Actually, you have this backwards. Commercial artists have more obligation to their audience, not less. They are specifically producing art for their patrons to consume and enjoy. Non commercial artists are often just making statements and they may *want* people to be shocked or uncomfortable with what they produce.

We are not their patrons, we did not commission the art. A patron, in the ancient Roman world, was someone who took care of a commoner (represented them in the Senate, helped them out with debt, etc.) in exchange for services rendered. Such as being said patron's merchant. This evolved in the artistic world to mean someone who commissioned the art. The Church, for example was a major patron of the arts.
We are customers. We buy on speculation. We do not know what we are going to get in a particular movie/game/book/whatever, until we actually buy it. EA could be said to be BW's patrons, given that they own BW and commission their work (albiet, they do it on speculation of a wider mass market), but we are not and can never be.
Unless one of us becomes disgustinly rich and buys BW out.
