Looking Ferelden might have been part of her appeal when she was a bard. To some Olesian nobles she'd probably seem exotic. Given that seduction is part of a bard's toolset, looking a bit different or foreign could be an asset. Even the enmity between Orlais and Ferelden could be part of the appeal. To quote Leliana, "Forbidden fruit is the sweeter, no?"

I have no doubt about that :P

True that. Some might have also thought that, since Fereldens are unwashed brutes, she would be less dangerous than a 'real' Orlesian bard. How foolish...

Well, something happened to make her hate Ferelden too.

I guess she flipped a coin after when deciding what she considers herself.

Leliana is a rather fluid individual. I suspect she felt Orlesian in Orlais and Fereldan in Ferelden, though perhaps askew in both.

Her memory is also fluid.

It was in Leliana song. If you pick the dialog option that admits to jealousy in their room. She doesn't really bark per se but she definitely isn't happy with the fact that Marjolaine was with a Ferelden man.

Or at least that's what she says bothered her about it

Right. It sounds less like Leliana is bothered by it and more that she thinks it's an effective way to show disapproval to a woman who looks down on Fereldans.

I guess I just don't want to believe Leliana would be capable of doing probably the cruelest thing you could do to a parent simply out of anger and malice.

Well, they were holding her captive, possibly torturing her.  So...

That is actually true of most people. Our emotions tend to color our memories as well as our judgement.

And Felix basically looks like a corpse. It may have been equal parts malice and mercy.

But not of most fictional characters.

Leliana took a level in badass. She will now kick puppy-dogs and murder innocent zombie children to get her way.

Morally justified revenge for the win!

*snip*

Yes I am serious.  B)

There are several points throughout the series where Fereldans are said to look different, whether or not that is reflected in the game. Loghain's quoted dialogue is one example. The bigots in Kirkwall are another.

IDK if Marjolaine really looked down on Fereldens that much if she's selling out to them....  but that might be part of it.

Yep, Empress Celene notes how Ferelden Leliana looks in Mota and I think Aveline gets something similar when she's called a "Ferelden" with an Orlesian name from Jeven, to name some other examples.

People you've conquered are exotic. People who've successfully rebelled are savages.

That wasn't a puppy. That was a full grown toy dog possessed by a demon obviously.
