I can't imagine any torture by magic in Dragon Age that wouldn't also damage one's appearance. There's no psionics where you just cause stabbing pains in their brain but leave their body intact.

Incorrect! The Horror spell with the Despair upgrade will do spirit damage for as long as the target remains stunned, with horrific visions reeling through their mind. And with Origins spells, Curse of Mortality seems to leave no visible marks either.

I can't say I've taken a single evil option in a Dragon Age or Mass Effect game*, but I don't think people who do so are terrible in any way.

There may be some posters who desire Leliana's torture to be graphic or unsavory because they find the spectacle enjoyable. If developers include that sort of content, I agree they need to handle it in a thoughtful way that doesn't simply appear to some people's baser natures.

Video games are visual though. If someone has been hurt, it's good to show them as being hurt. Having them look relatively unharmed undermines the scene.

* Unless you count the Dark Ritual, and I don't.

I dont recall my Warden and Alistair having injures in Fort Drakkon
Did it make the situation less horrible? No

If they care more about realism than Lelianna getting tortured then I have nothing good to say about them

It's not about caring for Leliana or not. It's about designing a video game where you have to make a believable scene from a writting and cinematic point of view. It's the same thing as Hawk having blood on his / her face after a combat.

Leliana in full armor was indeed a bit foolish. She has her face clean with this lip gloss.

It's ok!

It's not ok!

It's ok!

It's not ok!

You people are horrible!

We're not!

Yes you are!

We're not!

*rage mode* Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Mordin was totally OK with me not curing the Genophage.  He even helped out with the Crucible.  :)

I'm fairly convinced Leliana being fully armored in the scene is for the same reason why the Inquisitor wears Inquisition armor in the trailer (at the point which he first meets Cassandra). Obviously it's not the armor we start with, but it's iconic and recognizable.
Leliana's probably in her standard outfit for the immediate connection it provides to the not quite so die-hard fans or new fans that Inquisition may bring in.

And I fully support Not sending her in the first place, if you'd rather never see her put in that situation.

And... I think Leliana is a parfait!

The thread would be a bit boring tbh if it was nothing but gushing about how adorable Leliana is without the occasional tangent that's still quite related to her.

I have faith that Bioware will handle the scene tastefully

That being said I do think some of the fans asking for more "realism" are doing it for suspicious reasons. Some not all.

They do and it is horrifying they think it is necessary to see someone suffering so they can enjoy a game
Then, there're people who sold Fenris to his former master and killed both Mordin and Wrex
Some people are just terrible like that

Pfft, those scenes were great. Everyone should kill Wrex at least once, just to see some great writing. Also killing mordin was justified, IMO, especially if you have wreave.

I think that seeing some cuts and bruises, some broken armour that's digging into her skin, and maybe a knife impaled in her side. Just small things like that would be enough.

I understand that, but this particular subject is just going nowhere. It's just the same arguments being rephrased and reused.

Could I reiterate my point that there is in fact magic that won't leave visible damage?

If people are saying the same thing, that's probably because it is seems logical. And I find unreasonable to call people horrible because they want a  believable scene; We just heard the man slapping Leliana in her face, calling her little bird, and we see nothing. Also in dragon age origins, people could have blood on their face.

I don't care about realism, so no fear there. Alternatively, I sent Leliana forward as werewolf bait with only a twinge of guilt.

I can simultaneously consider Leliana a person I care about, a tool to solve the various problems the game gives me, and a narrative device. I can both say that I care deeply about Leliana and that I don't care for her at all.

I can even say that because I care for Leliana I enjoy seeing her tortured because I find it distressing. What I look for in fiction is the ability to make me feel, often things I hate feeling. Her torture is far more pleasurable than that of a random extra because it bothers me so much more.

In this scene, Leliana's purpose is to make me feel bad. That sucks for her but is fine for me.

To be honest I'm not angry with the folks wanting more realism. I was freaked out by the accusations that our choices in a video game somehow reflect on the kind of person we are in real life. Who was that lawyer who always called games murder simulators? Yeah, I was getting that vibe. Disturbing...

Since my earlier post was slightly buried between talk of Leliana's thighs, and I feel this is relevant information:

In the now closed thread here: http://forum.bioware...m-of-the-demos/

John Epler confirms that the model used for Leliana in the E3 demo is a placeholder for that scene, since the real one would for, whatever reason, be too spoilery.

Your option re: fetch quests is not between that and a quest with context, cinematics, etc.

It is, literally, an additional way to get quests and to interact with NPCs. It is not 'these types of quests or top quality quests!', but rather 'these types of quests or no quests'.

RE: Leliana's appearance. That isn't final on that segment, for reasons which include spoilery things.

For whatever reason, the nifty quote buttons apparently disappear from the posts when threads get locked.

Mind if an outsider puts in their two cents?

Torture, if it occurs, should be portrayed realistically but without titillation. This is a mature game. It's not Saw.

People make all sorts of decisions for all sorts of reasons. I view myself as writing a story and the Inquisitor is a character in that story. Leliana will probably get tortured at least once on my watch because it's a great scene and hardly stupid on the Inquisitor's part. I don't do perfect playthroughs. I do interesting ones.

It's not necessary for enjoyment. It just makes the moment seem like it actually happened with the visuals matching the dialogue.

Yeah, show don't tell.

In this case the visuals are undercutting what the story is trying to convey.

Given how...rash (understandable but not acceptable) Leliana's actions are during the negotiation, I really would like to see the graphics back up what is going on with her character.

As someone who's somewhat on the same side as you I would like to ask that you calm the heck down and stop personally attacking people.

Have faith in that Bioware will probably handle the scene right and with taste.

We get it: you don't approve. It's just a video game! So can you please stop accusing everyone of being the Antichrist? That'd be great.

And if you are so upset by violence, why would you want to play this game? The protagonist is going to kill a bajillion things in this game, including people who have families. Why would you want to play a game like that? Don't you care that you will be depriving children of their parents?

No, she is not. Maria would be one of the last persons on the bsn that would gain a kick out of Leliana tortured.
