Unless you're Toph Beifong or a hobbit, you have no excuse going barefoot, connection to nature or not.  Twigs and stones hurt, wet and cold can damage extremities, and the elves once lived in a glorious city, they were immortal and had loads of time, they had time to put on some shoes before going places.

No excuses.  Every elf should be putting their shoes on.

No excuses? What if a city elf (who are some of the most destitute people in Thedas) doesnt have the money for shoes?

I don't think ALL elves should have to go barefoot just because they are elves, that's indeed rather strange. I do think it does make sense for some Dalish (maybe because of "connection to nature" or - more practical - because you'll never be as quiet with shoes on than you can be without, or just because they like it) and city elves who don't have enough money. I'd rather buy shirts and pants first and then think about shoes, too, if I were them. ;)

Okay, maybe some excuses.  But honestly, if we don't see poor human commoners in places like Darktown in Kirkwall walking around barefoot, why would elves have to?  Even wrapping rags around feet is common sense protection from the elements and filth of a city with no proper sewer system or trash disposal system.

Other than my natural aversion to bare feet, it doesn't seem logical to me, especially for city elves, to not protect their feet.  If you're poor, you need to work, and if you don't take care of your feet, that blocks off many types of job opportunities.

I can see your point but feet can adapt and harden to city conditions , negating the need for shoes or even wraps around the feet.

Hobbits can go barefoot because their feet are tough enough to withstand it, but they don't travel the wilds (much, or often) and live in the comfy homes and villages of the Shire  - so by your reasoning why should they be able to eschew footwear?  Who's to say that elves in Dragon Age don't also have feet that are just as tough but which don't look as big and hairy?

One imagines that (some) alienage elves wear shoes because they were 'taught' to by the humans; the Dalish might not generally wear them because they may not need to and (of course) because of tradition.  Maybe all the Dalish we've seen with shoes started out life in an alienage.... or just never got their feet sufficiently toughened up.

To be honest, to me it seems a weird thing for people to be so set against.

With that logic the Dwarves should be squirming naked on the ground like worms to be constantly in touch with the Stone, with every inch of their body.

Well, there's an image I won't be shaking out of my memory for a while. lol

I never understood this.  In DA:O my elf mage wore slippers and both the city elf and Dalish elf wore boots with their armor.  Zev wore shoes and I don't remember seeing elves without shoes in the camp or city.  May have to go around looking at feet in my current game.

Agree Dobyk, they should  have given an explanation for Merrill and Fenris being without shoes.   :) Even though I hadn't really noticed until OP mentioned it.  Now, however, I will notice every time I play.

I will get pissed if my Dalish mage will have no boots. Curses will fly for this.

I prefer shoes.  These are elves, not hobbits.

But at the very least, city elves should wear shoes.

Since these elves are presented in several ways that make them different to how elves are presented in other works, it would just be another variation on the theme like all the others.  What's wrong with that?

I would buy the whole "no shoes because one with nature" thing if they wore crude pelts, were mostly naked with little bits and bobs such as feathers, animal teeth and claws, etc...and not with fully detailed and forged leather armor with metal parts and inlays, normal gloves, belts, etc...same as humans.

I do know the pain of broken glass (you shouldnt make pre-supposed statements about people) Im not saying ALL city elves should be barefoot but seeing as how they are the poorest people in Thedas at least SOME should be. Also, hurting your feet on glass and other hazardous objects is the daily struggle of those too poor to buy shoes, thats true in fantasy and real life. Personally I loved the barefoot Dalish re-design and I hope it returns for DAI, but I also hope that as Dalish PC's, that people get the option to wear shoes or not.

No, I was specifically addressing your statement that bare feet will eventually "harden and adapt to city conditions".

Foot callouses are not titanium plating.

Then in what sense has the need for shoes been negated?

I think for city elves it was a socio-economic thing. If an elf could afford shoes they would buy them. Most commoners in the alienages likely can't afford going to a cobbler and having custom shoes/boots created- so they walk about in stocking feet or barefoot. As for the Dalish, the warriors were wearing greaves, the others were not. If you don't need it, there would be no sense in wasting resources or taking up the time of the one clan craftsman (and his apprentice) making shoes for everyone when he has armor to repair and hunters to outfit. Cobbling isn't an easy or cheap craft, and if you can get by without it, it would save you quite a bit of coin.

Im ok with elves not having shoes as long as my elf inquisitior wears some, would seem odd wearing armour without anything on their feet.

Having blatantly unarmoured body parts, at least within the party, seems idiotic.

But on that count, Isabela bothered me as much as Fenris did.

Now you know why Merril was a Blood Mage. She just couldn't let all that blood coming out of her feet be wasted.
