I know it may be a pretty minor thing to some, but what bugged me in DA2 was that elves had a chronic lack of shoes.... If someone knows why this is, as in, supported by the lore, then please let me know. But are we going to give elves their shoes back? (please?) Now, maybe it would make sense for the Dalish to be barefoot to be "in tune with nature", and maybe the City Elves are just too poor to afford such basic attire. But whatever the decision, it should be somehow noted in the games, so that we are not just left staring at those bare, little feet going "WTF?". I couldn't care less what the Dalish want to do with their bodies and lives, but please, at least don't make the City elves look so ridiculous (again) xD  I personally don't see a connection between bare feet and being in harmony with nature, or the world, or whatever. Poverty? That actually would make much, much more sense. Pleaaase, Bioware, give us our shoes back! :D

Love y'all

Agreed. I think it was supposed to be a way to make elves distinct from humans, but it seemed silly to me. I would like my inquisitor to have nice sturdy boots at least. There was a passing reference to some of the Dalish elves going barefoot in "The Masked Empire". The way it was phrased in the book made it sound more like an individual choice. I am hoping that this means the issue will be "hand waved" away with the excuse of poverty or variation among Dalish clans.

I personally liked the no shoes. I just wish that everyone has a choice in DAI, people that want shoes should be able to wear them and people that dont should be able to go barefoot.

Did you just like them aesthetically, or you thought it was a good decision in terms of lore? Going barefoot that is?

Both really , but  it only makes sense (to me) for the Dalish. City elves should be by now conformed to human society and be wearing shoes lore wise ( If they can afford them)

I saw at least one elf in DA2 who wore shoes, I think it was Lia's dad- one of the city elves at any rate, so there's that.

I don't agree with the whole no shoes thing myself, especially with Fenris. What if you stub your tow in a melee? It may not sound like much but that can seriously mess with your fight.

Didn't bother me at all. In fact, I never really look at the feet of anyone in this game at all.

Shame on you all for your foot fetishes. /s

In all seriousness I'm fine with no shoes. If any of you have ever lived out in the country you might understand. While barefoot isn't always a good idea, your feet toughen up with use cans can even be more comfortable. Although in a city filled with broken glass it would probably be dangerous.

Still elves be elves.

I'm definitely fine with the Dalish not wearing shoes, but they almost make it a pan-elven feature, which is kind of silly. City elves are human scum with pointy ears, don't make them seem more "mystical" or interesting by removing their shoes :P

Since there are cultures where shoes aren't part of normal attire, I can entirely see the Dalish doing so, provided their environment allows it.  In the city, I'd imagine humans would just force them to wear shoes because to humans, they would find it dirty (e.g., your servant walking into your nice Orlesian mansion with filthy feet), and I'd not think humans would be so kind enough to provide foot washes for the 2nd-class citizens before they enter their dwellings.  I'd imagine in non-normal settings, an elf ought to have footwear.  In battle, it's very easy to chop off an unarmored foot.  Also, if you're hiking up a mountain, walking on ice, rocks, lava, etc., unless they have super-hardy impregnable feet, they'd need some protection.  My mind always goes to the LOTR hobbits when they hike up the Misty Mountain during the snowstorm.  Like seriously?

Yeah, but the thing is - it should be something established through the NPCs, because ultimately the NPCs show what the world is like. If all the squandering city elves wear no shoes then it is implied it is out of choice, a cultural feature. Maybe it makes them feel closer to nature, or gives them a sense of freedom, or is a sign of poor hygiene habits. If the Dalish suddenly start claiming their great-ancestors walked bare foot (aka the ancient elves did not have shoes), I would just bang my head on the keyboard until I fall unconscious xD But jokes aside, it's not only an aesthetic choice for PC characters, but offers a hint of a particular cultural practice, or some sort of a physical need to feel the earth or whatever. Either way I don't think it provides depth or diversity to the game, just makes the elves look silly IMO. Nevertheless, it does look good on some Dalish elves, makes them look wild. But then again, I never play Dalish so I'm mainly concerned with their "unenlightened" city and circle magi cousins.

Aesthetically they fit, lore wise they fit, and in a realistic sense they fit. Unless someone doesnt like feet, i see no problem with keeping Dalish barefoot.

Last time I played DA II I think I counted eight elves wearing shoes in the Dalish camp and six not wearing any. Something similar in muber in Kirkwall too I think. All elves in the game weren't without shoes, even if the two most important ones were.

In that case they should just clarify in the game - make a short dialogue, or a codex, or whatever. Simply ask a random elf "Why are you barefoot?" and let him explain A, B, C etc. If they want it to be a cultural peculiarity of a sort they need to provide a bit of context, since it's hard to definitely conclude "well THAT'S why they do it". Maybe it's supposed to help Dalish hunters come in tune with the natural forces and "feel" where their prey is moving. Maybe it's related to Andruil and hunter traditions. I don't believe all elves are intrinsically tree-hugging hippies. They are a magical people, perhaps, more weaned on magic than any other race, but I don't think they are necessarily weaned on "nature". With that logic the Dwarves should be squirming naked on the ground like worms to be constantly in touch with the Stone, with every inch of their body. Nature is not just in the "ground", it is in the songs of the birds, in the rushing streams, the open sky, the beautiful rose, the gentle wind, the brilliant sun. Not in some dirt. As long as it is coherent, easily identifiable and logical within the world, they can make as many shoeless elves as they like.

Ultimately it's a question of tying such "small" details and art decisions into the larger scope of the lore. That sort of practice, obviously, applies to any cultural peculiarity about any of the races - it should be elaborated on, explained and given context, then people wouldn't argue over this and that and accept lore as lore.

Aesthetically they fit, lore wise they fit, and in a realistic sense they fit. Unless someone doesnt like feet, i see no problem with keeping Dalish barefoot.

How do they fit lore-wise? Don't know of any piece of lore that brushes over this. And yes, not all of us like feet :P   Showing feet off is a bit... barbaric :D

I did not see anything in either game that suggested the elves were "in tune" with nature. Like, okay, so they live in the woods. That doesn't mean they sing with all the voices of the mountain and paint with all the colours of the wind.

And yes, they should absolutely wear shoes. All practical reasons aside, feet just creep me right the **** out. Cover that **** up.

LOL, I totally get you man. It's like saying the elves of Lothlorien, for example, should be barefoot because they revere nature and their buildings are technically in trees.

I think the Dalish go bare foot because of some connection with nature or something.

City elves probably ate theirs in between DA:O and DA2

The barefoot for the Dalish was neat, it gave a sense of "seperatness" and "oness with nature" type of feel.

For the City Elves it didn't really make sense. I say, yes to city elf shoes and no to Dalish.
