The companions are not just there to maybe follow the PC into battles, they are part of the inner circle of the Inquisition. They are part of the leadership. Iron Bull, GreyWarden Dude and Cassandra all look to have more military/war experience than Cullen.

They obviously can't handle military affairs if they're riding around with the Inquisition, though. If communications, logistics and command are all handled at a central location, it would hardly work to plan things in the middle of a camp with the Inquisitor.

The point of dedicated advisors is to have someone who stays at Skyhold 24/7 and can coordinate the Inquisition's operations full-time.

The companions can't do that, and neither can the Inquisitor- which is why we have delegated that to the advisors (or whatever they are) in the first place.

It makes a degree of sense to me. I imagine templars promote more on administrative capability more so than combat expertise. Cullen's a capable fighter, but likely doesn't measure up when put against Cassandra, Iron Bull, and Beard Warden; makes more sense to have them out in the field putting swords to demons and have him back at the keep organizing things.

I also imagine that while they're not out, they'd be assisting him.

I'm surprised there's still any debate about who the advisors are at this point.

I imagine a senior Templar would have more of a grasp of strategy and logistics than a frontline warrior, too. If the Grey Warden and the Iron Bull have only led groups of soldiers in the dozens or even fewer, they're probably experts at planning individual battles but not really at deciding the course of a war.

(In that sense it's the distinction between an army general, who commands entire theatres of battle with hundreds of thousands of troops, and a captain or lieutenant who has a few hundred, and no "overall picture" of the conflict.)

Cassandra probably has similar strategic experience as the head of the Seekers, but she's the last person who would want to walk away from being "the tip of the spear", and directly involved in every battle the Inquisitor wants to join.

Truth be told I wasn't thinking Cullen would make a great military advisor. I was thinking his role would be more "liaison to the loyal templars", just like I was thinking Leliana's primary role would be liaison to the Divine.

But with it becoming apparent that the Divine is going to bite it, and Cullen ditching his templar garb, that doesn't seem to be happening.

Well  - it will be interesting. If Cullen is the only NCP LI then I have to assume fan service is the driver.

Personally I think it would have been helpful to have a templar companion... are seekers trained in templar skills? I wonder if Templar will be part of the warror skill tree.

Most seekers are recruited from the ranks of the templars, but it's never indicated that Cassandra was. Never the less I expect that there would be some overlap in the skill set.

Then again, I never found the templar spec all that necessary.

Why did Cullen return?

He has lots of fans.

Simple as that.

Also why Batman keeps beating people who he really should not be able to.

Fan Power makes the world go round.

Na, Batman is just awesome

Actually Cullen's appearance still looked like his Templar concept art, so I think he's still a Templar

He is missing the enormous Templar sword insignia, though. That's something they changed from the survey art, which had a similar outfit.

(And the Inquisitor's message at the end of the trailer seemed to be that the companions and advisors had discarded their previous allegiances.)

It's been ages since I've seen Cullen's templar/survey art. Anyone have it on hand?

It's virtually identical, now that I look at it:

We know they also changed other characters' outfits (DHMG's uses the one from the War Room concept art, not the survey) but Cullen's looks like they copied the survey picture exactly, minus the sword.

I wouldn't doubt there's some significance to the lack of the sword.

I'm just wondering what the significance is to the rest of it, or if it's just to give him a more distinctive, unique look than the standard templar armor.

Maybe he got promoted after Kirkwall to Knight Commander, Meredith had her own distinctive outfit

I think it's likely that Scribbles the scribe girl will also be a love interest, likely either a F/F love interest or bi.

True, though it didn't look much anything like that. Maybe when you get to Knight Commander you get to design your own outfit.

Could it be he was thrown out?

That's how I viewed it, also makes me wonder what the other ranks above Knight Commander look like

In the trailer, we see Leliana in what looks like a camp (and DG is also there along with Cassandra).

I hope they clear up the hierarchy cause it's confusing as hell who actually runs the Order.

I'm assuming the Knight Divine is the "head" of the Order but works under the Divine (and the Seekers)

Didn't Lambert run the whole place? Or was that the Seekers?

shows how confusing the hierachy is.....
