Possibly. Our games aren't really intended to be played by way of "I'll pick the character I want to romance before the game even begins," but rather discovered organically. That said, we know there is a subset of fans who do want to do that, so it very well may happen. Whether it does or not isn't up to me, however. If it doesn't, I'm sure the information will be readily available after release, if that's what you really want to do.

With set sexualities and racial restrictions, it isn't quite as simple as "I'll pick the character that I want to romance before the game even begins" *for me* so much as it is "I'd like to know my options before entering chargen, so I do not create a character that I'd like to see a certain plot for -- only to get 50 hours into the game and realize there is no options/only one option."  For example, I plan on playing a Qunari Lady Mage first, but if she has 0 options or only IB as an option, then I would need to rethink my character choice -- and it'd be better to rethink the choice before ever setting foot in the game versus needing to start over after playing a third or a half or even the whole game.

I'm fairly sure the person he was replying to referred to characters as pieces of clay.

I don't think blow up dolls is a large difference.

Same **** different smell.

Either way it's a **BLEEP!** metaphor.

I'll believe that when we get Lis dumping PCs over choices the PC can make that don't evolve around being mean to them in specific.

Until then...

Well... They did have Alistair.. That went over well... Can you imagine the uproar if they created another character that dumped our asses?

If Realism is not a good term...whats a better term?

Oh and I am sorry if I offended. I just think its great that all the companions won't instantly want my inquisitors. I have no issues being rejected. :)

Just say you think it's better.

I think it's better if Fenris doesn't fall in love with a blood mage because it undermines his character. Likewise, some of the renegade options you get with Liara are ugly, and the fact that she still falls in love with you makes her look like she lacks self-confidence or self-respect. This doesn't work because while ME 1 Liara is socially awkward and inexperienced, she is still supposed to be an intelligent, capable woman who values herself and her work.

Yet you could argue that both of these are realistic. People in the real world, even healthy and intelligent people, find themselves in relationships that are unhealthy or with people they should be adverse to.

Characters aren't generic 'people' though. They're a set of specific traits, and having them act a specific way that's contrary to those traits (especially when nothing in the story acknowledges that contradiction) usually indicates a weak spot in the writing.

I believe artists are under at least a small amout of obligations to their patrons.

And if we were their patrons, that'd be true.

We are not. We are their customers, and that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

Knowing who I can and cannot romance is basically the only thing I like to be spoiled with concerning the game's story.

I'm not alone in this, so hopefully whoever decides on this info's release gets to read this.

Agree I want to know if romance. It's akin to wanting to know if I've got a chance for my character to participate in the story IMO.
Romance may not be core part of plot but for me most great stories have the human thread weaves within them and that makes them more impactful.

I think, in the case of Iron Bull at least, if he is restricted to qunari it's probably for safety reasons tbh. Would you kick him for that?

That's not a reason to restrict the relationship, though. The man has fingers.

everyone arguing is depressing but this interaction is perfect

"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

Calling characters clay and calling them blow-up dolls is not the same.

I was referring to the idea that the characters are sculpted through writing in much the same way someone creates art through clay.

Its malleable.

Not that i wanted a sex doll. But i feel like you knew that already, and decided to ignore it.

Doesn't exactly mean you should just disregard the new ones straight up because you want your sexy time with Morrigan because you think she'll make a good lover.

I didn't say I'd disregard them.  I play as multiple races and multiple genders.  It's particularly for this reason that I'm miffed.  I also really enjoy the romance mechanic, in and of itself, regardless of who the romances are.  So if a whole race - say Qunari or dwarf have no romances available because "sorry, the animations are too hard" I get sincerely annoyed.  I don't care *who* is available.  I do care that some combinations will potentially have *nothing* available.  I don't want to *have* to play as a human and elf over and over to get the romances.  I want to play as *many* races.

To an extent, I think these people (I'm not one of them!) are primarily worried about unforeseen restrictions that they may face well into their first playthroughs. For example, if I've decided to romance, say, Dorian as Lady Inquisitor and then find out that he's only available to male PCs after the fact, then I could see how that would be a bummer to me. So while I agree that it's a good idea to keep certain things in check pre-release, information like this is clearly more vital to some people than you would expect.

But regardless, you're right in that it probably will be readily available as soon as the game is out (or even a few days prior) anyway.

Dude. Really? Blow up dolls? Wanting there to be no racial restrictions hardly deserved that type of commentary.

I'm sorry but I think it is entirely justified. This whole discussion to me, is based on an entirely selfish self-entitlement of some players, who think they should be able to have their own imagined perfect playthrough, before we even know 10% of the game.

Yes, it sucks not to be able to get the romance you wanted (Oh Sera :( ). But to want to sacrifice character quality and integrity just so that you can get to "woohoo in bed" with that particular character, is something that irks me.

Why don't we settle on calling them Claydols?

Artists with no patrons (audience) aren't artists.  They are wannebe artists.  Art is a process.  It's not property.

The dude didn't say sex dolls, I did, as a joke.

A blow up doll could in the same way, be figuratively be blown up by writing.

No. Because these characters AREN'T REAL, and are ultimately clay to be sculpted by the writers.

Well.. I just got done watching a documentary on surviving religious cults, where people willingly gave their own kids to sex abusers and beatings.

So.. yeah.. anything's "realistic".

But do we really want that here?
