Am I right in thinking that Shield Gate in ME2 works the way Health Gate does in ME3?

From what I have seen, in ME2 you have a brief moment when your shields are about to go down to get into cover and wait for them to restore. This is very similar to the Health Gate mechanism in ME3 where you have a small window to use medi-gel or get in cover before you bleed out.

Conversely, I have not seen any kind of pause in shield damage when you are about to lose your shields in ME3, nor, as far as I can tell, is there any Health Gate in ME2.

Did they simply reverse the gate mechanism between the two games?

In ME3 there are both shield and health gates.  Typically they have the same value.  For example, on Insanity (SP) and Gold (MP) both gates have a duration of 0.1s.  Platinum is nominally 0.01s for both gates, but the actual duration is fps dependent and typically a bit longer.

I don't remember if there is actually a health gate in ME2.

I wonder why I have never noticed the shield gate in ME3? Maybe it is not as distinctive. In ME2 when you get down to shield gate you can see a tiny sliver of shield/barrier that doesn't go away even as your are being shot. Maybe the display is different in ME3.

I don't think the visuals are as pronounce for ME3, although in SP I think it gives you a bit of time dilation when you are on shield gate.
