I don't think it was in bad taste. I think the inspiration was more The Bride/Beatrix from Kill Bill. That was the first thing that came to mind in promo material.

Doesn't the rape thing only happen if Tabris is female though?

In any case, that's not really what I meant. It's more to do with how organic the opening is and as a result how easy it becomes for you to connect with Tabris on a deeper level than usual. While most origin stories did pretty well in that department, I give bonus points to the CE version for its depiction. I think it does an especially great job setting the stage for what's to come, all the while making sure that you actually give a damn about the protagonist.

Shianni gets raped regardless.

I figured you might have been referring to her.

Just has a thought: Leliana is really good at handling her messenger birds and they are quite aggressive towards others (a note in the rookery shows this). Schmooples 2 is good at intimidating prisoners into talking (another note, on her desk.)

How come she's so good with animals, besides liking them? Well, it was possible to make her a Ranger in Origins, wasn't it?

Insane hypothesis: Leliana had a fascination with magic in Origins that was explored in converstion with Wynne. She starts with the basic poison-making skill (alchemy). She loves nugs. What if the war nug is a result of crazy experiments by her? (Leli the mad scientist... has a nice ring to it. Or maybe I just really want to see her in a lab coat.)

It's funny now that you mention it. Ranger wasn't really on my list of specializations for her.. I always liked Bard and Assassin for thematic reasons. But mostly just Bard. Assassin wasn't as useful on an archer. Ranger was probably a better bet.

Yeah, Bard and Assassin were the specialisations I usually use on Leliana. My Warden meanwhile was a Ranger-Duelist.

Well, now it's part of my headcanon because of the whole 'beastmaster' thing she has going on in DAI. Besides, she knows first hand how effective animal minions can be from her DLC (that blasted drake!). She's more subtle than most about it though. I wonder if Leliana and her crows are like Saruman and his crebain... That would be neat if they could actually talk to her.

Edit: I also like the 'civilized bard' and 'savage ranger' dichotomy. It suits her. She's at home in either a city or a forest or an old ruin.

In my playthrough Leli was a ranger.

They don't need Leli as a mad scientist, they have Dagna for that kind of things. I think Leliana and Dagna get along quite well so there you are:

- Do you think we can make it lovelier and deadlier, Dagna?

- Oooh! Can we try some lightning runes in the eyes? Pretty blue eyes and zap! Zap! Zap!

(Infectious giggle)

Yeah, it makes sense. If I play DAO again, I may do it too.

I should correct what I said about archers and Assassin. It was useful, but the main skill mark of death (or whatever it was called) was annoying. Since you had to get in melee range to use it.

Yeah, that's why I never took Assassin for Leliana and my Warden. We were both archer bard-rangers. Those song abilities plus two extra fighters (bears!). Add Alistair the Templar-Champion to knock people on their back and it was a pretty devastating combo. Wynne or Morrigan would handle healing duty. So many pink sparkles though...

Downloading the mod to remove those status effects was the best thing I've ever done in DAO, tbh.

PC version is worth it for that alone tbh. Used to have to turn off all of Leliana's bard skills. :S

What about getting rid of the annoying ice sparkles and fire/lightning effects on the weapons. My rogue's back is on fire! That has to hurt!  :crying:

So damn jelly of you PC people and your mods...

That too. Using a fire-enchanted weapon would always light up your character's face and make them look weird before mods.

Thank the Creators DAI had the bright idea to not have your weapons on fire when they're on your back, only lighting up when you unsheathe them...seems like a health hazard otherwise...

Wasn't that DA2's idea?

Plenty of other critters to kill for meat and leather, I daresay. Especially since halla are either sapient or close to it.

No nomadic or transhumant group practices husbandry purely for the sake of keeping draft animals. It's simply not efficient enough; these peoples are on the margins of survival, and they need to eke as much benefit as they can out of the only animals that are regularly available to them. They have limited resources, and using them on herd animals that can only pull their carts is stupid. Sami use reindeer for skin, fur, meat, milk, and their horns, in addition to being draft animals. Tibetans use yaks for an even wider variety of purposes, including the employment of yak dung as fuel. Mongols have had horse meat and horse milk in their diet for millennia, and badawiyun have used camel in a similar way. The list goes on. All these groups hunt in addition to maintaining their herd animals, of course, but it's supplementary, and has to be.

The Dalish are, incontestably, an unrealistic nomadic group for this and a variety of other reasons. But that doesn't really matter. The writers are operating off of fantasy tropes with them, not anthropology or history. Most people, even the fairly literate fans, don't know what plausible nomadism even looks like. Investing the effort and resources into research, into making the Dalish a plausible society, would probably have been wasted. And arguably, the Dalish exist precisely because those historical plausibility angles are ignored; without them, many of the features that make the Dalish "Dalish" would not be possible.

Eh. Using rape as a plot device for the protagonist who is not raped is pretty skeevy, and I can't blame Dragon Age for not repeating it.

I agree. That it was used sparingly, however, makes it more powerful...at least to me.

Hmm, probably better than getting your socks wet. Everything looks so damp in the Fade now.

Well, that's surprisingly optimistic.

To me, it looks... slimy, unpleasant to touch...

I chose Ranger for Leliana in DA:O She could summon 4 types of animals...the first one is wolf. I loved the wolf...one time there were 2 helping us.

Talking about that whole Nightmare sequence, I'm still curious what Leliana would see in there by now, if she came along. I imagine it'd be quite a bit different than the nightmare in DAO.

The encounter with Spirit!Justinia would have been incredibly hard for her.

I can only imagine. Just hearing about it hit her hard.

Maybe the Nightmare would throw a twisted Warden and Marjolaine at her just to add insult to injury.
