I agree; I think the fact that she tried so hard to change matters. I also think people only seem to see her as one or the other and that's why it's such a shift from DAO to DAI for some. No, she wasn't always entirely the "good Sister" but it's not like she was always "princess stabbity" either. She was always more complex than that. Which is why her saying she is not defined by any one thing she's been - bard, sister, left hand, spymaster - was one of my favourite scenes with her in Inquisition.

 

Agreed, that was probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire game. Felt like a really good wrap to Leliana's character arc.

 

 

And the Guardian didn't accuse Morrigan of manipulating the Warden because she didn't give him a chance

I've always headcanoned they're, like, the most unlikely friends ever. Like Leliana and the Warden's weird adopted children. 

 

With Barkspawn trying to get him to play around as a dog would, leaving the poor nug terrified and confused.

 So? She was still making the attempt, as she had been for years at that point. Who she was before distressed her greatly thinking back on it. If you keep her unhardened, she dedicates even further to doing better. Even if you harden her, she doesn't become moody and evil all the sudden, she still disapproves of excessive violent actions, is still rather bubbly and approachable, loves music, stories, all of it. That's part of who she was. Just like the more morally dubious parts a

She didn't say no because Justinia was like a mother to her. She loved her. She saved her life. She knew she the only one who could do what Justinia wanted, so she did it. It doesn't mean she wanted to do it. If anything, her dialogue makes it pretty clear she didn't want to get dragged back into it but sucked it up for Justinia's sake.

 

Anyone can be bubbly, tell stories, and be approachable if they are a good actor/bard. She was not the only one who could do it, there were others who could have done it..and the way she says it hints that is just another ways he tries to justify her actions.

 

Even if Justinia was like a mother to her, Leliana is not a child.. she doesn't have to listen to everything 'mother' says.

but yo...you need to understand the nature of the relationship. she doesn't have to be a kid or have the whimsy of a kid to have a mother figure in her life that she trusts and confides in...and certainly respects. not blindly though...she didn't Marjolaine her, if that makes sense. well probably not because those are two very different types of relationships.

i mean to say that...well sense i've had a mother figure as a grown woman, that i understand her perspective. there is great respect and love there...and there is nothing, within reason, that i wouldn't do for her...because she did the same for me. now...Leli's situation with Justinia is on a grander scale than my day to day as an assassin...excuse me, IT person. but i do get it. that bond doesn't disappate and loyalty is something Leli stands firmly on.

If Leliana was just acting, and everything about her was a lie rather than a heartfelt attempt to repent, do you really think the Warden wouldn't have caught on? That they would still be with her ten years later? Especially one who kept her unhardened? Seriously. All this speculation of duplicity is just cynicism and tinfoil hats at this point. the entire premise of Lelianas character development in DAO was her trying to figure out who she is, what she is. The side of her we saw most of in DA:O was part of her, one of the many parts of her. As it was said above, she's not Princess Stabitty. She's not innocent cloistered sister. She's a very, very complex character like that. Any perceived facade you're thinking of wouldn't be to fool the Warden at that point, it would be for her own sake. Maybe Leliana was lying to herself somewhat, but so does everybody.

There's a difference between 'doing everything mother says' and helping a woman you care for and respect deeply when she needs your help, even if you have to make sacrifices to do it.

People don't always at rationally regarding people who they think love them, or feel they owe. People stay in abusive relationships all the time, or return after leaving. It's not just a matter of saying no.

If she was in the fade the nightmare demon would probably tell her that she choosed wrong that she never loved the warden due to that loyalty

To continue on the subject of Leliana's mentality: she consistently shows a tendency to let her emotions affect her judgment when she is fond of someone.

 

She justified a lot of Marjolaine's behavior because she loved her.

She helped out Justinia because she felt she owed her.

If the Warden romances and cheats on her, the Warden can very easily lie to her about it.

In Inquisition, Cullen mentions she has a blind spot when it comes to Grey Wardens.

 

Get on her good side and she'll let you get away with a lot.

yes. I'm not sure what the official medical terminology is for such a thing but she has heavy...co-dependency issues. maybe even identity dependent issues or again whatever the term is officially called.

i think that is why I'm quick to get angry when the writing traumatizes her further...that dependency comes from trauma, imo.

Dependent personality disorder and dissociate personality disorder respectively are the terms for what you describe.

 

Leliana being put through the wringer is getting old. I hope she gets to retire and live peacefully now.

 

Edit: I'm sure there are other psychological conditions with those symptoms.

Her light/dark shifts point to a water sign (like the tides). So Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio. She's so not a Scorpio though.
