Mmm when I saw that comic I though it was some kind of flashback scene, where Leliana thinks about the circunstances that led her to meet her "Warden" lover. The guy in the suit would be some kind of secrent agent that offers her a mission. She says "I'm no longer in that line of work." which makes me think she doesn't want to work as an assassin or do evil things, but when she reads the dossier she finds the mission acceptable.

If I'm right the conversation is in secret agents language. That's why Leliana says she doesn't know who she is talking to, but she seems to have a good idea of it, as the suit guy explains with that 'Of course you do, my little sparrow.' Maybe the suit guy tries to behave like a James Bond figure. 'A pleasure as allways', 'my little sparrow', 'darling',...  He's trying to sound seductive. I don't really know if he's sleazy as you think, but I don't think he's a nice person. He seems a very shady figure.

Another thing: when she says 'I'm no longer in that line of work' he replies 'nothing like that'. So it's not an assassination maybe?

Good ol' spiritual mission. Maybe it's the classic 'grizzled, traumatized former assassin looking for repentance after drowning their sorrows' thing. Hence her smoking habit, and generally tired appearance. With creepy dude sending her to someone who might be able to help her find it. Hmm...

Alternatively, he thinks she needs to get laid. *runs away*

Good thing her romance was not handled with the 'sexual healing' trope in mind. Ugh.

Indeed. There's always been a healing aspect to the Leliana romance, I'd say, but it wasn't done in that way thankfully. Warden is helping her in large part just by being there, tbh.

I'd say healing is an aspect of Leliana's character in general and not just in her romance. Either as a friend or lover we can help her realize that love doesn't have a price tag and that you don't have to do someone else's bidding so they'll like or love you (Marjolaine).

Then Justinia came along and screwed that up. She used Leliana just as badly as Marjolaine, if not worse. Justinia knew Leliana was damaged, knew she had trouble finding her footing on her own, knew she hungered for approval and used that to make her become her personal assassin. Even if she had the noblest of intentions, she used a physically, mentally and emotionally scarred woman to further her own ends. What Leliana wanted took a backseat to what Justinia wanted.

Sure we can say Leliana is old enough to make her own choices, but the fact is she is not psychologically healthy. She's unstable, vulnerable and easily manipulated when she gets emotionally involved. Justinia knew all that and took advantage of it. She may have been remorseful (after she died), but taking advantage of someone when they are in a fragile state is what a villain does. A well intentioned extremist at best.

That's why I don't like hardened Leliana in DAI. She completely buries who she is and what she wants for the sake of 'the greater good'. That girl has been standing too close to the fire for way to long and she needs to get away from there ASAP.

Justinia...Justinia is one very conflicting character for me. I think you about sum up my thoughts. Not sure if I hate her, but I know my Warden likely wouldn't forgive her in retrospect.

Very much agreed. That's why I like my (hopeful) ending of Leliana going off to be with the one person who remains a steady figure in her life, that she can put her faith and heart into and not have it misused, manipulated and broken, and just leave it all behind. She deserves that much.

Some people feel Divine Leliana is the ideal ending for her character arc, but meh. In my opinion, I see this as much better.

Yes! The Warden can sell all the loot she found during her quest for a cure (because the Warden is a magpie. Fact), buy a nice little house in Antiva with a view of the sea and retire there with Leliana. They can go on adventures if they get bored. Antiva has port towns all over the place with easy access to the Free Marches, Ferelden, Rivain, Orlais... The possibilities are endless!

Maybe the suit guy is an agent of CIA, MI6 (Leliana knows his name and his initials are JB), the French Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure or, even more related to Leliana's themes, an agent for a secretive Vatican counter-espionage agency (in that Bruce Willis movie, Hudson Hawk, they had one). Maybe the mission is about a world threat: the "Darkspawn", whatever they are in that AU, and is about helping the "Wardens" against them. I should stop before losing myself completely thinking about Leliana in a James Bond like AU...

She seems wasted but elegantly wasted. She has style and she seems frenchy. I like that for a Leli AU.

*Snip a great analysis of Justinia's sins.*

Great sum up, I agree. What were you thinking at, Justinia? You don't put an ex-alcoholic to work in a brewery!

I do agree, but maybe a non romanced Leliana needs something relevant to do with her life, so staying with the Inquisition or being the Divine could be great for her. As head of the Chantry or as a high level member of the Inquisition she can continue doing the good fight.

We think very much alike, you and I. :3

Warm summer home in Antiva. Josephine can show them the area when she's in town. Get up to all kinds of trouble like the old days. Bring the nugs and Barkspawn Jr around. Take up adventuring and explore every corner they can reach. Aww yiss.

Warden's definitely going to have to sell a lot of her loot though, because Thedas went through the inflation of the century while she was gone. Used to be able to buy a shining set of silverite armour with that 100 sovereign coin purse, now that will barely get you a paperback copy of Hard in Hightown. :P

There's another good interpretation. Don't see anyone, uh, behind her in the last panel though...

We don't know where she is or if she's already in a full relationship with the Warden. How about she get's up after all she thought about, walks to the next room in the Hotel Campsite, knocks the door and we see the siluette of a mysterious figure who opens. Then Leliana says:

"Sorry, but I couldn't sleep. I have something to tell you."

I hate my hyperactive imagination.

Was it Justinia who was remorseful? Or was it just that spirit who was imitating her?

