Welcome to the Leliana discussion thread. A place for discussing new info released about Leliana and speculating on both her past and present influence on Thedas and the Inquisition.

Updates and Character Info:

Sheryl Chee confirmed to be returning as Leliana's writer via Leliana's new Character Profile

"She has many names. Most know her as "Sister Nightingale” or “the Left Hand of the Divine.” To the rare friend, she is Leliana. They say she found faith amid darkness, and that her devotion to the Maker is matched only by her devotion to Divine Justinia V, a woman who is both mentor and savior. Those who have earned her loyalty know her as a steadfast ally. But enemies of the Divine know to fear her, for she is the shadow behind the Sunburst Throne—the one who watches and waits, who strikes when her mark is most vulnerable and least suspecting."  -As taken from Leliana's new character page. June 2nd

Looks like Leliana is all but confirmed to be the leader of the Inquisition's spy network according to this interview (fair warning: the interview contains some minor spoilers about the beginning of the game): http://www.ausgamers...es/read/3432915

"The Inquisition has three main pillars right, they have a military force lead by one particular character, you've got a secret facet with spies and assassins lead by Leliana from DAO..."

Corinne Kempa is returning as her voice actress:

According to Mike Laidlaw via twitter, Leliana's eyes appearing brown in some screenshots is a bug. Her eyes will be blue in DA:I

*Also  I don't consider it much of an update but Leliana has been confirmed to not be a romanceable character multiple times but since it keeps seeming to pop up I'm putting this here. I repeat Leliana is not romanceable by the inquisitor.*

Let us have a merry time discussing the wondrous tales of our Sister Nightingale! :D

Note: This thread is for discussing Leliana, in an appreciative manner. I know a lot of people still can't get over about how her death was seemingly "retconned" because of random game animations, resent her for it, and like to call her the Liara of the Dragon Age series and I would like to see little to none of that in this thread.

I find people make assumptions about what type of personality a character will make based purely on the person that wrote them.

I asked Sheryl on Twitter whether she was writing Leliana and she replied: "Hi! I'd rather not say. People seem fixated on who wrote what for some reason. I'd prefer not to encourage that fixation."

I'm going to guess that's why we don't know which, if any, companions she's written.

I kind of feel bad for asking now.

Hee hee. Don't feel bad, Maria.

There's a lot more space here so I'll explain some of my reasons for being reticent. By the time the game is out, a character like Leliana will have had a huge ton of work poured into her, from several different departments—art, cinematics, level design, to name a few. Of course there is writing, but much of her character also comes across in how she looks, how she moves, the expressions on her face, and of course, her VO. There's so much that goes into fleshing out a character that it makes me a little uncomfortable how much people seem to obsess over just the writing.

Apart from that, people seem to believe they can predict whether they'll like a character going by who has written them. For instance: "Sheryl wrote Isabela, and Isabela was a worthless **** so I'm sure I'll hate whoever else Sheryl wrote." (This is an exaggerated and hugely simplified example. I don't think anyone has actually said this thing.) Setting aside the obvious problems of disliking people because of their perceived "sluttiness" or whatever, it also seems to imply that writers can only write one thing, or that their writing in the past is indicative of their writing in the future. Writers can grow too, you know. And sometimes we like to write things that are (gasp!) different from things we've previously written.

Anyway, those are my reasons for not wanting to answer Maria's question. I understand being totally excited about the character/game and grasping at every shred of information. I just feel that "who wrote what" can be misleading, and would prefer if people played the game without these preconceived ideas in place.

Okee! Carry on speculating. More shoe talk plzkthx.

She and Cassandra will be romancing my ears whenever they talk.

Leliana's doesn't quite have the same effect on me as Cassandra's. :)

I can't disagree more. This giggle still gives instant diabeetus, and then gives my recently acquired diabeetus diabeetus. :S

Ahahahaha. I actually hadn't seen that before (my playthrough was mostly Leliana, Alistair, and Morrigan).  Pretty adorable.  Softiiie! :D

You, Mr. Schumacher, are a very brave man. ;)

I may have more context (and exposure) to one voice over the other in recent times too

I may have bumped into someone that resembled our Sister Nightingale in a recent playthrough.

I just wanted to share that my response was: "Oh yes... that was awesome."

Carry on

It's possible that she will die first :P

(I just realized that can be taken all sorts of ways.... Dohhh ho ho ho ho ho  )

I wonder if she'll be romanceable. It'd probably ****** off quite a few people.

That or I'm so far off that she thinks it's flipping hilarious. :)

I liked it because I enjoy seeing the different interpretations of characters, especially when people notice things that may not have been intended. I just find it very interesting to see people drawing all these different conclusions about one character.  ^_^

So if she wasn't romanced by the Warden, then how come she don't wannna get it on with The Inquisitor?

Why does there need to be a reason?  Perhaps it's simply "she's not interested?"

I seriously hope this isn't in reference to the Warden.

The word 'may' is suspicious in this context.

GODDAMN BIOWARE

Not all Warden's will have entered a relationship with Leliana.

I like the meanness we see. My Warden taught her well. It will be good to see her kill the clowns that tortured her. And my femquisitor will gladly help

I enjoyed seeing her take the small moment of opportunity to seize the initiative and remove the guard from the equation :)

Anyways, the first thing she says is "You're alive." This implies that she thought the Inquisitor was dead. Before you open the door, the torturer tells her, "There's no one left."

If this was simply a mission where Leliana was sent to assassinate someone, she failed, and was captured, why would she believe the Inquisitor had perished?

Dorian says, "You aren't curious how we got here?" If it were simply a matter of them riding to the town and killing people as they made their way to the castle, I don't think he'd say that.

On another note: the female qunari is so tall. Look how she just towers over Leliana!

I'm so glad we went with an imposing character still for the female Qunari!

Is it wrong that what I'm looking forward to most in the game is playing someone that looks to be about 7 foot tall?

Story, characters, exploration, combat, and lore are all nice, but little will compare with smacking my head against door frames when I walk around.

I have scoured your post and find nothing wrong with it.  So no.

It invokes powerful feelings in the player, so yes, it is a good story.

I'm going to interject here somewhat.  I consider it complicating that we've been tuned so much to see the physical abuse towards women as being something that invokes powerful feelings in people, because it can lend itself to things like benevolent sexism (overly trying to protect women from physical threats - violent or otherwise - simply because they're women and we get strong emotional reactions to seeing women, specifically, get hurt).  I think it also plays a reinforcement that feeling strong emotional reaction to violence towards women has a potentially negative perspective to how we perceive violence towards men.  As such "he can take it" and so forth (despite perhaps the fact that he cannot) and an undermining and dismissal towards challenges a man may have by virtue of him being a man and having unreasonable universal roles and expectations assigned to him that may not actually be necessary.

I agree that it's more powerful to take characters we care about, but I don't think it's unreasonable and step back for a moment to critique this in the context of historical depiction of violence against people and wonder "is there unforeseen consequences to something like this?"

People finding suffering enjoyable is pretty dang terrible

By extension:

Enjoyable may not be the best word, but within the context of a fictional, interactive experience, I do "enjoy" feeling strong emotional responses to what is happening on the screen.  Not that I "enjoy" seeing bad things, but I really like that a fictional game world can bring out such powerful emotions towards me:
