I dunno, if the Warden isn't dead but missing then dating might be decidedly abnormal.
I'm referring to imports where the Warden died slaying the archdemon, survived but didn't romance Leliana, or romanced Leliana but either dumped her (or was dumped by her) during the course of DA:O.
Obviously if the Warden survived DA:O and the relationship continued throughout, it should remain active and be carried over into DA:I.
At best, the Warden has been missing a couple of years, not 10.

My Warden and Leliana were a thing for most of my canon playthrough... I think I cheated on her with Isabella though... might have been before we were official though... either way, she never found out. 
Nevertheless, we's was tight, but in the end I had to agree with Alistair, letting the old god's soul live in Morrigan's child would bite us on the butt one day, so when it was crunch time, I took one for the team. Ultimate Sacrifice. If I may say so, I thought that was a beautiful end to my Warden's story, first she lost her family (human noble), then found true love, but even though Leliana was waiting, I couldn't let Alistair shaft the crown I got him. The safety and longevity of the nation comes before one's self, such is the mark of any noble warrior.
In the end I recall something about Leliana went back to Orlais(?) I think, and wrote a song inspired by her broken heart. I hope this story is reflected in Inquisition. It will be surreal getting to know Leliana as a new character, and have her tell of her lost love.
Yeah, it was my first playthrough that made me realize they were actual CHARACTERS rather than sort of minigames. I wasn't really roleplaying so much as trying to score (no pun intended) by achieving all of the content and achievements which appealed to me like being a King, completing the straight romances, and so on.
It was a rude awakening to realize the game was treating my actions as something I did (and something only an irredeemable but all too realistic sociopath misogynist would do) rather than the acts of a gamer gaming.
Subsequent PCs loved Morrigan and Leliana faithfully.
Though at least one loved them both but had to choose for decency's sake.

My only regret was not having Loghain sacrifice himself... but I figured this Warden (I refuse to acknowledge ownership) would lay with Morrigan, and then take the glory by slaying the beast himself.

I think playing "Randy Cousland who worships the Old Gods, hates the Chantry, and sleeps with everyone while gathering more and more personal power to himself and crippling his allies emotionally" led me to create Paragon Mage Hawke Qusitor, who is like Mage Jesus except he punches people in the face.

My canon Warden had a simultaneous romance going with Leliana and Morrigan. The Morriganmance only ended when Morrigan decided to take off for parts unknown, or perhaps when the Warden elected not follow her in Witch Hunt. I like my heroes flawed, and the Warden's flaw was that while he could be trusted to do the right thing in the big picture (saving Connor, peace with the Elves & Werewolves, ect, ect) he was also a spoiled, entitled noble and a bit of a rake. His feelings for both characters are genuine and he cared for them both, but he was unable to look beyond his own selfish wants or needs.
Hawke was almost a complete reversal of the Warden. He was entirely devoted to Isabela, who had had some similarities with that Warden.

Yep. For the first while of my canon DAO playthrough, I felt like I was righting the wrongs of an evil Cousland from a split dimension.
Both my Hawke's have been premeditated badasses, but Mage Jesus does sounds like someone I'd want on my side.

It gets worse as he did his best to shut down any of her old Bardic and assassin training, encouraging her to just think happy and nice thoughts the entire way through.
I also spared Jowan to be merciful, even though it meant him being made Tranquil versus a merciful death at Arl Eamon's hands.
He broke up the elven couple at the Dalish Camp too.

MageJesus had his dark side despite his love for all things. He, unlike SexistCousland, toughened Alistair and Leliana because like a good parent you have to open their eyes to harsh realities.
He was also a Bhelenist and didn't hesitate to stab the previous Arl in the throat at the first mention of treating elves not like people.
Conversations with Wynne got rather nasty too as while no Anders, everytime she said he should return to the Circle, it was more, "LOL, NOPE."
Poor Leliana and him probably did argue about the Circle and Chantry a lot.
I hope they can reconcile in Inquisitor.
