Well, I was speaking for some of those who enjoy roleplaying different race/gender/sexuality combinations.
I forget that some people don't enjoy playing as anything other than a self insert.
Not wanting to play a different gender/sexuality than you own =/= self insert.
I can see it still being symmetrical in a way, but I'm with you on that. It might also hinder ninja romancing which can get confusing and muddle your current romance.

Yes, it will have some degree of...artificiality, that's unavoidable, but the former favourite "2 straight companions, 2 gay companions, 2 bi NPCs" really didn't even try.
Do you remember the Magistrate's son in DA2? He had a fetich with elves...
Let's not forget the loveable Vaughn from the City Elf origin. And the Viscounts son who had a Qunari lover.
Essentially what my concern is is that people who play qunari or dwarves or whatever are going to be stuck in a situation like gay and lesbian players were in DAO where they've only got one option. DAO was to them, "Don't like Zevran/Leliana? Well f*ck you, too bad! Have fun at the pearl!*evil laughter*".
So I'm hoping DAI isn't "Oh, you picked a qunari? Don't like Iron Bull? F*ck you, too bad. Have fun at the brothel."
Just using qunari as an example, here; I'm just hoping no one is restricted to the choice between one LI or the brothel.

It's far more likely that characters of the same race will be romanceable and the only restriction, if any, will be gender. It's what I'd expect all things considered.
See, that bothers me more than the "Viv(or whichever human) is only into elves" thing, because keeping it to the same race across the board is an out and out condemnation of interracial romances.
I'd more think it will discourage it.
Why? I will have no problems creating male and female characters of all races. For a $70 game replayability matters.
Except that there are only two elves and one of them is a female only romance. So when you layer those restrictions....

I just wish we got some jealousy thing going on, try and romance Morrigan and Liliana at the same time...best playthrough ever XD
Let's see, if there are both gender and race restriction yet there will more or less equal numbers (meaning 2/2/2 + for each race at least one LI for both genders, obviously)
We have four races: humans, elves, dwarves and qunari
2 het, 2 bi, 2 gay
At least one, human/elf/dwarf/qunari LI
Since we have only one dwarf and one qunari, it would mean that both Varric and Iron Bull are bisexual
Lots of humans, at least two human LIs, probably three of diffirent orientations
Two elves, Sera - lesbian, Solas then... bi?
So overall... 7 LIs
I still doubt they actually did it. At worst Iron Bull won't romance elves

Not always obviously, but there are LOTS of people who only enjoy playing as avatars of themselves. I never said it was a bad thing.

I don't know. The sexuality issue was different because people who play homosexual/bisexual protagonists are frequently people who enjoy doing so because they were born that way themselves. If they are limited it feels like they are being limited for who they are IRL. Same with female characters getting less options.
Choosing to play a Dwarf or Qunari is a choice that is entirely detached from reality, though. If they want more than one option then they choose another race, simple as.

I sincerely doubt Varric is an option. He's always been faithful to Bianca and I can't see that changing easily. Plus, you're never allowed dwarf LIs unless you go to a brothel. A proven fact.

Still, if they actually are going for more or less equal choices... then leaving poor dwarves without choice would be kinda unfair
I also play a human in every day, so it's nice to have a change of pace.
