Masked Empire, Iron Bull and the Chargers, Cole in DAI, Here Lies the Abyss (the warden plotline)

Have to admit, been more of a fan of Weekes' Mass Effect stuff than his Dragon Age work. The Adamant arc really pissed me off, Masked Empire was decent, and Solas was kinda frustrating. Still, congrats to him on the promotion.

I just worry for the depiction of the Dalish now that Weekes is in charge.

I get the distinct impression he really wants to **** on 'em as much as he can nowadays.

What's funny is that my favorite character of his is one he didn't create (Jack), and before ME2's launch, got in trouble for saying he loathed her.

I love Jack.. but yet, don't know how to give him credit for it. He shared the writing with brian Kendragan, and then didn't even seem to like the job after Brian left. As for his other stuff, most of it pushes the wrong buttons for me. Spirit coexistence, AI coexistence, Iron Bull.. It's all too alien for me.

No nomadic or transhumant group practices husbandry purely for the sake of keeping draft animals. It's simply not efficient enough; these peoples are on the margins of survival, and they need to eke as much benefit as they can out of the only animals that are regularly available to them. They have limited resources, and using them on herd animals that can only pull their carts is stupid. Sami use reindeer for skin, fur, meat, milk, and their horns, in addition to being draft animals. Tibetans use yaks for an even wider variety of purposes, including the employment of yak dung as fuel. Mongols have had horse meat and horse milk in their diet for millennia, and badawiyun have used camel in a similar way. The list goes on. All these groups hunt in addition to maintaining their herd animals, of course, but it's supplementary, and has to be.

The Dalish are, incontestably, an unrealistic nomadic group for this and a variety of other reasons. But that doesn't really matter. The writers are operating off of fantasy tropes with them, not anthropology or history. Most people, even the fairly literate fans, don't know what plausible nomadism even looks like. Investing the effort and resources into research, into making the Dalish a plausible society, would probably have been wasted. And arguably, the Dalish exist precisely because those historical plausibility angles are ignored; without them, many of the features that make the Dalish "Dalish" would not be possible.

How many resources would the halla expend from the clan? They seem to be fully capable of efficiently feeding themselves.

Pretty happy with the news of transition to Weekes as lead writer.

Generally liked his work in Mass Effect and was disappointed when my favourite character Miranda was passed on to someone new in ME3.

Thought his work on Dragon Age has been pretty decent so far too.

I had this same thought when I read the news.

I feel kinda 'meh' about this all.

I like most of what was done with the Dalish and ancient elves in DAI.  Not the Inquisitor's clan missions or the abandoning surplus mages, but the rest of it.

I wished my Dalish inquisitor could talk to Leliana about the various revelations and events in DAI.  Or anyone really, but in the absence of a fellow Dalish I felt she needed someone religious but not liable to dismiss Dalish beliefs to talk things through with.

According to this tweet, Dave is now working on the studio's new IP, the same project Casey Hudson was leading before he left last year.

Suspected as much. They needed someone who knows how to build new worlds.

Is it that mutliplayer IP they announced awhile back? Can't remember the name.

No, Shadow Realms got cancelled.  This project is shrouded in mystery.

That was Shadow Realms. It was in development at BioWare's Texas studio (SWTOR) but has since been canceled.

The new IP is being developed by the main Edmonton studio. We literally don't know anything about it other than the fact that it exists.

Ah OK. I wasn't too excited about Shadow Realms myself.. just not into multiplayer. Nice to know it's something else.. and probably another single player game.

Yup, they are still under the same roof and probably have lunch together everyday. But it remains to be seen how much of an effect this will entail.

The Dalish remind me of the Sami, at least as far as their lifestyle goes. The Sami are nomadic reindeer herders.

How much you want to bet this will affect depictions of the Divines?

Not at all.

Because that was most likely always going to be the extent of its impact. Not at all.

Can I ask what everyone's favorite origin to romance Leli is, and why?

Late to the question.

F Cousland with Leliana

Think the Cousland story seems to weave itself so well into the DA:O storyline (and killing Howe at the end is very gratifying with that origin).

And I like the idea of two damaged women who've lost so much through betrayal coming together, healing and falling in love.

Weekes is my favorite Bioware writer, all the characters he wrote for Mass Effect are in my top favorites and even though I wasn't that hyped about Solas, Cole or Iron Bull before release I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed if I gave them a chance. And I wasn't.

So, yeah, I'm quite happy about this change in leadership though I wonder why Sheryl or Mary didn't take up the mantle since they've been there since the beginning, especially Sheryl given she was sort of a 2nd in command to Gaider for DA2 and Inquisition, before Patrick also joined. Still it will feel weird without Gaider.

Hey, at least Leliana's writer is still here, both Gaider and especially Weekes seem to like her a lot (given they've both seem to have gotten their hands on her character while writing the novels), so I'm overly positive about this change, though I wonder if this means Cassandra, Dorian, Morrigan and Alistair's storylines have come to a closure, cause it really seems that is the case.

Excluding Dorian, I feel the other three characters appearing in more than a cameo role in future games would seem like a drag on for the characters.

I think we've probably seen the last of Leliana as a character in the series, though no doubt we'll probably still hear some mention of her in text or other character's dialogue, particularly if she is Divine. Since it is probably unlikely that she'll be a returning character I think any writer changeups are equally unlikely to have an impact on her character.

I really hope this is the case, once DAI and its DLC cycle are said and done. The transition to northern Thedas feels like it should mark the endpoint for most of these characters.

Few things would rustle my jimmies more than non-Divine Leliana showing up in Tevinter for no real reason, with my Warden once again nowhere in sight, after all that heartwarming dialogue about rejoining her for good. Bleh.

At this point I'd only be down with another Leliana cameo if it's linked to a Warden cameo. Provided they don't get a bit of closure in a DAI DLC, which I still believe they should.

I've actually considered this before; in some sense, making Leliana Divine is a surefire way of reducing any chances of her appearing in future installments. Her non-companion role in Inquisition is still relatively limited compared to others; you were just able to see her at any time because you two happened to share the same living space. With a potential Divine status, it pretty much closes the deal on whether she will ever appear in a significant role again.

That said, as someone who never wanted anyone else to replace Justinia, I'm okay with that. In the greater scheme of things, it fits with my own 'ideal' vision of a post-Justinia era. Honestly, I'm only really curious about what it all means for a Leli-romanced Warden.

Considering her writers pet status and pretty much that bioware have no limits when it comes to ridiculousness just to bring old character (at least da crew) into new game i won't be suprised if we will see her again.

After all there was zero reasons to bring her back after dao same pretty much same for cullen who jumped around world 3 times just to meet new protagonist. There is only few character that had reason to show up further in series.
