You could only romance Thane, Garrus, Miranda, Jack, and Tali if you had an imported romance. (And Kelly and Samara and Jacob, but I'm not counting those.)

Wow, yeah...totally forgot that. Which is embarrassing given how many times I've played the game haha. Thank you!

All i care about is the existence of choice per orientation in companion romances and all 3 being romances is the only way that can exist now. NPC romances aren't equivalent or an ok substitute to me as experiencing adventure alongside LI has always been fundamental to the romances.

I understand wanting choices certainly. I just feel like having a 6: 3 gender split and then making all the women romance options, regardless of what gender Inquisitor they are available to could be interpreted as a bit objectifying. Its late and its certainly possible thats an overreaction, but my initial/gut reaction to this idea is more 'wow thats uncomfortable' then 'yay more choices for me'. (personally). :)

Yeah agreed.

It reminds me of how in SWTOR if you had a female companion she was virtually guaranteed to be the LI. Just bleh.

There seems to be quite the laser-like focus on party members. [...] Gender diversity is also considered, but when we look at it in terms of representation, we look at it in terms of representation across the entire story—not just in the party.

Based on this approach to the gender imbalance among companions I assume they wouldn't count NPC LIs as inferior.

What Bioware counts and what the players count are sometimes not the same thing. That's not helped by the fact that fans can only base their expectations on how it was done in past games, which is of dubious relevance if Bioware changes the formula...but sadly there's no much more to build expectations on.

My friend really wants to be able to romance Varric. If he isn't a romance, I suggested she make a beefy male Qunari and call him Bianca. Hopefully that is the secret combination needed to unlock a Varric romance or something ;P   either way it will be funny

She's a pain in the ass =) I bet my Inquee will be in constant confrontation with her and Cassandra, really.

Meh, we don't even know her and she's a pain in the ass?

Just... what. Because she's sassy and takes no **** from anyone?

If the companions start hooking up with each other/npc's if we don't romance them, I'm hoping there might be a little variety to it depending on how the game has played out.

I rather would have romanced a fellow soldier than my chauffeur or my personal assistent. From what I've read it seems to me most people would prefer a companion over a non-party member, but I'm not sure Bioware feels the same way. David Gaider said that people focus too much on the party. If the devs don't consider the party important enough to have some sort of gender balance, then maybe they don't consider party LI more important than NPC LI either.

No, because from what we already know about her, she is power-hungry, arrogant and respects nobody. She doesn't care one bit about the mages who want to be free, she just wants the ability to control people around her.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions here, but I feel like I won't get along with her.

I don't know, all of this seem waayy too much, from the bit we know.

Besides, if she's like that then it would be even more interesting if she was a romance. Defrosting an ice queen is a trope i quite like (when it's not about straight girls).

To be honest, I definitely pre-judge a little by what faction a character is obviously with. I know which factions I'm going to support. It becomes pretty obvious which characters just are not going to be on board with my choices. I mean, I'm still going to explore their dialog and everything, either way. I'm not the "MURDER KNIFE THE DISSENTERS" type. But I know which characters are just obviously not going to be my LI or BFF based on their faction representation being the opposite of who I'm tossing my support behind.

I couldn't say better. That is, obviously, my point about not wishing to romance or make friends with certain characters.

I've been pretty negative towards Vivienne, myself.

They've released quite a bit of information on her, to the point where we know more about her than any companion except Varric and Cassandra. This information is, presumably, meant to give us an idea of the character, get us interested, entice us, make us want to learn more about her.

The thing is, though, that if you have enough information to like the character, as many on these boards do, then you have enough information to dislike the character. Everything we've heard about Vivienne makes me dislike her, I can say that much. Though I'm also the first to admit that the game may prove me wrong; going just by what we know now, I want as little to do with her as possible.

That being said, I don't think she's an unviable option for a LI. I'm waiting to see on that.

For me its the difference of the bond between a character i spend 40+ hours with side by side versus one that i spend 30 mins with.

David fully admitted it was understandable that there was a laser like focus on party members as they are the people who we spend a great deal of time with. So i can't see how could see an NPC romance as a like for like with a companion one.

That makes sense. Even if I don't like characters like Viv, Cullen or Cass doesn't mean that I won't give them a chance to prove me wrong ;) And if I've been mistaken, then it's no big deal if they tag along. Maybe I'll even be friends with them.

I've been wrong before.

I remember my very first impressions of Varric were rather negative(back when Cassandra had white hair), though those had eased up considerably by the time the game released.

I was also very positive about Aveline, but she ended up at a the far bottom of my list of DA companions. So that goes both ways.

Right now, Viv actually seems more likely to grow on me than Cassandra. Viv seems witty, if nothing else. I think I'll enjoy hearing what she says, even if I disagree with it. She also seems flexible, if she can see a situation from an angle that it benefits her. Cassandra, on the other hand, I see that relationship turning toxic.

I cannot think of a single female companion in a BioWare game that I wouldn't pursue and enjoy a romance with.

Reading threads like this feel like going to a buffet with a group of friends who will only eat from the salad bar.

I'm not saying you're wrong - the heart wants what the heart wants - but it always makes me a bit sad. There are so many different and wonderful thing available! How could you not love them all?

Funny thing is that the salad bar is the only part of the buffet that I never touch.

I like variety, but Vivienne is the first option I've seen where I just want nothing to do with her. She just comes off as a caustic person, and I'm not going to select the hydrocloric acid at the buffet, either.

When I was young, my mother would take me to a local organic food store in Portland and order sushi. At the end of the meal, I would take the entire glob of wasabi and stick it into my mouth and just hold it on my tongue. My nose would run, my eyes would water, and my head would sweat, but I always enjoyed myself.

What I mean is that if Vivienne is wasabi, I'd be more than happy to eat her.

But right now it looks like they're having NPC LIs anyway. Cullen is a confirmed LI and a lot of people think he might be an NPC.
