Also, Varric was pretty anti-brutality and slaughter. He might have approved of robbing a few folk, but murder always seemed to be a big no for him if his friendship/rivalry chart is anything to go by.
The conversation that sticks in my mind is if you ask him "Do you have any war stories?" I don't quite remember his response but it's not a nice one and you take a rivalry hit for it.
Varric's always been a man who'd rather live a quiet life, and him mourning the deaths of those innocent is well within his character, particularly as he has no stance on the mage-templar war and, as far as I can tell, sees it as a waste of lives.
I think he might be getting more aware and reflective, but he still seems the same to me in terms of his personality.
Exactly. Noteworthy moments of his personality in this regard, that I remember, are for example looking for Martin's Cargo. If you threated Aden on his life Varric will disapprove. I also think he will say something afterwards, but not sure.
And when you side with the Templars he says "But this... Helping innocent people, protecting our way of life, that's worthy" or something to that extend.

Varric's moral integrity was the most refreshing part of DA:2. He was also by far my favorite of the companions because of it. I sincerely hope he still has it and I don't necessarily want him to 'choose a side' in inquisition. His refusal to do so in DA:2 was part of why I respect him. I don't want to take a side. I find it excessively annoying, all of it.

For those of you who have seen the new trailer, we can rest easy. Varric cracks a great one liner in it! It seems he's still got his humor after all.

So, while he has a prominent spot in the trailer showcasing his humor, I think it's interesting that in the end sequence he's actually standing a fair distance from the Inquisitor, which I think may support my hope that he won't end up being your right hand dwarf again.
Someone in the Solas thread pointed out that if we're going with The Last Supper comparisons, Varric's actually in the Judas position. Wonder if that might have some significance; he was the one party member who wouldn't betray or abandon Hawke; I doubt that'll hold true, here.

I think the events in Kirkwall has made Varric aware that there are terrible forces in Thedas that needs a bolt between its eyes.
Losing Kirkwall to the Mage uprisings will have hardened him somewhat, so my guess is that he is in the fight so no one else has to experience such destruction.
He's still Varric, he still jokes and drinks, but he knows now that he can't joke his way through the entirety of life, there are good people to save.
His story suggests that he doesn't drink. Or at least, not from the Hanged Man. ![]()
the developers used the red lyrium to die his hair red, and cassandra slapped a collar and leash on him, he is now her slave.... and heaven forbid, but it looks like they andersized him.... meaning they make him more serious and less jokey.... i dont have to remind you what a train wreck anders was.... but this is all just speculation from the expressions he makes in the trailers
Early in DA2 Anders still cracks jokes, like how best to punish Bartrand. He gets more serious as they game goes on. It's subtle, though. It's possible, though, that Varric was omitting the "clunkier" parts of the story to speed along the interrogation. It occurred to me at about my 17th or 18th playthrough that up until the final sequence, one never sees Meredith acting crazy. It's all hearsay.
Also, Varric was pretty anti-brutality and slaughter. He might have approved of robbing a few folk, but murder always seemed to be a big no for him if his friendship/rivalry chart is anything to go by.

Varric's a "power behind the throne" kind of guy. He pays, he bribes, he listens, he speaks, but he's a manipulator, not a doer. It's reflective of his original role as a snake that the player wasn't supposed to be sure if they could trust.

I read somewhere that his original role was of someone you weren't supposed to think you could trust. Since Game of Thrones references are popular around here, Baelish comes to mind.
