I'll say what I said at the beginning of this conversation.  I am 100% okay with a particular NPC having specific preferences.  I am not okay with PC Qunari or dwarves having 0 romance options due to animation implementation issues.

I doubt any type of character will have zero options. You might get stuck with one though.

And if you want to play as a straight male qunari?

Who exactly do they get if things are restricted by race?

hmmm...Cassandra perhaps?..i dunno

Or thinking, "Man, I should have just stayed in bed." We do have a nasty tendency of taking words like, "probably," "possibly" or "what I would prefer" as Word of God. With the whole racial gating thing, I'm not going to believe it unless DG (or another member of the DA team) says so with no room for doubt. None of this "maybe" stuff, it's going to be a yes or a no. I hope for an answer soon, as I'd rather not wait until I play the game to find that out. That would be a bit of a bad shock.

I'm taking this approach now.

Until someone gives me a flat out yes, I am assuming racial gating is NOT a thing. :/

I'd say it's better to keep in mind that race restrictions might be in. Just to avoid disappointment later.

I definitely get how it could be jumping the gun, but I truly believe there will be some racial restriction. I don't believe he would've hinted at it if it wasn't going to happen. But again, this is just my opinion.

It wouldn't be the first time. BG2 for as much as people love the romances was actually pretty restrictive. That's not to say I think it will happen again, just that really, anything is possible.

Guys, David Gaider actually answered the question unambiguously.

At the moment i just want to know if some races will be restricted to fewer (or perhaps even none, in a worst case scenario) options than others. Particuarly since gender gating is already in place.

Yes. There is no guarantee that a particular gender/race combination will have as many romantic prospects as another.

And that's fine. Romance options are not candy to be dispensed fairly and evenly, and if there's a particular character that you've decided before the game is released that you must romance, it's advisable you play a different PC. The most we can do (and have done) is ensure that there's no overall slanting towards a particular group-- it's all over the map, for various reasons.

There are race restrictions in the game.

At least two separate regions have each been described as being larger than all of DAO combined. I can't help but feel that by trimming down those regions just a tad - so little that people wouldn't even notice - that we could have used the development resources to keep the romance department to at least DAO levels - where every given racial/gender combination has at LEAST two romantic options available to them. At the rate things are going, I don't think we'll even get that.

Seems a waste of resources to me. Not having your pick of the litter as far as romance goes sucks. But I'll spend probably 2 hours at most on my romantic sidequest, but at least 10 hours exploring the in game world. I'd rather the portion of the game I spend the most time on be the portion that gets the most attention.

One is fine.  This was just the name of the game for anybody but straight dudes for years anyway.  I got used to it.  However, I don't want them to offer multi race play, only to gut two of the races' content due to animations.  (And then probably use metrics showing most people chose a human or elf to justify only having elves and humans in the future).  Probably a bit on the conspiracy theory side of things, but it's where my line of thought goes.

More then a shock imo...

<snip>

I stand by what I said.  It'll be a total shock for me.  It would seem incredibly regressive, and also, out of place.  A PC's race was never a point of contention in the games, other than marrying Alistair if he becomes king. The only reason why then it comes up is because he knows he can only marry another noble, and that the humans might not accept a dwarf/elf Warden ruler.  However, race was a non-issue prior to that point.

I can live with the return of set sexuality like Origins had, but suddenly being told that my race might not good enough as well would probably be just too much.

I was exaggerating, obviously. That would suck if you were forced into an orientation just for race choice and I really hope they don't and pray to God they don't do that.

True but BG2 was another time really (also if females are stuck with one male option welp...) So I think they'd at least give everyone 1 option. Even if one of those options are shared for most people.

I'm guessing a race restricted romance will be based on the companion's ideals and not just be randomly restricted. Like say Sera has been severely oppressed by humans and wont romance a human for example. (just like Fenris shouldn't have been romanceable as a made and Anders shouldn't have been romanceable by a mage hating Templar)

You understand that "race restricted" does not mean that a Qunari can ONLY romance  a Qunari, yes?

It just means that Varric for instance doesn't find Qunari attractive, and therefore the Qunari player would be restricted to any of the other party members.

Cool, then he can make a public announcement about it like with the gender gating.  Not some random post from another thread, but I'd like it to be officially announced.   On his blog, on the homepage for Dragon Age, or an interview.  Otherwise, I won't believe it.  I refuse to believe the DA Team slid all the way back to 1996 (only now with LGBT characters, so there's some progress) by adding racial gating.

You also have to bear in mind that BG2 had more races and fewer romances so restrictions were always going to be "more" restrictive so to speak.  I don't see any particular reason why every PC race shouldn't have at least 1 option.

Why are you even in the Romance thread if you don´t want to talk about romance in the game? :/

To be fair the metrics already say that :( so that's just them using their resources to please the largest audience possible. It's also part of the reason I really doubt humans being as restricted as everyone else.
