Very simple question here; Has anyone purchased and tried the early access to Wasteland 2 yet on Steam? If so, thoughts? I am unsure how to take the game so far since the way it was developed. I really like Wasteland and I am hoping this turns out to be a great game.

It looks good but still very much a work in progress. The initial levels and locales seem rather corridor-y to me, and the overall design setup is more akin to a BioWare game like KotOR than Wasteland 1.
The character system is a bit haphazard but okay, there is a relatively wide variety of roles that allow characters to specialise, though it depends on the content to make use of it all, with skill checks, environmental interaction and the like. Dialog systems are similar to Storm of Zehir, where anyone in your party can use their skills to advantage (as opposed to just the party leader). It's not a whole like the original Wasteland tbh.
Combat is reminiscent of Shadowrun: Returns with elements taken from Jagged Alliance (healing/injuries, ammo management, etc).
The writing is just "there" IMO, it's not mind blowing or conveys a sense of depth and wonder. But it does a solid job of telling you what's going on, with enough characterisation in the dialog and portraits to keep it from being bland. Portraits are actually quite good.
It's fun but a little underwhelming for something that promised so much IMO. However, recent updates have shown that the design and map layout of other areas are a lot like Wasteland 1, in which they are large and open towns/locales. And I'm hopeful that the final product will be quite good.
Still, it is not out yet and it's called early access beta for a reason. But if the early access beta is still available, I wouldn't buy it for $60 right now. I'd wait until release. The launch price might be significantly smaller anyways (I don't know what InXile has planned). I don't regret my Kickstarter pledge, but if I had my time again, I probably would've held off on the $55 tier.

Well at least you give it the possibility of being a decent game when it goes gold. I never played Shadowrun, so I cannot make out the comparison. I don't want a linear game, not for this second release of one of my favs from years gone by. I am in no way expecting a direct Wasteland sequel, but it should definitely carry over some of it original elements from the original. Wouldn't be a cool joke to have the first install of the game revert to the 2D graphics and side-scrolling movements ![]()
