I knew it. I suspect Justinia is also responsible for Cassandra's rat tail ![]()

do...people not know that the braid is because of Justinia or...???
Wait, it is...?
Why...?
Oh crap. I'm being stupid, I guess, but I just can't think of a reason.

I don't know if there's an actual reason, I just remember Revered Mother Dorothea telling ponytail!Leliana "You would look good with braids, you know?" at the end of Leliana's Song.

look at Leliana's Song. if you have need enough, Anders will be within....wait no that's wrong. just...look on YT for the dlc. sorry Nyquil has me so loopy goodness. and this was taken last night!
I played the DLC a few times (heck, since I didn't get DA:O until Ultimate, and only wanted a short, evening-long story to play before I delved into the main campaign, Leliana's Song was the first thing I ever played from the universe) but I can't really remember anything about braids.
I'm completely lost here.

As mentioned it's in the opening dialogue tree with Dorothea when you(Leliana) escape the dungeon and enter the Chantry

I am of the opinion that Leliana is the most developed, well-rounded character in the series. This is all too clear to anyone who's played Origins all the way through Inquisition. In a way, she reminds me of Liara, who was also an exceptionally well developed character in her respective series.
I adore Leliana and agree with what you have to say about Leliana.
I think Liara's development doesn't make any sense by comparison. She hopscotches around all over the place.

Yeah, but mass effect has always been less well written than Dragon age, especially since it became more shootery.

I thought the original ME was a well written game. It was from ME2 that things started rolling down the southern stairs.

Probably because they actually appear to have planned Dragon Age out from the start...unlike Mass Effect, which ended as a complete jumbled mess when you step back and look at it. Have to agree with Eirene that Leliana's development is leagues above Liara's, which honestly seemed like they didn't really know what to do with her for a while. Like her Shadow Broker thing being completely ignored in ME3. Probably attributed to said lack of any real planning ahead.
And that's from someone who liked Liara.
Funny that DA isn't even a trilogy and it feels more coherent than the ME trilogy. :S

As for Mass Effect, I do feel with ME2 that the main story went downhill. But the character writing improved, in my opinion. For example, I thought Liara's writing in both LotSB and ME3 is a huge improvement over her dialogue in ME1. The old Liara was still there, but under other layers that had to be peeled away...I thought that was well done.

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks Liara never actually became a badass in any Mass Effect game, not ME2, not ME3. The only moment when I felt she was going toward the hardened badass route was in ME2 when she threatened to flay someone with her mind. Other than that I never felt she became badass in the Leliana-crush-a-mans'-neck-with-her-thighs kind of way.
Tali, Garrus, Legion, Miranda and Jack's development on the other hand, I love to bits.
And I agree with the above posters about how Liara's development seemed to go from soft -> hardened -> soft again during the trilogy. It didn't feel very coherent and thought out as Leliana's, whose development I feel the writers had planned out at least starting from Awakening/Leliana's Song DLC where there are subtle hints about her role in Inquisition.
And let's be honest, the only real complaints about Leliana's character development is not that it's bad or incoherent, but that she's all serious and dark and not her DAO self. I love how her story is concluded either way and never really felt Sheryl or any other writer didn't know what to do with her. I think they made her out to be a much more in-depth and complex character in this game and, honestly, I ship her with my Warden now more than ever. ![]()

I think fan feedback is responsible for that.
After the release of Mass Effect 2 a lot of Liara's fans were complaining about that 'flay you with my mind' line. I personally liked Liara's darker turn in ME2, but not all of her fans felt that way, and those who didn't were quite vocal. The were also some gripes about the darker side of Liara in LotSB as well. So I think Bioware responded to some of that feedback by having Liara backtrack in ME3 and say she wasn't being serious with the mind-flaying threat, and was just trying to scare him.
In short I think when writers start having character arcs influenced by fan demands (a.k.a. fan service) it usually works out to the detriment of that character.

I think that was the point. I don't think Liara necessarily changed much from ME1 to ME2/ME3...but the situation she finds herself in is different (just like Leliana when she became the left hand). Her "badass" personality is just a facade she has constructed out of necessity - in order to operate in Illium's underworld. The ME1 Liara was still there. It's just she's having to act like a person she's not. Of course she is alot more cynical in ME2 and ME3, but I think that was a logical way to take her character.

Like I've said in the past, though...good as Leliana's arc has been, I kind of hope her story is done, lest it become convoluted. Hardened, unhardened, Divine, not Divine, romanced, not romanced, she's come quite a ways no matter what and I feel like it's as good an end-point as any. Probably for the best. I'd hate to see it get dragged out.
Also hope they leave the Warden alone after the whole Calling cure thing is wrapped up so I can safely believe Warden/Leliana hell yeah adventures part two has actually begun, not to be interrupted again. Cause I need that. ![]()

As for the next game, I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if we'll hear some dialogue about what Divine Victoria is doing, but I don't think she'll play a major role (especially if the next game will be set somewhere in northern Thedas).

Yeah, we'll no doubt hear about what a Divine Leliana is doing (I have a hunch they named all three of them Victoria just so throw-away ambient dialogue will be easier to do, tbh.) but as for non-Divine Leliana...I hope that's it, sad as it is to say. I feel like that would be for the best.
I'd like Leliana to be in her happy place off-screen. She's earned that much.

As long as that storyline is actually wrapped up and we're not left with a giant question mark fluttering over our heads I can deal with not seeing either of them again.

Yeah, that's what I mean. The whole deal with the Warden's quest needs to be wrapped up, because it seems far too huge a thing to just leave to headcanon. Don't want to go and get my hopes up about my Warden returning and continuing her questing with Leliana only for it to get stomped on later when I find out she never returned or something.
