I don't find Leliana distant. She still talks about intimate things from very early on, she still places more importance on stray comments by the Inquisitor than anything the Warden might have said or did.

She's just... rather boring in DA:I

Alternate interpretation: she feels far less confident than she lets on and will grasp at anything that will stabilize a world that has spiraled out of control.

With the Warden she had Dorothea as back up support. Now Dorothea is gone and Leliana feels lost. Alone in a cold dark world.

She needs a hug. hug2.gif

My Inquisitor and Leliana never had girly chats about shoes and hair and stuff doe.

That's the important thing.

Of course it depends on the Inquisitor's personality. What I meant is, as a general rule, those are relatively easy to land friendships with compared to the rest of the team; it shows on them better than the others.

Dorian. Yup. Absolutely right. Completely forgot about him.

He outright tells you he'd like to be your friend.

Dorian bugged badly for me...he didn't tell me much :/

She never tells us about Schmooples either. We find out through a note she left lying around. She's fond of her birds too, but we can't discuss that with her either. (Baron Plucky, the holy terror!)

I think Leliana has a soft spot for animals in general or something, tbh.

There's that war table operation to deal with varghests around Griffon's Wing Keep, and Leliana's option is all 'this is our fault, we invaded their territory. Guide them to a new habitat and they should leave us alone.'

Lels is a hippie. Meanwhile Cullen is all 'Just kill the damn things.'

Hm, you mean in terms of let's call it extroverted demonstrativeness? That's a point, but again, it depends on what you're looking for. I found Cassandra's content quite obvious in terms of how close we had become, how she trusted me to see her vulnerable side and respected my opinion.

And I admit I forgot Dorian, too. He's not on the same level as Cass and Cole, but he's very much someone I want to hug and tell that even if his parents and homeland never want him again, his very distant cousin from the barbaric south will always call him family. His writing in moments where he's all open and honest and vulnerable is just so damn compelling and close-to-home.

Re: Leliana and animals, the Baron Plucky note made me laugh. I can totally see her being good with the birds. It could be a remnant of her softer side ... and while animals can't provide the closeness a human could, and die even more easily, they also won't betray her. Showing them a little affection is "safe" for her.

She gets her agents killed in the process too. We don't see any reaction from her about it, but I guess she would either feel horrible (soft) or frustrated (hard).

Mmh... Leli is fond even of dangerous animals... Can you imagine if she met Hagrid? Or Stitch?

Or Leliana in the Pokemon universe...

Edit: someone had the same thought.

Befriending Dorian did lead to some of the most touching dialogue in the game, IMO.

"I'm sure you must think less of me, now."

"I think you're very brave."

Dorian approves

"...brave?"

"It's not easy to break tradition, and walk your own path."

*smiles*

Dorian greatly approves

Aww.

Yeah, I really get the impression that he's rarely if ever had anyone in his life who would see and appreciate and embrace Dorian as Dorian, unblemished by politics or dynastic obligations or sexual shame or status-jockeying. Felix, possibly, and then nothing? Reminds me a bit of Cole, actually, who lost Rhys and Evangeline when they found out what he was, and who's obviously still hurt by that just as he struggles with being seen and feared by other people whom he only wants to help -- and who then, both as more-spirit and more-human, is so deeply touched and happy to finally have found someone who cares for him without reservation.

I'm not sure what the pink cat thing is as I've long lost track of the billions of Pokemon out there, but that one's totally Leliana. Just need a full party of something that looks like a nug and she'd be set. :S

I was actually pretty bummed we never got to see Rhys and Cole reunited.

Would have been great to see his reactions to the human path and the spirit path.

It's another evolution of Eevee: Sylveon. The link gives others she might use. Wigglytuff seems like a right pick.

Hehe I hadn't thought of that before but Sylveon is definitely a good choice for her.

As for friendships in DAI, Dorian's, Cole's and Cassandra's were definitely my favourites. Varric does seem more distant, harder. Can't blame him, really. Leliana does call you her friend in her softened Divine ending, though. I'll see if I can pull up a save for a quote in a bit; it's quite nice seeing her let someone in again.

I always liked Leliana in the ending scene. No matter what you did regarding her she seems so much cheerier, understandably.

And just like the coronation in DAO and Duke Prosper's party, she gave a warning to avoid a certain food plate. Heh.

