to change their intended sex to meet the orientation of an in-game character? If arbitrary bisexual NPCs is a bad idea, so to is making an arbitrarily lesbian Inquisitor.
I suppose it's for the best that they alerted us to this bombshell several months before release so the pro-Sera heteros (like myself) have time to get over it. As it stands today, right after learning about it, the other potential options aren't sounding particularly good. There's Cassandra, but she might turn out to be a ball-buster who can't be reasoned with. Vivienne might turn out to be a love interest, but the more and more I learn about her, the less and less I like her - she's a no-go. Only other option that seems possible is "Scribbles" and we know jack diddly about her.
The future feels bleak in the romance department. ![]()

Inquisitor's hand? They keep showing it throughout the trailer. I'm not sure if it will be bi or straight though.

It's a good thing thing I was a Kaidan fan then. lol
Citadel pretty much gives Jack and Miranda the missing screentime from ME2. At least you're not being screwed over as badly as Thane... or God forbid Jacob.
One of the things I don't want to happen in DA is to have your LI cheat or die on you without your input. I was a slap out of nowhere when it happens.

Keeping Shepard's busted armor in which he suffocated horribly and died in a display case.

You're right about Thane and Jacob.
It's a little more complicated than just LI though. There's an atmosphere (that I associate with Jack... and Aria as well) that's just missing from ME3 in general. The dark, neon lit world of crime and Omega.. and my badass renegade Spectre amidst all of it. I felt like a boy scout in ME3. And even Aria and Jack call me a boy scout. It's sad.
edit: I don't know if that makes sense. It's like going from Blade Runner to some.. Tom Cruise movie. Or something.

ME2, your group was a band of misfit while in ME3, you're either a Mary Sue (paragon) or a practical Mary Sue (renegade), so that would explain the atmosphere. Think about it, in ME2, your group is mostly criminals and thieves while in ME3, your group is composed of ALL professional soldiers and scientists. If you were in a biker's gang, your former friend would be surprised if they see you with a bunch of video games enthusiasts.

I'm playing ME2 right now, and she didn't have Shep's armor. She did keep Shep's dog tags. Shep recovers his/her old N7 helm when they go back to investigate the crash of the old Normandy.
What I think is the main issue is the level of dedication that Liara shows to get Shep back. She recovers their body, gives it to Cerebus and spent the better part of 2 years awaiting your return. In short, regardless of your relationship with her, she's the reason why ME2 can even happen. While it doesn't bother me personally, I can see why some players find that stalker-ish.
Edit: To tie this back into DA romances, someone asked if players would really want to be rejected if a companion isn't available. After playing ME2 and 3, I'd say yes. If you hit on Freddy Prince Jr. I mean Vega as a lady character, he stammers and stutters. It's a really cute way to be shut down as a fem Shep and I wouldn't mind seeing something that tasteful in Dragon Age games. In ME2, you can also hit on another character and she'll tell you that while she's flattered, she couldn't have a relationship with you. She takes the compliment and lets Shepard down easy.
Or the way Aveline pretty much ignores Hawke's hints until she's already in love with someone else.

I understand.
They can do what they want. It's their thing. I just think that the whole vibe they went for sucks. ME2 is best of the bunch, and I'll hold fond memories of it. They should've stuck where ME2 was going instead.
edit: It's funny.. my hate is based on how much I actually like what they're capable of.

Lair of the Shadow Broker during the exploring Liara's house scene. She does have Shep's armor and his/her dog tags. (NVM that if anyone should've been given the tags it's Anderson or Shep's mom if he/she is spacer).
The dialogue goes something like: *upon clicking on the display*
"It's my old armor..."
"I guess someone didn't like you too much either."

If they had built up Liara's and Shepard's friendship better in ME1, her behavior would be better perceived later.
It's the fact that you can treat her poorly or ignore her in ME1 that gets people. She doesn't have to be a close friend there. Then it comes out of nowhere later. They should've been more prepared for it.

Honestly, if I had to take some of the ME2 newcomers on the retrofitted Normandy, I'd only want Zaeed and Miranda. I would've been pretty annoyed if I had to remain with the ME2 team and lose the VS and Liara from the group entirely.I understand.

I didn't notice, but I've only played ME2 once and I haven't done Lair yet this session. I tend to play Pokemon with most my companions first (gotta catch 'em all) and get their loyalty missions done. I'll keep an eye out. Liara could have been saving them for Shep, which didn't bother me. That being said...

That's where the ME writing team went wrong. If they had built up the friendship better (like Garrus or Tali, both of whom I loved by the end of ME1,) it probably would have gone over better.
Come to think of it, that's part of what I'd enjoy from a romance in DA:I. I'd like someone that is my friend before the romance track starts. Sometimes, depending upon the romance, I feel like it jumps straight to the blatant flirting. While there is some characters that are just flirts in general (i.e Zev and Isabela,) it feels weird when most of the LIs act like that.

I'd rather it be like a Street Fighter game. Huge roster grid at the beginning. Pick your favorites. ![]()
But yeah.. that's a fantasy. So I'll just hate what became of the series. It's unfortunate, but I can't force myself to like something.

Yeah I tend to save Lair til post SM too. But yeah I'll stop debating Liara before this turns into a wall of text XD
Agreed though but I think that'll be avoided simply by DA having different protagonists each game. Even Varric isn't a forced friendship (even if you can't drop him).
Friends to loversmance would be nice.

I've said this before, but one of my favorite quotes about love comes from the author Mercedes Lackey.
"Being best friends is the only way to be lovers. Staying best friends is the only way to be married."
After almost 11 years with my husband and nearly 10 years of marriage, this is very true. My folks are hitting 37 years together and they agree with that quote.
I'd love to see this played out more in Dragon Age games. I think they could do it even without having the same protagonist every game.

We'd need marriage to be in the game first, and I don't mean epilogue stuff.

True just have the LI and PC get together near the end of the game. Morrigan's "have you ever thought about you and I?" if you were just friends with her to that point was sweet.

Doesn't work well when our protagonists keep throwing themselves on the altar like Jesus. Or going MIA. Or something equally uncommon.

That's at the end though and that's the least of my concerns. I don't care at this point what happens in the end, I want that journey to be with a friend turned lover. I know it's too late to give ideas for Inquisition, but it's not too early to offer suggestions for future games.

Not necessarily. If there isn't a solid friendship, a marriage will fall apart or turn loveless. I've seen it time and time again.
However, I would like sex to not be the reward for romance. I'd like the player to be able to turn down sex with a LI without ending the relationship. From some of your posts, I bet you feel the same.

Doesn't happen much before the end either. They don't know how to write down to earth stories. People with real lives. Everyone keeps getting swallowed up in "epic-ness" or duty.
DA2 gave me some hope.. I'm quite fond of Act 1 and 2.

YMMV on that one. I disagree wholeheartedly, and I felt a lot of the romances in the BW games so far have been pretty fleshed out. Some of the stories feel pretty down to earth in my eyes. I can see where you're coming from though and as I like to say, to each their own.
Still, it looks like we are both in agreement with some of the friendship and romance elements we'd like to see in the future.
