They could also make it like Fenris, who also flirts with you, but you can give an neutral response and that was that. In fact, I don't think I ever saw someone make this kind of complaint about Fenris the same way they did about Anders. i for one did not care that another guy flirted with me, but it was about the fact that I was forced into an awkward situation just for being nice.

The lack of more diverse responses IS a very valid concern.

That Anders (or any other character) may feel miffed (regardless of the response) isn't something that really bothers me all that much though.

I've gotten hit on and disapproval from Anders after rejecting him without ever touching the flirt option.

So Anders took it strongly and was maybe a bit sensitive about it?  The rivalry is where I really struggle to empathize.  For me it's "So? The character responded in a particular way.  It happens sometimes."

The comic refers to spontaneous sex with Anders.  The comic in and of itself doesn't bother me (I laughed), but it's not really reflective of how the game is.  If you end up having sex with Anders, you made a couple of explicit decisions to make that happen.

I'm just sick of it being used to show how one flirt means that Hawke just slept with Anders.  That's my main issue with it.

That's fair.  My post wasn't so much directed to you specifically.  I do believe that most people overstate it and anyone using the comic to illustrate the game is being disingenuous.  I won't dispute there's other problematic elements as well.

There are people that have espoused all the reasons you listed.  The timing of it plays into effect as well.  But the most common thing I come across is the rivalry.  There may be other aggravating circumstances, but many do seem to be upset that the feel "you have to be gay in order to be his friends."  When the reality is the insistence of "any rivalry points means I'm doing it wrong" is overstated, easily recoverable from, and utterly inconsequential in the long term of the game.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it doesn't bother me at all that Anders hits on you, or even that rivalry happens when you turn him down.

It's just that I've seen it claimed that the scenario where you either accept his advances or he disapproves only happens if you initiate flirting, which is blatantly not true.

Hmmm, I think you misread.  He only disapproves if you've been taking the diplomatic approach with him thus far, not ostensibly flirting.  He definitely will give disapproval if you haven't flirted yet.  Just not in all cases.

It's been sooooooooo long for me, so I'll have to defer to someone else for the details :S

Whoops. I pulled it from Rinji's Tumblr, where she must have reblogged it from Psdo.

Yeah that is most likely the case. I can understand the mistake, :)

Putting this here as it's romance related.  Just a general note to please not taunt people because they are not able to romance a character they were looking forward to romancing (whatever that reason may be).

Thanks!

No no no, i dont think you understand why the new system is so perfect. Let me explain.

Remember how in Dragon Age 2, there was a character you liked, and could romance them regardless of what gender you were with no impact on the actual romance quality at all? Everyone wins right?

Well, see, now with this new system, some characters will be locked off to you for arbitrary reasons. Now only some people win.

Its really quite revolutionary.

I'm pretty sure I've already explained why this isn't the way things are to you in a different thread.

While I can understand your disappointment, posts like this are not acceptable.

Can I taunt people that they can't use Bianca?

I'm going to go with a no taunting policy.

I hope you don't play as a tank in any MMO, Allan.

I just abuse my power.  I'm allowed to taunt at my will.  No one else is.

An addendum to this.  By extension, this also means do not attack other people who happen to be happy because a romance option they are looking forward to exists.

Taunts can happen on both sides and I'd prefer to keep the discussions from derailing.

Hey Allan,  i have a question, there is going to be npc to romance for male straight? Because with let down of sera being lesbian the option for male are very narrow

Representation was a goal, as well as options.

Straight males will still have characters that they can romance.

Huh. Based on what? Did I miss something wrt to how many romances there are going to be in the game? Because from the information I gathered they said it's going to have the most romances in a Dragon Age game which means more than five, but if they've put restrictions on that I missed that.

To be fair, Hiro did state it was a "guess."

@TheodoricFriede

People get emotional, and it's clear a lot of people really like our games and the romance content is a part of that.  I appreciate your comments and hopefully your impressions of the other characters can be challenged in a positive way and make you go "hey this person's pretty awesome too."

Cheers.

It is what it is. The game's not going to change. So what you can do instead is make the best out of it. And one of the ways to do that is to see it as an adventure in perspectives. I prefer playing a female inquisitor, too. But if I have to play a male one to romance Cassandra I'm going to give it a try, because why the heck not.

As someone that typically (i.e. almost universally) plays a man in games with character creation, a lot of the conversations I have had over the past few months have made me muuuuuuuuuuch more open to challenging my established history.

I should like, do a lets play of one of the other DA games as a woman just because :P

Does non-human straight males(and females) Inquisitors will have non-humans characters to romance? elf? dwarf? Kossith/Qunari?

Not my place to share more specific details than what I already have.  Sorry.

So Allan, can you give us a hint on when the other LIs will be announced, or if they will be at all? Please.

I do not know.  I suspect they will, since some have already been released.  If not *ALL* of them, I'd wager most of them (like maybe at least one for each representation).  But I'm just guessing, I don't know for certain.

At the moment i just want to know if some races will be restricted to fewer (or perhaps even none, in a worst case scenario) options than others. Particuarly since gender gating is already in place.

Yes. There is no guarantee that a particular gender/race combination will have as many romantic prospects as another.

And that's fine. Romance options are not candy to be dispensed fairly and evenly, and if there's a particular character that you've decided before the game is released that you must romance, it's advisable you play a different PC. The most we can do (and have done) is ensure that there's no overall slanting towards a particular group-- it's all over the map, for various reasons.

More that I don't actively go looking for it and they don't openly share it with people. (I understand your comment was more in jest, but just wanted to make sure it was clear)

I dislike many kinds of arguments myself. It doesn't make them any less valid however.

I consider the realism argument to be invalid.

It's cherry picking and makes me angry when I see it because it's always applied arbitrarily.  "This thing that I support is realistic.  While this thing I cannot be bothered with is unrealistic."

With respect to romance content there's already a whole heck of a lot of things that aren't realistic due to the realities of it being a video game.

Or you could, y'know.. practice what you preach, and not be so intolerant of those you deem to be intolerant.

I consider myself to be a tolerant person.  But I don't feel that means that I should be tolerant towards those that I feel are intolerant, nor do I think that this makes me a hypocrite.

We're heading down a tangent here that's going to make me prone to removing posts and/or closing the thread though.  Lets stop.

So, then, the bolded can only happen if you guys tell us who all the LI's are and what flavor of Inquisitor can and cannot romance them before release day.

Possibly. Our games aren't really intended to be played by way of "I'll pick the character I want to romance before the game even begins," but rather discovered organically. That said, we know there is a subset of fans who do want to do that, so it very well may happen. Whether it does or not isn't up to me, however. If it doesn't, I'm sure the information will be readily available after release, if that's what you really want to do.
