Since all elven inquisitors will be of Dalish origin or upbringing, I assume it would make sense for all elven players to give their PC a vallaslin tattoo. Wouldn't it be cool, however, to denote you character's temperament and beliefs by choosing a tattoo related to a specific God? Let's say, Nine gods (counting Fen'Harel, of course), with 2 tattoo designs for each - that would be a nice variety of 18 tattoos, no? Sun-shaped awesomeness for Egar'nan, a shield-like design for Mythal, arrows for Andruil, floral/plant designs for Sylaise, so many options and inspirations to draw from! It would be so cool to choose your favourite deity at character creation, even if these are only cosmetic changes. Falon'Din and Dirthamen forever!

I know, I know, the presets don't show any tattoos, but David Gaider confirmed that you will pretty much be a Dalish if you choose to be an elf. If I could get around the whole tattoo thing it would be nice, but it doesn't make sense for a Dalish not to have a Vallaslin to be honest..... These tattoos are very, very embedded in Dalish lore

That's a plain mesh with basic shading and without any textures applied.
To answer the OP, yes, I think we'll get them in DAI. Hope the tattoos are labelled accordingly.

It would help if we knew which design was which. Even giving them simple names somehow, like 'hunt' and 'vengeance' would be great. I didn't think Fen'harel has a tattoo. He's not exactly loved by the clans and there are only 16 tattoos in the games, I think.

Well, in DA:O there are essentially 8 tattoos (one for each God I assume?), but they can be applied either to the whole face, or partially, thus creating 16 varieties. Perhaps Fen'Harel indeed would not be venerated by the Dalish, but you never know, there are always pariahs ![]()

According to the lore it means that your Dalish would be either underaged or not mature enough to be accepted as an adult by others

1. Their parent(s) dragged them to the Dalish.
2. They went with somebody who wanted to go to the Dalish but they themselves did not want to partake in the Dalish Brouhaha.
3. The PC is on the run and Stumbled on to the Dalish.

Or they may have got seperated from their clan because of whatever circumstances before they could get their tattoos. We don't really know anthing about the backstory of any Inquisitors so far ... there are enough possibilities, anyway. ^^
(Personally, if I play a Dalish inquisitor, I'd very much like them to have those tattoos, though.)

And I thought role playing games were about making your character what you want him to be. I played my Dwarf Noble with tattoos, which according to the lore would make him a casteless. Who gives a crap. It's my character and I make him look like whatever I want to.

Not all tatoos make a dwarf casteless, unless you used mods. But they don't count.
There are some restrictions lore-wise. You have a specific freedom inside these borders, but they still exist

Basically I think it should be up to the player to decide to follow the lore in character creation. Some people don't like tattoos.
I'm playing with them as a Dalish, but it does not matter if someone else does not, their game; their choice.

There are always people who will object when it doesn't fit into their narrative. It's natural.

Or I could be one who has been a Dalish for a day who stumbled upon the camp before the Inquisition takes place. B/c imagination. I make it want I want it to be, if no background story is offered. That's one fundamenal aspect in an RPG.

Yet I used a similar tattoo as a castless dwarf, b/c I could and I wanted. No one can say otherwise.

Someone doesn't know the definition of "role-playing".

Lore is offered, unless that one dalish indeed grew up outside of the dalish, but then... is that "dalish" dalish?

Lore can say otherwise. And headcanons, well... they are headcanons, not meant to be taken seriously anyway

However, it's very likely that we will have backgrounds. Maybe not a playable origin, like DA:O, but maybe like Mass Effect's backgrounds. I seriously doubt there will be limitless RPG, as in TES.

I sure hope so. Never been a fan of the "blank slate" type of characters some RPGs offer myself, but rather pre-set characters. However the point I wanted to make was that as of now we know nothing on the possible backgrounds of the protagonist, so one shouldn't jump to conclusions what should and should not be in a character.
Considering as well that it is a role playing game that offers you to creat your character of your own desire, others shouldn't judge others selections for said creation. It wasn't any different in DA:O.

Fair enough. It's true that we don't know much about the backgrounds. I, as you, prefer limits in my backgrounds. Makes roleplaying much more interesting for me.

I agree, up to a point. After all, several things that have been said in this thread would be impossible in DA:O.
The Dalish Warden's family was stated, for example. Father was the keeper before Marethari, mother was a huntress from another clan and the Warden's guardian was Ashalle, a friend of the family. The Dalish Warden couldn't be an elf whose parents dragged them to the Dalish, a friend of an elf who wanted to be a Dalish, an elf on the run who stumbled on to the Dalish, etc.
