I always do those quests in the same order: Circle, Orzammar and Brecilian Forest. The fact that we get companions from the first two is a big deciding factor in that.

Pretty much the same for me. Redcliffe and Sacred Ashes always come dead last, because with the Dalish Origin the Tamlen encounter is much more impactful when it happens before you see him in the Gauntlet, and that's the only way to do it. Otherwise he says you won't see him again...only to see him soon after. It's kind of weird.

The Sacred Ashes quest feels best as the home stretch of the game anyway, IMO.

No matter, I've already acquired what I need.

I think the dramatic arc works best if the Templar Order, the remnant of the former Inquisition whose corruption has become steadily more obvious over the years, finally just joins Corypheus and is crushed by the new Inquisition. The one downside here is that this also works best if the Seekers go permanently extinct as well, but I don't know if I'm comfortable telling Cassandra that she shouldn't try to rebuild them.

Barris... eh, I don't have much regard for him. He's just another competent soldier in a game with plenty.

Not to mention that the new dlc kind of continues to show that the Templars were merely taking the easy way and how the Inquisition became corrupted from what it was meant to be. I consider Leliana freeing the mages and the Templars succumbing to their own corruption to be fitting ends. Leliana tries to make the Chantry what it was supposed to be. Ameridan being whitewashed is just another reason to support Leliana.

Didn't think you could get the Tamlen encounter before the Ashes considering literally every time I've played, the ambush at camp always occurs after I do the Sacred Ashes quest regardless of when I do it.

It does if you do the Sacred Ashes last. The Tamlen encounter happens after you've recruited every army IIRC.

I believe the "Shrieks attack the camp" encounter occurs after you've recruited four out of five of the main story quests. That's when the Archdemon realizes you might actually be a threat and sends a hit squad after you.

I don't know... I've played the Dalish origin before, and I think that the Gauntlet encounter with Tamlen works better if you see it before meeting Tamlen himself again. It both undermines the power of the Gauntlet itself, which I approve of because it's largely bullshit, and adds a nicely dramatic twist of the knife for him to show up again when you thought you'd already obtained closure.

Something like that. It seems kinda random at times, I've actually had it happen while travelling between the Brecillian Forest and the Dalish camp before I was even done with that quest.

Meh.

I prefer it for RPing my Warden if that final encounter in the gauntlet is when she can well and truly move on.

Makes it feel much more complete when Ariane asks you about it in Witch Hunt, and Mahariel can finally accept that the past is the past and she can't change it.

Oh, does Mahariel know the Dalish woman in Witch Hunt? I do love how BioWare do these little things for each story. It's sad to think what happens to the other Origin characters when you pick one... :(

That doesn't necessarily undermine the Gauntlet, the Tamlen there comes from within the Warden's memories, and he's arguably right about not meeting him again since the Tamlen you meet later isn't really the version the Warden remembers.

No different clan from what I remember but at the point of witch hunt Mahariel is fairly famous amongst the Dalish so her story so largely known.

Not personally, but they're much more familiar with each other all the same. She seems to have had some contact with Mahariel's clan after they left, to boot.

It's stated that Velanna and Mahariel knew each other somewhat from a clan gathering pre-DAO, though.

I love how the Mahariel origin has an impact on all the heavily story-driven DLCs in Origins, as well as Dragon Age 2.

It may not have been involved in the main story as much as let's say, the Cousland and Tabris origins, but I'm glad the devs found some way to make up for the lack of content.  :)

Yeah it's a fair trade off. :) It's really cool how they tie these things together. I hadn't a clue that Merrill was actually in Origins for years!! :o

The change in appearance, and a different voice actress certainly do a lot.

I mean, Merrill is a lot different in both games.

I've heard that, yeah. I love DA2 Merrill, even if she's very silly sometimes. Her little Welsh accent is adorable! :D

Gah. "The Fade: Lost in Dreams" probably has the least replayability appeal of any quest, ever. Though Spirit Form is kinda cool. I like the hilarious way it just glides along. Still though. AND I forgot Morrigan!

She goes through a personality change as well.

Honestly I'm not sure why Merrill was Merrill. The character goes through so many changes in being carried over into DA2, that she is basically a different character. They probably should have given 'Merrill' from DA2 a new name, and just had her be a unique character.

Isabela goes through a change in appearance and voice actress as well, but at least the way the character was written stayed consistent. She has the same personality in DA2 as she did in the Pearl cameo in DA:O.

I don't recognize the existence of DAO's Merrill. That's some imposter claiming to be Merrill.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before in the thread, but its too bad that Hawke and Leliana aren't seen talking with one another while Hawke is at skyhold especially if the Assassin dlc and Prince dlc is completed

I chalk up Merrill's drastically different personality to the fact that Mahariel is her life long friend that she's known since she was a toddler, while Hawke and co are basically (extremely overplayed at times, mind you.) 'WOAH HUMANS WHAT IS THIS.'

Merrill is a bit more forward in interactions with her clan than she is with everyone else even in DA2, for instance.

Also, it seems her attitude might have been the result of awkward romantic tensions with Mahariel in DA:O, as I've said earlier.

I'm glad they chose to carry her over rather than just make someone new. The Mahariel/Sabrae clan scenes were some of my favourite bits of DA2, made the world feel so much cooler to have little things like that slipped in.

Yes! And especially as she knew the family from Lothering and Bethany was so fond of her. Leli even mentions that in Inquisition. Actually Hawke's surprised reaction to Leliana in Exiled Prince was silly in that case. Ah well, little writer oversights happen.

Just had a strange bug in Origins I've never encountered before. I saved Leliana from her nightmare, but twice in a row when I clicked on her after fighting the demon, it just looped back to the first cut scene with her praying - except the Revered Mother wasn't there on screen, so it was just a disembodied voice! After second time when I ran through the dialogue it jumped straight to "Holy Maker!" scene. Weird.

I remembered one thing I like about this part: Stone Golem Boxing!! :D

lol that's happened to me a few times before. Sometimes the revered mother is still there in the cutscene, but actually as the demon she turned into, which makes it very amusing when Leliana's all "whaa no this is totes the revered mother wut u smokin stranger I don't know??' :S

Made me laugh!! :) I must try this quest later in the romance sometime, based on what you said earlier. #Feels I'm really trying to pace myself and savour Leliana interaction this time. Snort - she's actually got the least approval right now! Morrigan leads the pack, followed by... Sten. I've started cheating a bit with them, because I never use Sten and Morrigan disapproves of almost everything my Paragon inclined Warden does. So I've started talking Morrigan's ear off at Lothering and giving all the right dialogue options. Same with Sten at camp.

Yeah, I've gotten into the flow of pacing out Leliana's romance throughout a playthrough by now as well.

I've done pretty much all of the main quests and screwed around with sidequests quite a bit right now and I still haven't gotten to the tent scene. I usually have them enter the initial stages of a relationship after Orzammar, because I imagine a week or two cramped down in the Deep Roads sent tensions aflutter...it's usually quite a while before they get to know each other in other ways, however. Like, shortly before the second-to-last main quest I do, which is usually Redcliffe. I'm getting there. :S