Actually, didn't she say all the food was bad at the end of DAO? She said she couldn't find good food even in the royal castle. :D

Ah, yes, I forgot about that. Lels really doesn't like Fereldan food. :S

Ungh the feels remembering the final coronation scene doe.

"But does the heroine get her girl?"
*giggles* "Yes...yes, she most certainly does."

Screw it I need to play DAO.

My first Inquisitor bonded more with the advisors than with most companions, so I think a hug or a dozen wouldn't have felt inappropriate. :P

I'd say we get closer to Leliana than she would like in her current situation. Throughout the game she tries really hard to focus on her duties and keep people at arm's length, tricking them into thinking she's this cold-hearted spymaster who will shiv you if you look at her the wrong way; it works so well that even Josephine struggles to see behind that mask ("She's grown so much more distant than the outgoing woman I met in Val Royeaux. Leliana used to wander the Orlesian courts singing the sweetest songs, charming the greatest wits. Now she collects secrets and takes risks that would make empires crumble. I worry, but she will not hear it"). The Inquisitor, however, always seems to catch Leliana with her guard down (especially the first time) so she ends up telling them things she would normally keep to herself. I doubt other characters know that she suffered a crisis of faith after Justinia's death, or that she feels she failed her; hearing Varric say "yeah I would be a decent spymaster, but Leliana is much better because she doesn't care about her people" was extremely frustrating to me, but I guess he couldn't possibly know she feels responsible for the attack on Haven because she was worried for her scouts' safety and pulled them back right before Corypheus arrived. So basically the Inquisitor is one of the few people who know she does care (even though she tries to hide it for various reasons) and probably the only one she finds herself trusting with rather personal stuff. Is this a real friendship? Is it comparable to the one we can form with her in DAO? Probably not, but it's the next best thing considering how much Leliana has changed; even the Warden would have a hard time getting to know her if they met now for the first time.

Speaking of DAO (and apologies for this being a bit off-topic), I just noticed Andraste's military commander is voiced by Greg Ellis - Cullen, the Inquisitor's military commander. Found it interesting despite being a coincidence, since people keep comparing you to Andraste in DAI.

Anyway, softened Divine Leliana's line I referred to earlier:

"I have been many things - bard, sister, left hand - and always because someone needed something from me. I realise now I am all of these things, and yet, not defined by any one. I am now Divine Victoria, but to my friends - to you - I will always be just Leliana."

If you tell her you'll miss her, she says Val Royeaux isn't so far and she could always use the advice of the Herald of Andraste.

Aw, I like that. Probably never going to hear it in my own games because I still don't like making her Divine, but it's a nice final line for her all the same.

Soften-Leliana has good chances of becoming Divine in my current playthrough.

I was pretty satisfied with having Cass in my first run, so I'm still not sure which option I will like the best in the end.

Not sure how my main Warden would react to Leli becoming Divine though, I could see her making fun of her hat.

Mine would probably make a lot of corny 'You look divine' puns.

Then she'd get really, really sad.

LOL that was ... Ouch :P (well that actually made me laugh).

But d'aww, it's true the whole "Ive done enough" dialogue with Leliana with the Inquisitor makes me hesitate, she deserves some peace.

Yeah, being Divine just doesn't seem like something that'll be good for her personally. She needs to get away from it all and be happy, there's been more than enough suffering and burden in her life.

I also know my Warden would despise that arrangement; she was a sort of moody, introverted Dalish elf who already hated being the Hero of Ferelden, being the Divine's girlfriend would just deprive her of even more peace and quiet with Leliana. But only being able to be with her behind closed doors at risk of scandal for a while would break her heart, and then nobody leaving them alone when it goes public would drive her insane. :/

It also looks like she's supposed to call you friend in the end celebration as well if you complete her personal quest as shown here http://forum.bioware...314/?p=18385519

if E516F88206765C4CAD004B3358CD0139
"To you, my friend. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be standing here."
if 915CC2886A76FD4B92EF6518BA53010A
"And I... would still be lost. You gave me back my hope and my faith. And for that, I thank you."
else
"And I... would still be shackled by the past. You've given me new resolve. And for that, I thank you."
else
"To you, Inquisitor. For all you've done."

but some variables/flags are bugged :(. Hopefully it gets fixed.