Admittedly, one thing I wish is that there was a way for Leliana to actually reject Justinia and repudiate her former role.

That's awesome.

Also, just moving around the forums because I'm... bored I guess.

So, Leliana's nice.   ^_^ Or... bad depending on how you look at it...   :P

Welcome Poodle! Come join us, we have devastatingly beautiful redheads. <3 ;)

Justinia was always aware of what she was doing. She arranged for that letter to be sent to Leliana posthumously, so Leliana would go to Valence and find the message. It makes my feelings on Justinia that much more complicated. Sigh. :(

I'm neither a fan of mods nor modern AUs, so I shall contribute nothing to those conversations.  Everyone have a good weekend? I spent most of it in Thedas, except for when I accidentally drank a lot of beer with my housemates Saturday night. Once they went out, I went back to Thedas.  :D

Funny that we should love the same woman too...

And I know what you mean about the inflation. This game needs a lot of headcanon to keep it going.

For me that little stunt cemented my dislike (not hate, dislike) of her. She was too much of a coward to face Leliana and admit she had done wrong by her. Oh no. Instead she made it so that Leliana would be released after she had no further need of her.

So Justinia felt remorse for her actions, but she could never face them. She apologizes in death, but even then it's through someone else. She doesn't have to see Leliana's distraught expression when she hears those words.

Justinia has a fair bit of tragedy to her in that she knew that Leliana idolized her and could not bring herself to shatter the illusion because she didn't want to hurt her nightingale. The problem is that by maintaining the facade she twisted Leliana's mind. So she backed herself into a corner: either keep twisting and poisonning Leliana's mind or break her heart.

Justinia is an interesting character, but man do I want to slap her silly. LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO MY BABY!!!!

You mean the locked doors under Haven's Chantry? If you ask Sera she can open them for you.

That never worked for me. I can't click the doors so the option won't trigger. idk if I have a mod that messes it or what.

Oh I don't like Justinia very much, neither does my Warden. A blazing row was had just before she left on her quest, in my headcanon. Something along the lines of she needed a cure for the Calling to ensure she's around for Leliana to fix Justinia's mess. "You're just like Marjolaine" may have been snarled before she stormed out. The fact her intentions may have been noble ("greater good" changing the Chantry, etc) and the fact she did love Leliana makes it worse. :(

Your point earlier about the healing aspect to befriending/romancing Leliana was very accurate. I always saw it as pretty much that. The Warden is pretty much the only person in her life (except her mother I guess) who loves her unconditionally and never asks anything of her.

Interesting tidbits if we compare Marjolaine to Dorothea/Justinia. Both are Orlesians who 'rescued' Leliana (we presume Marjolaine took Leliana in after Cecile's death) and then used her as a tool to get what they want. Marjolaine exploited Leliana's affection while Justinia exploited her gratitude.

Leliana comes to them under very similar circumstances. Which makes her meeting with the Warden all the more interesting: Leliana 'rescues' the Warden. She is active instead of passive in this instance. Kinda like Tabris in her Origin. She doesn't wait to be rescued, she does the job herself.

And that's why Leliana/Tabris is my OTP.

Justinia was a coward, but I have some conflicted feelings about her, some dislike mixed with some sympathies. She helped Leliana way back when she was Mother Dorothea, she also won the respect and admiration of people like Cassandra and, being a coward or not, she seems to felt remorse about what she did to Leliana. Marjolaine showed no remorse and tried to kill Leliana. I can understand that facing Leliana and telling she did wrong to her was a very hard thing to do, because Justinia is clearly some sort of mother-figure for Leliana and I'd say Leliana was like a daughter to her. Anyway I think Justinia should have taken the decision to help Leliana with the Left Hand moral burden, one way or another, and making it posthumous is a very bad idea, borderly evil idea. Let's thing Coryfish hadn't decided to kill the Divine, how much more moral burden over Leliana's shoulders before Justinia would release her?

I'm not very familiar with the Origins, bar my own (Cousland).  Not sure what you mean by "rescues" - you mean the Tavern? Not sure would I count it as "rescue", as the three amigos and Dog would have made a paste out of Loghain's men all by themselves. ;) She certainly helps though, to be sure.

For me it was a bit of both. The Warden saved Leliana emotionally by helping repair her shattered heart and building her trust. On the flipside, Leliana helped her let go of her anger and pain over the tragedy she endured. When she finally captured Howe she was in a rage and wanted him to really suffer, but Leliana begged her not to torture him, just kill him. It would have been wrong, even if the little **** deserved it. They were both perfect for each other. *dreamy sigh*

Mine was quite ok. On weekends I usually play some DAMP to participate in the weekend event, but this one I just played some SP for a couple of hours on Saturday. I couldn't wait the DLC to get a discount, so I bought it (I'm weak). Enjoying it so far, beautiful zone, nice side quests, nice lore and the banter seems much more active in the new zone. Accidental beer? It sounds nice :) I had one or two cups of sweet wine, some chat and some laughs with some of my friends on Friday evening. Quite an ok weekend overall.

@Fadeless Yeah, I meant the tavern. That's why I said 'rescue' in quotation marks. :D Or if you play other than a rogue, she rescues us for traps and locked doors and chests (barring a few hiccups illustrated earlier).

Leliana can rescue the Warden from jail. She and Morrigan did it in my playthrough. The prison break in DAO is my favourite quest in any rpg ever.
