One thing that has always bothered me is that shepard's backgrounds were never explored beyond getting a small mention. I always thought it would be fascinating if they created a DLC for that very purpose. it would've added severe character depth and development. I feel like it would've allowed me to be more emotionally invested into my character.

so I was wondering what do any of you think of the next game starting fairly early on in The character's life such as childhood, or at very least, sometime before the main plot starts?

Well they never went completely in depth but they did mention it in Mass Effect 1. If you picked Spacer as your Shepard's background you have a conversation with your mom, for Earthborn, a member of a gang Shepard belonged to asks Shepard for help, and for Colonist you will be asked to help a survivor of mindoir a colony Shepard use to live in when she/he was young but was raided.

I don't care for childhood sequences. I have war flashbacks of the Assassin's Creed II opening where you play Ezio's birth and squirm at his father. Even Fallout 3, with those bizarre child actor's just staring through you from the uncanny valley. Uncharted 3 did it well, but I really have no other interest in it personally.

I actually was kind of interested in seeing a flashback of Shepard between tours once though. Maybe what it is like for a soldier to run into his old squad mate when they are both on leave, but it's not so easy once you've been out there. Just sort of walk around whatever station or colony that Shepard last called home and get a melancholy sense of how being on active duty is kind of a relief when you feel made to do it.

There is little that can be done in terms of interesting gameplay as a child, esp. from the ME universe, and even if they figured it out, it would be a huge departure from the rest of the game and ME style overall

When children are involved there are a lot of limiting factors at play, most issues though revolve around laws involving how children are portrayed in certain countries..... especially if there is any violence towards children involved.

Hence the screen blackout in BioShock when you choose the 'bad' option on Little Sisters and nuke-surviving children of Fallout.

I liked that they kept most of Shepard's pre-service history vague. Plus I'm not sure how they could render the custom Sheps to look like kids.

The sci fi genre has very few fans that like kids. Keep them away, very far away.

That sounds really pathetic when put that way.

Kids, what a word.

K-I-D-S, kids.

But no, leave the protagonist's history to the player.

I'm still hoping for playable Asari, so starting from childhood might be...problematic in terms of the game's timeline. If it's another human-centric story, it might work but I'm not convinced it would add anything that would make it more emotionally engaging than it already is.

I do wish there had been a flashback in regards to pre-service history for Shepard, though. Each flashback tailored to your choice of War Hero, Sole Survivor, or Ruthless. As an example, Sole Survivor could flashback to Akuze and play out the last minutes of that tragedy...maybe even encounter Toombs and see what he was like back then. War Hero's flashback would revolve around the Skyllian Blitz and Ruthless would go back to Torfan. I thought it would be cool if each flashback culminated in a final decision...that decision being something that could show how Shepard's reputation was either deserved or perhaps misunderstood. And that being something Shepard could choose to disclose to the LI or Liara (if no LI) in ME3. But alas, it wasn't to be.

I always wonder why people want to play Asari so much. They're like the worst alien species ever, blue skinned human females basically.

that's what I've been saying since back when they were still making ME3 DLC

if they mixed that in with the dream sequences it would've been more meaningful

The worst? No, no. Tiberius is the worst.

I hope not. I don't think there is much to be gained from a story perspective by playing through part of the protagonist's childhood.

Also generally speaking child actors can't act and are annoying. See the Catalyst as a good example of what can go wrong when you start using child actors.

Not from his/her childhood, but maybe from something recent. A scene with Shepard interacting with fellow comrades during basic training or showing him/'her receiving his/her N7 rank.

Only if an adult female voice actress voices the child character, like they do in cartoons/anime. Actual kids can't act, period. Very few and far between exceptions won't change the larger picture. We've seen it first hand in ME3.

Late teens, early 20s  -- or alien equivalent -- with no previous history other than where you're born, and your actions and choices define how the game remembers you.

Wouldn't it be more interesting if the protagonist were not a pure soldier this time?

Ugh no, he did barely acceptable job, and not until his second try (EC). Don't get why didn't they just had one of their female actresses do it, many of them did cartoon kid voices

Nancy Cartwright should've played the catalyst, just to hear that character tell Shepard to eat their shorts.

I don't think the Catalyst is supposed to sound at all genuine or easily sympathetic. But that's my own thing.

I mean.. "Clearrlyy organics are more resourceful than we realized.     "

Perfect voice for that. Perfect. lol
