Ok  please correct me if I am wrong (give me some hope lol) but I am looking through the history of thedas and I don't see dwarves making that much of an impact or really being needed other then being drug dealers (lyrium) for templars!  I mean dwarves are nothing more than the side kick right now!!!! I mean yea they have helped out here and there, but not enough to where they are seen as anything other than a thug, merchant or random mercenary! I mean are dwarves going to continue to made to feel like the just there race? Forever a footnote in thedas history! (not talking about things that only effected dwarves, I am aware a lot happen in that regard)

Dwarves were supposedly hugely successful before the Blights, but the darkspawn ravaged their Thaigs and numbers, being that they also multiply underground and continue attacking the dwarves even between Blights, when people on the surface basically forget they even exist. The problem is, there's not much recorded history from when the dwarves were at their peak.

Pretty much what Mort said. The dwarves right now, as they stand are very few in number confined to two underground kingdoms in all of Thedas (not counting the surface dwarves). That said, their merchant's guild is pretty influential and they have been retaking some thaigs since the last blight, so you could say hey are on the rise. :)

Dwarves are  not a footnote! They are the most epic race in the game (in my humble opinion, which makes it 100% true for everyone else too, )

Okay, so the surfacers don't have much interaction with the dwarves unless it's for lyrium trade or for working with surface dwarves. But if the dwarves go extinct in Orzammar, the surface will soon face a never-ending blight, just like the dwarves now are facing, and have faced for centuries.

There won't be any 'cut off the archdemon's head' and they run back underground. They'll keep moving, advancing, constantly, never ending, and without the dwarves, humans and elves will no longer be able to work with lyrium. It's so dangerous to work with raw, unprocessed lyrium that not even mages can go near it, it has to be processed first.

Which means humans and elves can't go into the deep roads and mine it.

That in turn means no more Grey Wardens as they need lyrium for the joining, no more templars, and no more lyrium for magical rituals for the mages, which in turn means a lot more blood mages because blood magic can be used as a substitute for lyrium.

The dwarves are one of the most important races in Thedas, even if the work they do is largely ignored and the surface is unaware of their importance.

I think they got quite a bit of attention in DAO, Awakening, and Amgarrak. You might even say DA2, since a lot of main story revolves around the Lyrium idol.

The epilogue of DAO hints at talk of an Exalted March on them too.. it seems like whether you help Brother Burkel (build a chantry) or help Dagna (mages find refuge in Orzammar), then the Chantry wants to call an Exalted March. Perhaps we'll see more of this actually happening in future games.
