Devs have been known to **** with us for pure yolo factor alone.
Until we get official confirmation, eh.
I've never played BG2. How 'bad' was it?
It´s like this:
Humans, elves, half-elves, and halflings can romance everybody (and this is the race restriction)
Then the gender is : Dorn (my picture btw)- Both, Rassad - female, Neera - males then there are 3 more for male, and 1 more for female players. yay...AKA dwarfes and gnomes wont get any love...lol

Agreed. I mean being a puppy kicker should cause good goody companions to dump you like a hot potato and saving kittens from trees should do that with puppy kicker comps.
I mean it makes the companions look ridiculous. "Well he's good to me and that's all that matters!"
Love makes people do stupid things. Though maybe that's what he meant by restrictions as well?
Like Alistair dumping you if made king and you not having a high enough persuasion?

Until it is reduced to the absurd, it's absurd?
Ignoring, of course, that every single aspect of every single Bioware character and romance option is inherently arbitrary. Why is Isabella a love interest? Arbitrary. Why does Morrigan prefer dudes? Arbitrary. Why is anyone interested in the player character? Arbitrary.
That's what I've been saying; all preferences are entirely arbitrary.

So... it shouldn't matter whether they exist or not?
Bioware's characters, Bioware's arbitrary decisions.

That's what I've been saying; all preferences are entirely arbitrary.
So we're agreed it's silly and hypocritical to condemn romance availability on the grounds of availability being arbitrary.
Good to know.

What's all the fuss? So far race and class restrictions had much bigger impact in DA universe, than gender. It's only logical that this would be finally represented in actual game, not just lore.

Meh I don't buy the love makes you do stupid things in this scenario as an excuse.
Though hopefully yeah that is what he meant.
He dumps you if he's not hardened and your persuade is too low I think but yeah stuff like that. Hopefully for all races and genders.
Nope. Solas only wants Femqunari.
Nope Solas longs after the strong muscular arms of a Qunari that's why he hooks up with IB if you don't. Trololol
Yeah, hopefully we won't be able to steamroll on NPCs without consequences, and not just romances; Alistair still holding my Warden as a model years after she basically planned his life for him was sort of pathetic.
Yeah that too.

Gender restrictions at least have the excuse of allowing for representation of different sexual orientations. There is no excuse for racial restrictions as it's a completely arbitrary block on players.
...people in the Dragon Age setting can't have racial preferences?
I mean, it was only yesterday one poster was blasting Sera for not making elven babies with his Dalish inquisitor for the preservation of the species. I'd imagine the reasonings of people in the DA setting itself could be far more varied than that.

They put so much effort into saying that they want the player to play how they want to play, but then IF they add this...i mean, why? just to "flesh" out the Companion characters?...:/

I'm saying that they shouldn't limit the player's options based off of arbitrary decisions. Those decisions should have a purpose behind them.
Gender gating can have a purpose; that purpose being representation for people of different orientation.
What purpose does race gating serve?

See I rather racial preferences happen with companions that aren't LIs (and the Lis be 4 all bi characters) but ah well. I'm not getting what I want *cheers*
Ah well. If I'm not able to make a attractive to me femQunari though...that'll be a deal breaker.

I wouldn't mind such restrictions because obviously people have diffirent tastes
But because we have only a few LIs as a rule, race restriction is just ineffective

Characterization. Maybe the fans won't care for it, but the fans don't make the characters.

A racial preference, at best, is just a random quirk of the character that doesn't give them any actual depth any more than what style hat they prefer.
The only way to give it depth beyond the random, meaningless "I prefer blue to green" quirk, is to make it an aspect of a prejudice or racism that a character has.

What purpose does race gating serve?
It could serve to enhance the lore.
Though I really rather they leave that to non LIs. It's not like we have a lot of LIs to begin with.

Characterization. Maybe the fans won't care for it, but the fans don't make the characters.
So now you can judge characters, not only for the sexuality but also for the race?...great...

Yourself.

Characterization. Maybe the fans won't care for it, but the fans don't make the characters.
Unless it's part of a certain racism or other prejudice on the part of the character, it has no more impact on their characterization than their preference for apples over oranges.

DA:I has race restrictions too?
I like the idea of this, but I can see it not happening. It'd be easier to make all races accessible for loving.
