Not necessarily.  If there isn't a solid friendship, a marriage will fall apart or turn loveless.  I've seen it time and time again.

However, I would like sex to not be the reward for romance.  I'd like the player to be able to turn down sex with a LI without ending the relationship.  From some of your posts, I bet you feel the same.

I don't think we've ever really had a loveless or lack of friendship romance plot(excluding flings) though. Even Jacob seemed to care about Femshep in ME2. So we're safe on that I think.

And yes, I want at least one "no sex until marriage" LI that isn't also chaste.

But no, we can't have that.  <_<

I could see Liara and Leliana getting together and falling obsessively in love while taking over the galaxy from the shadows.

"I kept your molted head tentacles in a jar!"
"I kept the armor that ******* decapitated you in and gave it a little shrine!"

I wish I could like this multiple times.

I just used that as a reason why having marriage in the DA games wouldn't work for me.  It would seem odd if they rushed a friendship (or skipped it entirely) and went straight to love and romance.  I would personally find it immersion breaking, because I'd be going "Well, this isn't going to last long.  Barely friends and now they're talking marriage?"

I've been seeing you post for several months now and I do respect where you are coming from for sure.  That was just my opinion.

Eh, figure it like this: We can use this thread to offer up suggestions for future games.  I personally like the choice of a (good) chaste romance in the games.  The more choices that are feasible, the better.   :)

YMMV on that one.  I disagree wholeheartedly, and I felt a lot of the romances in the BW games so far have been pretty fleshed out.  Some of the stories feel pretty down to earth in my eyes.   I can see where you're coming from though and as I like to say, to each their own.

Still, it looks like we are both in agreement with some of the friendship and romance elements we'd like to see in the future.

I didn't say they weren't fleshed out. I'm just saying they're not leading to this sort of common/domestic bliss.

Leliana has a sweet romance in DAO, but look how she kind subtly of hints at death. Like her tale of the two lovers in the stars. Or how Morrigan leaves. Or Alistair becomes king. There's a bittersweetness about all of it.

The sad truth... and I hate her.. is that Wynne is right. You're just some ****** hero. And you and your loved ones will eventually be unhappy.

Uh.. btw.. sorry if I sounded jaded or cynical. I know what you're talking about with friendship. My parents have been together almost as long as yours. I think it's cool as hell. I'm proud of them.

I just don't think these games know how to reflect this kind of stuff. The writers get off on heavy handed "epic concepts" instead. Heroes throwing themselves at whole armies, sacrifice, duty. And fan tears.

I'm not sure how being friends with someone before you start dating them is "common/domestic bliss."  I also felt many of the stories were easy to relate to, but that's just me.  It was down-to-earth within the context of the setting, for my perspective.   I do understand why you see it a little differently.

Real life friendships and relationships can be bittersweet all the time, so I'm not sure what are you getting at.

No worries!  I think they know how to write like that, they just haven't done it yet to their full potential.  That is one of my concerns about having so many LIs: That the story aspects I can relate to are thrown aside for more romances.  From the scope of the upcoming game, I have some hope.

This would be interesting. I liked the option in Origins. I've always thought maybe my character doesn't feel like it at the moment, or thinks this is not a good time for it, or doesn't feel so certain about how the relationship is going, or whatever. At any rate, is a nice bit of roleplaying.

I find people like that to be funny IRL   Oh, don't get me wrong. It's a perfectly legitimate choice, and there's nothing wrong with it. I guess it just makes so little sense when I try to analyze it from my personal philosophy that it's just kind of cute.

1) Load up DA:O

2) Begin romance with Alistair

3) Gently tell him you're not ready yet when he asks if you want to get busy

4) profit?

Hell, if I remember right, you can tell Zevran you're not ready yet and he goes "okay then!" and the romance stays active and he doesn't push you any further on that point. I would be shocked if the same weren't true of Leliana and Morrigan.

Of course, I felt a strong friends-turned-lovers vibe with Alistair too, I held off on flicking that switch for a long time in a few of my playthroughs. Worked for me.

The problem is in the more recent offerings where you can't just chit chat as you feel like. So you get in a conversation and see a flirt option and are like "crap if I don't take this flirt now, will I close off the romance forever?" So you feel pressure to advance at THEIR pace instead of YOUR pace.

To be fair, it can get tiresome.  DA2 pushed that up to eleven, for good and for ill.

There are people who within a year of becoming friends did get married and stay such happily for the rest of their lives, so it does happen.

I just want one LI to have the same belief as me that one should wait until you are married before consummating that love with each other. But as you said that will seem rushed so they are all premarital sex options.

You never get married in the game. It's an Epilogue slide. May as well headcanon it.

I remember doing the same with Leliana in my first run, so it's definitely possible. You can even give several reasons for it, though I don't remember them right now. It's been a long time.

Methinks that you should replay Origins before October 7th.  :D

So your issue is more you want to get married than the no sex until then part? I'd think that is the least important part.

I'm curious why getting married is so important to you? I'm married and I really like it (which is good :P), but getting married in-game isn't that important to me. As long as I get a sense of "we have a future together" by the end, that's good enough.

edit: I should probably qualify that as "we have a future together, provided I don't die at the end or ~disappear~ because of reasons."

Not necessarily. Maybe I've been playing these games too long (since DAO's launch). I want to see something else.

It's gotten to the point that I just embrace the sadness though. I don't fight it. My canon warden was celibate and then sacrificed herself. She bought into Wynne's nonsense. lol.

I meant no offense, I assure you. I meant funny as in the sort of stuff you look at with an amused smirk (like the current object of my affections fawning at the sight of a cute puppy xD) rather than an actual laugh. So don't take it the wrong way  :D I genuinely respect your choice, even if I don't personally agree with it, because of reasons.

Seconded.  Plus, I think it could make for an interesting RP choice.

It is important in my real life, so I would like to see it represented since me and millions of others feel that way.  Kind of the same principle as people who are LGBT want to see LGTB representation.

I don't know. I guess I just see romantic relationships, or any kind of relationship for that matter, to be about the present, about living the day together, as opposed to having a future together. Carpe diem and all that. So I guess what you describe appeals to me personally.

Oh, okay. I'm used to people doing the latter kind so I jumped to conclusions. My apologies.

The only companion I can recall being available for marriage (Alistar) was also fine with putting off sex.

There isn't much "present" tense relationship stuff necessarily. It's mostly mission stuff/combat. Especially DA2. Romances were like little diversions there, icing on the cake. No equivalents to the DAO camp talks.

That said, I also don't care to invest too much emotion anymore. To be honest, I got pretty hooked on ME because of romance. Then it went nowhere. I hate that I invested anything in the first place. I feel stupid. Their overall message seems to be, "if you are going to invest emotions, make it about sadness, loss, and high minded ideals about sacrifice and duty." So I've taken that to heart. I don't think they really know where to carry their games anywhere else.

While I support your decision to have a "no sex until marriage" romance in the game, choosing to be celibate until marriage is not the same principle as being LGBT.  That being said, I do hope that they give you an option like this in the future though.
