Funny thing about Leliana, I always thought she had a 'submissive' personality. She seems to change based on who she is connected to. When she was with Marjolaine, she was scheming and fairly ruthless. With the chantry, she became self-effacing and gentle. Then the Warden came along, and she got stuck between the two extremes, having to kill (and enjoying it), while trying to remain a force of good. I think that's what led to her internal conflict in origins. She did not know which one to pick and needed someone else to help find her place. Then she became an agent of the Divine and found a middle ground, but with the death of Justinia, I think she is kind of adrift again.
This is a woman who invests all of her being into the people she is close to: Marjolaine, The Maker, the Warden (even as just a friend) and then the Divine, but now she has lost them all. I can understand her being 'darker' this time around. Everyone she has ever loved has been taken from her. Poor woman.
