Speculation ahoy...

 

The tarot card of Leliana that you have as your avatar has her with a crow perched on her shoulder. Perhaps DA:I is borrowing from A Song of Ice and Fire (a.k.a. Game of Thrones) and using crows to carry messages? In any case regardless of the species of bird used the rookery might be used to send messages back and forth to far flung outposts and agents. If that is the case it might make sense for Leliana, as your spy chief, to be spending a lot of time there.

I disagree. The one in the card is a raven. Crows have thinner beaks and are smaller. It's probably artist oversight but who knows...

Speaking of ravens, saw these at the Tower of London when I was there, freakin' huge birds.

 

 

And yeah the bird in the tarot looks like a raven to me also, too large to be a crow plus the bill is the wrong shape.

According to this article Leliana like hanging out in the rookery of Skyhold. I wasn't aware that a castle can even have a rookery...

 

Someone explain this to me. 

Unless its a rookery of nugs then that makes sense. 

She did appear in such a place in one of the trailers.

 

She stood in some tower and turned to face camera and a flock of raven flew by here, which makes since she is your spymaster if you will so she take care of the birds.

The birds add the little bit of mystery to a Bardmaster, IMHO.

(Yeah, please note that she's in command of the spy network. That's essentially Bards in Orlais. Thus, she got a promotion to a Bardmaster! Yay! Such logic! Back to my hole now.)
