Race restrictions make the gender restrictions more easy to swallow; either go hardcore on restrictions or no restrictions at all, but gender being somehow the only restriction was really, REALLY jarring.

Gender restrictions at least have the excuse of allowing for representation of different sexual orientations. There is no excuse for racial restrictions as it's a completely arbitrary block on players.

Race restrictions would make sense because ya know what?

MOST ROMANCES IN ANY BIOWARE GAME

No. Most romances in any Dragon Age game.

That's not saying much, we got 5 in DA2.

I highly doubt they're gonna race gate.

David Gaider said it in the post quoted above. You can check the Cassandra thread if you wish to see the original xD

Dwarf -> dwarf and qunari -> qunari is how I see it.

I suspect there will be no restrictions outside of that (i.e. elves and humans).

I could see Vivienne being Human-only, and Iron bull being pansexual.

As for Varric, didn't he shot down Hawke because he's into dwarves or something ?

I am OK with race restrictions, but in the same way that I'm OK with gender restrictions: it's only acceptable to me if everyone still gets a choice of love interest regardless of the race/gender combination they chose and whether their PC is gay or straight.

Like, just for example: say that Sera is a lesbian (well, we know that) and Scribbles is the only bisexual woman. If Sera also won't romance humans, suddenly all the human lesbian PCs only have one choice. That would suck.

On the other hand, if there are six romance options that are open to all races and a couple of others that are race-gated, I would be fine with that.

It does add replay in fact, it also means characters liek Varric might be a LI now. If you want to bang everything, go play the first witcher game.

If I don't want to play as a dwarf, I'm not going to replay the game as a dwarf just for the chance to f*ck Varric.

Would make alot of sense, and in Varrics case racial restriction is the only way we could ever romance him.

I rather Varric not be an LI honestly =/ but I'm one of those who preferred 4 all bi LIs and everyone else just have extensive friendship paths.

Dwarf -> dwarf and qunari -> qunari is how I see it.

I suspect there will be no restrictions outside of that (i.e. elves and humans).

Honestly I really prefer everyone get booted out one option. There shouldn't be a safe race where you get everyone save one option. (Especially since majority plays humans and restricting any race other than humans isn't anywhere near as bold a move).

True. Now we need choice restrictions.

Varric is only into dwarfs. If he's a LI it would have to be locked to dwarfs only. Some characters also might not want to have sex with other races. What you find arbitary, others don't.

Check the Cass thread.

I don't see anything from BioWare regarding race restrictions in the Cass thread, so what are you talking about?

All preferences are entirely arbitrary. They're nothing but the random result of the flow of hormones in the brain telling us what we do and don't find attractive.

SO because YOU don't, that means others won't? #logic

Race and gender restrictions?  What is this, 1996 again with Baldur's Gate?  Why have both?  That is just plan silly to me.  Having the gender restricted due to sexuality is one thing, but race as well?  Or if it was racially restricted, it has to be by gender too?  If this is trying to encourage replays, then it doesn't work for me.

That being said, I wouldn't take a "could be this way" comment as even strongly hinting at race restrictions at this point.  It's best to not assume anything unless directly told otherwise by the DA team.  No need to get upset over something DG might have been trying to hint at.

Just going to drop something Mr. Gaider said over in the Cassandra thread.

So, race gating all but confirmed.

... Huh.

That's... interesting?

Concerning but interesting?

I mean, will it even be that big of a problem? I mean, the only thing I could... MAYBE see this coming in would be Iron Bull, or Varric.

I mean, all the DA:O romances could be romanced regardless of race, animation could be a bit finicky but it wasn't impossible.

You can show that with non-Li people, heck Celene and Briala are expected to be seen in Inquisition, and they're quite the lesbians.

Again my favourite system is the no restrictions one, but if they go on the restrictions route, might as well go full speed ahead; I so hate half-assed descisions.

This:

Absolutely correct. If someone wants to complain about not getting something they would have liked, they're free to do so. If, however, they do so in a racist or blatantly sexist or homophobic manner, they'll be shown the door. And if they honestly think they're fomenting some kind of mass revolution, they'll undoubtedly be disappointed to discover just how much in the minority they actually are.

As for the "rage" regarding people discovering that a character on whom they'd already pinned their romantic hopes suddenly isn't available to them (either by way of gender or race, which are both possibilities in DAI) -- them's the breaks. One can either deal with their disappointment in an in-game manner (nothing like actually interacting with a character rather than thinking about them solely  in the abstract), they can play as a different PC (if romancing that one character is the most important thing to their game), or they can come to the forums and complain about how them not getting that option in the game is somehow a violation of their rights or part of a larger socio-political conspiracy. It won't get them anywhere, but so long as they do it politely and are considerate of other posters, they are certainly free to vent their frustrations.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the no restriction model is the best. I'm just saying that the gender restriction model has a viable argument for it.

The race restriction model is just limiting players based on what preferences the writers randomly decided these characters have for no reason.

Seems pretty insubstantial to get upset about at this point.  Life's too short to stress things like that and we'll get our answers soon enough in the coming months.

So, as far as I am concerned that is nowhere near confirmation, so everybody needs to calm down.
