To get the messengers to trigger, try going to see your companions, hang around them for a minute or so. If nothing happens, move on to the next. You should eventually encounter a messenger talking to them. Then go see the person on the other end of the convo. Say you find a messenger talking to Dorian, who says something about Josephine, then go see Josephine next to hear the follow-up.

It's very finicky. I do it when I'm waiting for resource collection quests to finish.

What do these messengers even look like? How do you identify them?

I've put nearly 300 hours into the game and I'm pretty sure I never saw them once.

@Basement Cat: So they can just appear when you go near someone? Interesting. Might have to try hanging around a companion/advisor a bit more, then. I suppose I've only ever seen them with Josephine (and, two or three times, the researcher) because I pass by her desk a lot more often since it's on the way to the war room. Still, Varric is just inside the main keep so I pass by him even more often, and I've never seen a messenger pay him a visit.

@Fiery Phoenix: If memory serves, the messengers I've encountered were a dark-haired dwarven woman in something resembling a scout/agent outfit (minus the cowl) and a black lady in a robe. They're quite noticeable when they appear in Josie's office since there's nobody else in there otherwise.

I know Leliana's messenger is a blond Elf. I think he's dressed in blue.

Josephin's is a dark skinned human woman with a shaved head.

Cullen's is a lady dwarf. I can't remember other details. Darn!

They wander around quite a bit.

The mechanic is really finicky. Sometimes I go up to Leliana and the messenger is there, but he says nothing and walks away. Very frustrating. I'm not sure what triggers them especially, but it helps to wander around the companions to see if it will trigger something.

I've seen Josephine and Cullen's messengers quite often, but I've never once seen Leliana's.

Whenever I go to the rookery she's always either pacing back and forth, praying, or leaning on her table doing nothing. :S

Hers is the worst for dialogues. He's a blond Elf, and often he just walks away when I arrive. Very frustrating. Your best bet is to fast travel to her directly because I think the messenger triggers as soon as you enter the tower and by the time you reach the landing he's delivered the message and leaves.

Blast it!

her messenger is usually the same guy who tells her about Faria when you're in Haven. I think I saw a dwarf there once. I never hear any convo between them though. I only heard Josie's messengers talk which alternate between the Tranquil female and dwarf. or at least that's all I saw.

There's also that she essentially bullies Cullen into going, and the only reason she gives is that she doesn't want Josephine's feelings hurt. That means she probably doesn't think much of the 'interlude' either, but she goes anyway to humor her friend.

I like how she says 'merde!' when she finds out Josephine is 'deeply disappointed' (which is probably diplo speak for 'I'm heartbroken'). It's like she's saying 'What have I done? Noooooooo!'

I still say dinner would go down better than tea. Get that lot drunk! :D Oh, to see Cullen, Leliana, Josephine and Cassandra all drunk at the dinner table...

If you have the Inquisitor romance Josephine (as I did), Leliana plays the big sister role and warns the Inquisitor against breaking her heart.

Big sister who would literally cut your heart out in return. Heh..

She should keep doing that, hardened or not.

She gets kinda protective of Josephine in general. Like that argument they were having after Haven got attacked, where Cullen was ragging on Josie and Leli's all heeeeell naw.

Girl couldn't ask for a better (and scarier) big sis tbh. :S

She did it in my first playthrough, and I never hardened her. In fact Josie played a big part in that decision: I can't imagine she would react well if she found out her beloved Lavellan had deliberately hardened her BFF.

Anyway I doubt Leliana would actually kill her boss for that. As loyal as she is to Josie, she knows we are pretty important and the game would end right there if she did it  :P

That's because you're needed for the mark on your hand.

....for now.

Your Inquisitor better watch their food and drink closely when they're no longer needed, however...

After epilogue inq is pretty much one of most important figures in thedas so good luck for her.

Besides my warden could demolish her and she knew she isn't in his/her league and from what i saw inq judging by enemies isn't that far from warden.

Also if not her writers pet status that gives her power to completely ignore consequences she would pretty much face death sentence for threats toward the superior in military organization.

Your Inquisitor's prowess in a fight doesn't mean jack sh*te when they've just consumed a delicious cyanide muffin.

Then leliana would pretty much meet quick end for treason if mob wouldn't lynch her first.

Who would trace it back to her?

They'd probably be getting her to lead the investigation into it.

Even if your inquisitor doesn't like Leliana, it would be pretty stupid to upset her. Pissing off your spymaster is usually a quick way into an early grave.

Not rly my inquisitor would pretty much sentenced to death her after that threat (if not her mary sue status)

He will remove her for good after dai i don't need peoples that disobey orders and openly threaten me

Who would trace it back to her?

Pretty much she would have do that herself i doubt that inquisition peoples would go with that toward figure they pretty much almost fanatically follow.

Plus any intelligent inq would remove leliana from her position after her threats.

So in the end i have infinitely more power than she has 1 order and she pretty much is executed.

Ah, I just enjoy the ego deflation you can hear whenever someone suggests the protagonist gets outplayed. It's rather entertaining. :S

True, a little less in the way of "the PC is the godliest god ever" wouldn't go amiss in many of these games. I like competent NPCs -- and honestly, a supposedly powerful and special protagonist loses most of their luster when most everyone around them is uncaring, stupid, corrupt or incompetent. It's easy to stand out as an Olympic gold medalist among preschoolers, but it's embarassing to boast about it, too.

Awesome protagonists and awesome NPCs complement each other.

As i said hardly outplayed since practically outside her marry sue and writers pet status nothing protected her from execution in fact if that was real life and middle ages she wouldn't have any chance to get away with things she got away in dai pretty much because devs didn't allow on any sensible response on protagonist side pretty much same was with tallis where hawke could just kill her but instead stood there like an idiot and watched her walking away.

It is fun how you talk about invincible pc but ignore her status in dai.
