I wouldnt mind it really. To me it makes it feel like there is alot more choice to the game instead of "here are the nine people who will follow you around whether you like it or not."

It's always a hard thing for me to justify, while it makes the playthroughs interesting and different, there is that 'picking favorites' problem and then there's that chance to miss out on something really interesting. But the character won has to feel worth it, and I do think that the later in the game that it happens, the less worth it the character is to get. So the Loghain team member bit was never worth it to me because you spent way too much time with Alister already, and he just didn't gell as someone to get (even if I really liked him as a character for a number of reasons, him as a party member wasn't really a bonus with the loss of someone you have been with for so long now lost to you).
But I do like how some characters can just never be apart of the team togeather, and the choice between them is hard. Makeing it feel like the choice has weight, but then again, it can become frustrating when it's poor options handed to you.
Like I didn't like Bethany, but really found Caver interesting, but because I liked the Rouge character style way more then the mage, I didn't get a chance to play with him. That sort of choice between the twins never felt good. So I didn't have the choice unless I played a mage to get him in my party. Maybe if the choice was something we could actually make that early that's fine. Just... not based on your class. Base it on something we say or do, and have it not so late in the game.
Guh but still, I don't enjoy it. It's complicated and I rarely see it done right to know if it's actually really good for storytelling with the interactivity.

I actually like exclusive companions, they make more variety in the playthroughs.

... mmm. yes please more of them.
they add some variety.
But they really should make it more interesting and deeper. Because in my first playthrough i chose Loghain because i really wanted to get rid of that man-child Alistair. Only after Landsmeet you actually have a chance to know Loghain better, before that moment he is a bad guy, and game is pushing you to end him. And his cameo in addon make it worth twice actually, the pick him over Alistair.
So i am all hands for exclusive characters, but only if we would have equal overview on decisions that led us to this "or or" choice.

In most cases I don't like it, gotta catch 'em all you know? I'm ok with it if it's like Loghain and Alistair.

Yes I like the idea of exlusive characters because they make playing more interesting if it's done right. I think that the DA2 approach wasn't good because you didn't have any choice about the matter when comparing to Alistair and Loghain. I guess it could be said that you have a choice in DA2 because you could choose your class accordingly who you want to see with you but I think it shouldn't be like that.

I quite like them. Adds replayability.

It could also be why there are more probable companions based on the leaks/speculation than 9.

If it's to botch the execution like for the twins, then no thanks.

Ah! I just posted this theory in another thread so yes, yes I think it's actually a really good (And hey, heartbreaking) decision process that implements variety. I think full player choice is better than it being per-determined by say.. class choice.. but it's a fun way to implement a talking point of "Oh who did you choose?"

I don't see it as a problem and it can certainly enhance role playing. The first few playthroughs of Origins I always favoured Alistiar but then I created a human noble Warden specifically so I could role play him having legitimate reasons for sparing Loghain. Then I decided to download Return to Ostagar and had found at least partial justification for Loghain's actions. It also explained why they might have moved against my family, since my father had just returned from Orlais on a "mission" for the king and oddly enough Arl Howe accused my father of being a traitor just before I killed him, which without the DLC I would have just denied and thought an absolute lie. Sparing Loghain also gave me an additional benefit regarding Morrigan's offer.
So as long as any information that might support choosing one character over another is contained within the basic game (and not confined to DLC) I don't see what the problem is. You have the option of the same amount of followers, just one character over another. At the end of DA2 in addition to the choice of mages or Templars, you also effectively have to choose Sebastian or Anders when deciding what to do with the latter, even though they are not even of the same class. However, most people would be able to make the choice based on their character's attitude thus far and so the character you end up keeping would be consistent with that.
I do agree that to have a character precluded because of your class is more annoying but could see why they did it that way with Carver/Bethany. From what they say, the class and certainly the race choose will influence how easily or more difficult it is to get people to trust you. I wonder if that also runs to followers? Although from what they say, this would not make it impossible to recruit them or keep them and earn their loyalty, just more difficult, which is fine by me because followers ignoring these aspects doesn't seem consistent with the game world.

I don't know, depends I guess. In DAO, I didn't mind between Alistair and Logahn. I played it so many times that by time I picked Logahn, just to see something different, it was a refreshing change and was interesting to see his side in things. Ashley and Kaiden kinda felt alot like the same person in that they filled the same role, to me, it felt more like a chore going through and rechoosing one over the other for the other imports into ME2 and ME3 - so much so that I don't have a save file with Ashley alive, lol.

As long as the choice isn't at the end of the game I am fine with it, I really really liked Loghain, but when you get him you have basically nothing to do aside from maybe some minor DLC and then it's game over.

No like!!
Same way I don't like the idea of DLC companions, either. I'd like to have everyone available at once.

You mean first day type DLC companions, or the temp ones exclusive just to certain DLC, like Tallis?

Like Sebastian, where you can use them through the whole game.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Mutually exclusive companions can go sit on a cactus.
I was so happy when I learned the classes would finally be distributed evenly. If I end up having to cut anybody from the squad, and screw up my entire party balance, I will flip a goddamn table all the way to Canada.

Oh, okay. Yeah I don't like any of that. I want the game that I pick up at the store and pay for to have all the companions available.
